targeted tax increases, spending cuts… “We have to do both”, says Bank of France governor

Home

Since the appointment of Michel Barnier’s new government, “political debate has raged, […] we tend to get angry, arguing about one of the solutions, which is a certain tax increase,” he added. According to François Villeroy de Galhau, “we have to pose the question in a simpler way: when a family lives beyond its means and cannot make ends meet, and this is the case in France, we can either reduce our expenses or increase our income.”

“Fairness”

“The common sense is that we have to do both at the moment, we need a proportional combination of both measures. It is not up to the Bank of France to decide, it is up to the democratic debate with the government and Parliament. I believe that the right proportion is mainly spending savings for about three quarters, and undoubtedly a recourse to certain targeted and fair tax increases for another quarter,” he estimated.

On September 17, François Villeroy de Galhau suggested “an extraordinary and sensible effort towards certain big companies and big taxpayers” to reduce the deficit. On Wednesday, the central bank governor also suggested “looking at what works among our neighbors,” because “we will soon be the only European country that cannot get its debt below 3%” and “we are no more stupid than our European neighbors.”

Home

– Employers who dismiss whistleblowers before the provisions providing protection for such people come into force may also run into trouble. The fact that employment law is not regulated by the Whistleblower Act will not protect them from this, says Joanna Torbé-Jacko, a lawyer at the law firm Joanna Torbé & Partners.

aircraft manufacturer puts weight on terms of its offer to end strike

Home

Time limit is too short

“We have reached out to the union to give them more time and offer logistical support once they decide to move forward with the vote,” he added. No new deadline has been set. The American planemaker on Monday presented its “best” offer, also described as “final,” including notably a 30% wage increase over four years, versus 25% in the previous proposal, and set a deadline of 11:59 p.m. Friday for the best offer to be ratified by strikers.

But hours later, the union leader dismissed the new proposals as insufficient – the first proposal had been rejected by almost 95% of union members on September 12. He also said the Friday evening deadline was too short to hold consultations with strikers.

New discussion

The 30% increase “is progress, but it does not erase the fact that for a decade, our members have only received an 8% pay increase,” the union stressed in its press release. It also stated that the results of a survey conducted the day before among its members were “very clear” and that they were “not interested in the latest proposals from the company sent through the media.”
