Paris 2024 Olympics: the Olympic rings were removed from the Eiffel Tower last night

Home

the important one
The Olympic rings hanging from the Eiffel Tower since June were removed on the night of September 26-27. They will be replaced by lighter structures.

On the night of Thursday to Friday, the Olympic rings installed on the Eiffel Tower since June 7 were removed. The 30-ton ring, which dominates the Iron Lady, will be replaced with a lighter structure that can withstand winter weather conditions, but no firm date has been announced for its return. They must be installed until 2028.

The project defended by Anne Hidalgo has drawn strong reactions, especially from Gustave-Eiffel’s descendants. The latter spoke out in September, denouncing “substantial modifications both in the visual aspect but also in the symbolic aspect of the Eiffel Tower”. They regret the visual impact of this temporary installation on the symbolic monument.

Meanwhile, a smaller ring has been temporarily installed on the Jena Bridge, opposite the tower, to preserve the Olympic spirit.

Acts of violence at NRW clinics increased by 34 percent

Home

Düsseldorf (dpa/lnw) – The number of acts of violence in hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia has increased by more than 34 percent since 2017. This emerged from the Interior Ministry’s response to a request by the SPD parliamentary group. A very strong increase of 22 percent occurred in 2022. In 2023 there was an increase of almost nine percent, and crimes totaled 1,705 cases. That means four to five days.

“These are truly shocking figures and need to wake everyone up. Health workers must be better protected,” said SPD MP Lisa Kapteinat. Most recently, attacks on hospital staff in Essen caused widespread outrage. A young doctor is seriously injured by people who have been convicted before and are associated with the clan’s crimes.

The figures refer to so-called crimes of brutality. This includes acts of violence such as physical abuse, robbery and civil liberties.

Massive disruption to the Munich S-Bahn after the signal box was damaged

Home

Munich – A damaged signal box at Munich’s Ostbahnhof paralyzed most S-Bahn traffic on the main line through the city center on Friday morning.

Practically all lines are affected, as can be seen from the disruption report from Deutsche Bahn. It said: “Please expect long delays and train cancellations.” In some cases, trains are diverted around the city center, such as the S8 to the airport.

The duration of the disruption remains unclear

It was initially unclear when the damage would be repaired. If this takes longer, further problems may arise, as the S-Bahn also plays an important role in getting to Oktoberfest.

Russian drones killed three people and injured 11 in the south of the country

Home

“Russia launched drone strikes in the south of our region,” wrote Oleg Kiper, governor of the Odessa region. Two elderly women and a man in his 70s were killed, he added. Eleven other people were injured, including a child, he said.

This area, which is located on the Danube river, neighbors Romania. Even though it is very far from the front lines, it is sometimes targeted by Russian troops because of its port infrastructure, which is vital for the transit of goods. A fire broke out as a result of the attack, but was extinguished by firefighters, said Oleg Kiper. The governor released images showing a building engulfed in flames, partially destroyed and its windows broken.

Japan has a new prime minister. He is a former defense minister

Home

Ishiba can certainly be nominated as prime minister because his party controls the lower house of the Japanese parliament.

In the race for the position of leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, Ishiba won against Sanae Takachi, the minister of economic security, who has the opportunity to become the first woman to lead a Japanese government. Ishiba and Takachi faced off in the second round of voting as none of the nine party leadership candidates obtained the required majority in the first round of voting.
