REVIEW: Storm by Brigid Kemmerer
Dear Ms. Kemmerer:
Sarah Wendell told me about your book when it was chosen for the Smart Bitches Sizzlin’ Book Club. I admit some trepidation because I am not a huge fan of YA and the YA I do read is ordinarily straight contemporary. Storm is book 1 in the Elemental series. I felt like the series was reminiscent of the world building in Avatar, the Last Air Bender. There are individuals who are born on points of a pentagram and each point represents an Element such as Air, Water, Earth or Fir...
Ownership in the Digital Age, Part 1

Image via Big Stock Photo
In federal district court in the Second Circuit, New York’s Southern District, Capital Records is suing ReDigi Inc. ReDigi’s business is the resale of legitimately purchased digital music. Capital Records argues that a digital file resale creates a secondary, unauthorized copy that violates intellectual property rights of the rights owner. ReDigi argues correctly that Capital Records essentially seeks to abrogate the right of First Sale doctrine.
The Right of First Sal...

For Nina Askew, turning forty means freedom—from the ex-husband, freedom from their stuffy suburban home, freedom to focus on what she wants for a change. And what she wants is something her ex always vetoed—a puppy. A bouncy, adorable puppy.
Instead she gets…Fred.
Overweight, middle-aged, a bit smelly and obviously depressed, Fred is light-years from perky. But he does manage to put Nina in the path of Alex Moore, her gorgeous, younger...
REVIEW: How to Mend a Broken Heart by Amy Andrews
Dear Ms. Andrews:
Sunita is usually our go to reviewer for medical romances but I saw this on NetGalley and wanted to give the book a whirl. This is a quick but emotional read. The two main protagonists are a previously divorced couple whose marriage disintegrated after the death of their son. They reconnect ten years later when Fletcher, the husband, comes to his ex wife, Tessa, with a request. His mother is suffering late stage Alzheimer’s and needs in home care. Tessa is a nurse and Fletche...

A wave of powerful supernatural energy washed over Charouth as she navigated the depths of an abandoned subway tunnel. Decades ago the E train sped along these tracks ferrying passengers during rush hour. Now it all l...

REVIEW: A Dangerous Liaison with Detective Lewis by Jillian Stone
Dear Ms. Stone:
I had high hopes for this book. It is set in the late Victorian era and features a yard man as the hero and an industrialist’s daughter as the heroine. Everything about the premise and story is fresh and different. Unfortunately this is more of an action flick than a mystery with the book relying heavily on large scale action scenes to move the story along. All the external physicality of the book lost me and I had a hard time keeping track of which body was falling to the next...
REVIEW: The Way to a Duke’s Heart by Caroline Linden
Dear Ms. Linden,
I’ve read all three books in your The Truth about the Duketrilogy and never much cared about what happened to said peer, the (unchallenged) Duke of Durham. The guy seems like a heel. On his deathbed–and estranged from his eldest son, Charlie, the hero of The Way to a Duke’s Heart–he confesses he (the dying dad) is a possible bigamist. Prior to tying the knot with his Duchess, the long dead mother of his three sons, he’d married and pretty much lost first interest in and then c...
Friday Film Review: The Valet (La doublure)
[image error]Le Doublure (The Valet) (2006)
Genre: RomCom
Grade: B
I’ve enjoyed lots of Francis Veber’s movies (and laughed at the nod to “Le dîner de cons” that’s mentioned here) but this one has romance as well as comedy. It’s a charming French farce that is very approachable. The actors are enjoyable, the action keeps moving and it’s truly funny. It’s also, despite being filled with some immoral people, a very moral little tale.
Rich CEO bastard Levasseur (Daniel Auteuil) has had a mistress for two years....
Friday News: Amazon acquires Dorchester books; BN announces its UK partners; Amazon files patent for dual screens
Amazon Publishing Acquires 1,000 Publication Contracts from Dorchester Publishing – Back in June, Amazon bid for the Dorchester publishing contracts and today closed the deal. According to DBW, authors “were offered the opportunity to join Amazon Publishing and receive the full back royalties that Dorchester indicated were owed.” I think that’s a pretty fair offer.
Going forward, the acquired Dorchester titles will be published under the appropriate Amazon Publishing imprints: Science Fiction...
