REVIEW: Archangel’s Storm by Nalini Singh

Dear Ms. Singh,

I’ll be honest, this is a book I’ve been waiting for since your Guild Hunters series began and we first met the Archangel Raphael’s spymaster, Jason. So I started Archangel’s Storm with a sense of great anticipation. What I found was a quieter than expected romance, but one that I found great satisfaction in reading.

REVIEW: Just One Night by Nancy Warren

Dear Ms. Warren:

In flipping through the Blaze ARCs sent to us by Harlequin, I picked up your book first. I’ve read and enjoyed you in the past. For 2/3 of the story, I felt like this was a book I could recommend to Dear Author readers but it kind of fell apart at the end; however, aside from the odd suspense element introduced which served as the relationship ex machina, this was a charming love story.

The perils of paid-for reviews

From I Can Haz Cheeseburger

Despite the regularity and ubiquity with which free speech is invoked in online discussions, it is rarely relevant in the way it is used, as either sword or shield. In the broadest possible sense, our online discussions (at least in the United States) are reflective of the “marketplace of ideas” theory of free speech, but for the most part, we’re not specifically implicating First Amendment protections when we’re making asses of ourselves expressing ourselves online...

Welcome back to work, Americans.

Say Hello to Samsung’s Fanboy Factory – The Mobilers Program – I know that the tech blogosphere (along with a few others) have a lot of money attempting to influence them. There are many complaints that Tech Crunch fails to adhere to a journalistic standard (or an FTC standard) about failure of disclosure and conflicts of interest. Samsung has a program called Mobiler which is essentially a tech oriented street team where individuals are leveraged to give cover...

REVIEW: Catherine, Called Birdy by Karen Cushman

Dear Ms. Cushman,

The title of this book rang a bell when I saw it for sale. Since it has such a positive reputation and was a Newbery Honor book, I felt confident that it would be worth my time to seek out and try. I immediately fell for Catherine, called Birdy. But I also acknowledge that if a young woman who might act and think like Birdy actually existed in England in the year 1290, she would have been one in a million.

Birdy’s diary faithfully records a year of her life beginning when she...

REVIEW: Riveted by Meljean Brook

Dear Ms. Brook:

“For two people who don’t fit anywhere, we get along well” sums up the romance between two outsiders, David and Annika. This unusual romance between a the volcanic naturalist David and the airship engineer Annika might be my favorite entry in your Iron Seas series. It is one of my favorite books of 2012. My review may be TL;DR for many (Too Long;Didn’t Read) so I’ll provide a short summary. Two outsiders meet, fall in love, overcome impossible conflicts, and confess their love...

Breaking Night: A Memoir of Forgiveness, Survival, and My Journey from Homeless to Harvard Breaking Night by Liz Murray. $1.99.

From Jacket Copy:

In the vein of The Glass Castle, Breaking Night is the stunning memoir of a young woman who at age fifteen was living on the streets, and who eventually made it into Harvard.

Liz Murray was born to loving but drug-addicted parents in the Bronx. In school she was taunted for her dirty clothing and lice-infested hair, eventually skipping so many classes that she was put into a girls’ home. At age fifteen, Liz found herself on the streets when...
