REVIEW: His Very Own Girl by Carrie Lofty

Dear Ms. Lofty,

I put off writing this review. Had I written it right after finishingHis Very Own Girl, I’d have nattered on and about theimportanceofabandoningpartisan politics andworkingtogetherfor a greater good. But, once I calmed down and stopped bawling–His Very Own Girlis a surpassingly affecting novel–I realized I don’t have to beseech anyone to do anything other than read your book. Its leads are Lulu, a pilot for the English Air Transport Auxiliary, and Joe, a medic in the American In...

Guest Post: Brave New World (What I’ve Learned About Cover Designs for Digital Publishing

The following is a guest post by author Sherry Thomas who self published an anthology with Courtney Milan and Carolyn Jewel. She offered up an unusual story about cover art in the digital age.

The book cover as a marketing tool interests me. Whenever there is a good blog post or a talk, I stop and pay attention.

But most of the available opinion, advice, and debate I’ve come across are centered around physical publishing, when a cover is meant to fetch you from across the store and get you to...

Thanks to our sharp eyed commenter, Rosie, we led the scoop on HarperCollins’ abandonment of agency pricing yesterday. From there, Laura Hazard Owens, worked her contacts and got a confirmation from Amazon that it was indeed going crazy with the discounting of HarperCollins books. Followed close on the heels of this was a Books on Board email that said “BooksOnBoard welcomes back Discounts for Harper Collins eBook titles! This week only! 24% Off all HarperCollins eBoo...

REVIEW: As You Wish by Elyssa Patrick

Dear Ms. Patrick:

You and I have always been friendly on Twitter, and I knew that you were an aspiring author, so when you offered me an opportunity to read your self-published book, As You Wish, I jumped at the chance. The book is a series length book, that has a charming locale, entertaining characters and a sweet, satisfying romance.

REVIEW: Taming the Tycoon by Amy Andrews

Dear Ms. Andrews:

I grabbed this book on NetGalley given that I enjoyed How to Mend a Broken Heart quite a bit. An environmental protestor handcuffs herself to a property developer. Worse, they are fluffy pink handcuffs.

[image error]The scatty tree hugger with the uptight has never been my kind of story but I think what really bothered me was the obvious melodramatic overtones of the store. For instance, the heroine is shocked to find out that the hero’s eyes are blue:

” She’d figured they’d be black, like...

Monday News: Nook Tablet rumors; Kindle Serials; 50 Shades irony; Kindle Fires are with ads

New Rumors Suggest New Nook Tablet Coming This Month – Nate pulls together a number of rumors regarding the upcoming Nook tablet. Purportedly it will run Windows 8 instead of a forked Android system which would make sense given the Microsoft partnership. The screen resolution is to be sharper and the processor zippier. The real problem as of yet is the lack of content. Amazon has videos, music and books. Ditto with Apple and Google. For any tablet to succeed, it will need to provide easy acce...

REVIEW: Wrong Bed, Right Guy by Katee Robert

Dear Ms. Robert:

The setup is corny but amusing. Elle Walserdecides to creep into her boss’ bed and seduce him and instead ends up with his brother, Gabe Schultz.

[image error]Crawling into her boss’ bedroom and trying seduce him even though he has ignored every overture takes some brass ovaries. And I liked it that she was both appalled at the guy’s behavior when she discovers it is the wrong guy instead of falling on top of him again. After all, what kind of guy does decide to have sex with a completely r...

Ownership in a Digital Society, Part 2

Image via Big Stock Photo

Introduction

About a day after I posted part one of this two part series, news broke that Bruce Willis was planning to sue Apple over the right to bequeath his extensive iTunes library to his daughters. The news turned out to be a hoax but for a short while it shined a light on a problem consumers in this age of digital media face. Is digital media always a rental or are you truly acquiring an ownership interest something when you press the “buy” button?

Charles Hughes...
