Kindle program

Hey, all, reminder that you can read most Undertow titles for free if you have Kindle Unlimited, and that if you buy a print copy from Amazon you can get the Kindle version for 99 cents.

Also, it’d be pretty cool (and beneficial to me), if you bought our first two releases this year, or took out a subscription to our 2017 releases.

Mike O’Driscoll’s latest collection, “The Dream Operator,” is now shipping. As is Shadows and Tall Trees Vol. 7. They are, I think, both worth your time.

Call for Submissions – YBWF5

Call for Submissions 2017 – Year’s Best Weird Fiction, Vol. 5.

Each volume of the Year’s Best Weird Fiction will feature a different Guest Editor. Laird Barron guest-edited Vol. 1, and Kathe Koja was guest editor for Vol. 2. Simon Strantzas guest-edited Vol. 3, Helen Marshall guest-edited Vol. 4, and Robert Shearman is guest-editing Vol. 5.

This is a reprint fiction anthology, to be published in 2018. Series Editor Michael Kelly, and Guest Editor Robert Shearman are seeking material first published this year only, 2017. To be clear, only weird fiction published in 2017 is eligible for inclusion in Year’s Best Weird Fiction, Vol. 5.

This is for 2017 material only!

Please send electronic or digital copies only, please! PDFs are preferred, but will also accept text files (Word), Mobi, or ePub. Publishers and editors only are encouraged to send their books, journals, magazines to:

bestweirdfiction@gmail.com

Deadline for all material is December 15, 2017, no exceptions, but sooner (much sooner) is better. Late submissions may not receive proper consideration, especially if we receive a majority of the material at deadline.

Writers: Please do not send unsolicited material. Urge your publisher or editor to send in any relevant work. Feel free to query with any questions or recommendations.

Please note: Only writers whose work is selected for the volume will be contacted.

I am afraid we are not considering any self-published work.

Thank you!

Guest Editor announced for Year’s best Weird Fiction Vol. 5

Robert Shearman to Edit Volume 5 of ‘Year’s Best Weird Fiction’

Press release

Toronto, Canada, May 2017 — Robert Shearman, a wildly inventive writer of strange fiction, will guest-edit volume 5 of the Year’s Best Weird Fiction for Undertow Publications. Shearman’s work has been nominated for several awards, and has been reprinted in numerous “Year’s Best” anthologies.

“I was truly honoured when Mike asked me to edit a volume of this terrific series,” Shearman said. “Undertow Publications is doing incredibly important and relevant work, revitalizing the field of weird fiction.”

“I’m delighted that Rob has graciously agreed to edit volume 5 in the series,” Kelly said. “He’s one of our greatest writers; an intelligent and perceptive reader and critic with a unique sensibility.”

Robert Shearman has written five short story collections, and between them they have won the World Fantasy Award, the Shirley Jackson Award, the Edge Hill Readers Prize, and three British Fantasy Awards. His plays for the theatre have won the Sunday Times Playwriting Award, the World Drama Trust Award, and the Guinness Award for Ingenuity in association with the Royal National Theatre. He is a regular writer for BBC Radio, and his own interactive drama series The Chain Gang has won two Sony Awards. But he is probably best known for his work on Doctor Who, bringing back the Daleks for the BAFTA winning first series in an episode nominated for a Hugo.

Established in 2009 by writer Michael Kelly to champion short fiction, Undertow Publications (UP) is home to the acclaimed anthology series Shadows & Tall Trees, as well as the Year’s Best Weird Fiction, and numerous single-author collections. As editor, Kelly has been a finalist for the World Fantasy, Shirley Jackson, and British Fantasy Society Awards. His fiction has appeared in a number of venues.

Year’s Best Weird Fiction, Vol. 5 is now open to submissions. For submission guidelines, please query at

“Michael Kelly’s Shadows and Tall Trees is a smart, soulful, illuminating investigation of the many forms and tactics available to those writers involved in one of our moment’s most interesting and necessary projects, that of opening up horror literature to every sort of formal interrogation. It is a beautiful and courageous series.”
