Cover reveal – Sing Your Sadness Deep

As promised, here is the glorious cover for “Sing Your Sadness Deep,” by Laura Mauro. The art is by Stephen Mackey. Design by Vince Haig.

Laura Mauro’s work is an enigmatic mix of Shirley Jackson, Vernon Lee, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. This is a superior debut collection. Quietly (and sometimes not so quietly) devastating and emotional.

2019 subscription offer

Dear Friends,

Happy holidays and season’s greetings!

Some fantastic news to share — we will once again be offering a subscription for our 2019 original titles! There is a change to our hardcover offerings. All hardcovers will now have the same cover art as the trade paperbacks.  Pricing remains the same as our 2018 subscription. Yay!! The 3-book trade paperback subscription is  $60 (U.S), and includes worldwide shipping. The 3-book hardcover subscription is $90 (U.S.), including  worldwide shipping. That is a $15 saving per subscription off the regular price. These are the 3 titles offered in the 2019 subscription:

“This House of Wounds,” by Georgina Bruce

“Sing Your Sadness Deep,” by Laura Mauro

“All the Things We Never See,” by Michael Kelly

Early in the new year we will be starting our subscription drive. We hope you are as excited about these upcoming collections as we are. (At least those first two.)

Our two limited edition “contemporary classics” reprints — “The Moon Will Look Strange,” by Lynda E. Rucker, and “The Lost District,” by Joel Lane — will be sold separately.

The reserves on our limited edition reprints are filling fast, so please let me know if you want me to hold a copy. I am not taking any funds yet. I am only taking expressions of interest. In the new year I will be in touch about pricing.

For those who haven’t yet picked up “Nothing is Everything,” by Simon Strantzas, you can still save $5 on the book by using Coupon Code nie5 upon checkout of the Undertow shop. Simon believes this is his best work yet, and we agree. It’s truly a masterpiece.  I love all the stories, but was particularly taken with ‘Our Town’s Talent,’ ‘In This Twilight,’ ‘The Terrific Mr. Toucan,’ and ‘Ghost Dogs.’ Let us know which are your favourites.

“Welcome to Nothing is Everything, the latest collection by Simon Strantzas. Taking the paths less traveled to the human heart and mind, and excavating the strangeness that abides therein, Strantzas is one of the most striking writers working today.”

-Angela Slatter, author of the World Fantasy Award-winning The Bitterwood Bible and Other Recountings

Nothing is Everything – Hardcover

That’s all the news for now. We will reveal another gorgeous cover next newsletter, this time for Laura Mauro’s collection “Sing Your Sadness Deep.”

Wishing you all a happy, healthy holiday season. Good will and good fortune to all.

Kindest Regards,

-Michael (and the Undertow team)

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your continued support. We appreciate your business. We enjoy bringing you quality books from some the best and brightest authors. If you’ve liked one of our offerings, please do let us know. And, if possible, leave a rating and/or review. Every little bit helps us to keep going.

2019 will be an important year for us. We’ll continue to showcase powerful new voices, and we will be launching our “contemporary classics” line. Here’s what we’ll be bringing you:

“This House of Wounds,” by Georgina Bruce (all formats)

“The Moon Will Look Strange,” by Lynda E. Rucker, our first “classic” reprint. Deluxe hardcover, numbered, and limited to 100 copies.

“Sing Your Sadness Deep,” by Laura Mauro (all formats)

“The Lost District,” by Joel Lane, our second “classic” reprint. Deluxe hardcover, numbered, and limited to 100 copies.

NOTE – Many of the limited hardcovers have already been provisionally reserved. If you are interested in them, please do let me know asap. I’m not collecting any funds yet, but will add you to the reserved list.

There may be one more book added to this list. See note at the bottom of this e-mail for details.

During the “holiday” season, whether you celebrate or not, (and indeed throughout the year), we hope you find peace, love, and enjoyment with friends and family, food and film and books and art and music.

Wishing you all much love and happiness.

My printer and fulfillment centers continue to be back-logged. And Canada Post is still on strike, leading to a storm of shipping problems. Orders are now taking 4 weeks, even expedited. I am sorry. Please note that if you did place an order, it will eventually arrive. Thank you for your patience.

Reminder that through Black Friday weekend, we are offering 20% off almost everything in the store. Exceptions are the current discounted bundle and subscription offers. Everything else is on sale.

Upon checkout, use coupon code: bf20. The code expires November 28.

Amazon currently has the Kindle editions of our 2018 releases for just $2.99.

The winner of our “Shirley Jackson Special” draw was Dave Roberts! Dave wins a copy of our deluxe hardcover “The Silent Garden.”

“The Silent Garden” is an incredible endeavour. We hope you’ll pick up a copy if you haven’t already done so. Use coupon code bf20 to get 20% off now.

Cheers!

Proposed collection

Hey, all, a question. But first some context.

In 2007 my first collection, “Scratching the Surface,” appeared from a small press in Wales, which promptly folded. In 2009 my second collection, “Undertow and Other Laments,” appeared from Dark Regions Press. My third collection was provisionally accepted for publication in 2015, but was dropped when the press changed ownership. I made little attempt to place it elsewhere. Mostly I have been busy on the publishing side of things. So, I’m toying with the idea of releasing the collection myself. It would contain previously uncollected material, plus 3 new stories.

Would anyone be interested in such a thing?

It would collect the following:

‘Some Other You’ originally appeared in Shadows Edge, ed. Simon Strantzas, Gray Friar Press, 2013.

‘The Wounded Bird’ originally appeared in Murmurations, ed. Nicholas Royle, Two Ravens Press, 2011.

‘The Face That Looks Back’ at You originally appeared in Supernatural Tales #18, ed. David Longhorn, 2010.

‘A Crack in the Ceiling of the World’ originally appeared in Postscripts 24/25: The New and Perfect Man, ed. Peter Crowther & Nick Gevers, 2011.

‘A Guttering of Flickers’ originally appeared in Dark Horizons, ed. Peter Coleborn, Summer 2011.

‘A Quiet Axe’ originally appeared in Nightscript #1, Oct. 2015

‘All the Things We Never See’ originally appeared in the very limited 26-copy edition of ‘Undertow & Other Laments, ed. Joe Morey, Dark Regions Press, 2010.

‘Dead Man’s Chest’ (NEW).

‘Pieces of Blackness’ originally appeared in The Grimscribe’s Puppets, ed. Joe Pulver Sr., 2013.

‘These White Sorrows’ (NEW)

‘The Woods’ originally appeared in Tesseracts 13, ed. Nancy Kilpatrick & David Morrell, 2009. Reprinted in Best New Horror #21.

‘Hark at the Wind’ originally appeared in Space & Time #113, ed. Gerard Houarner, 2011.

‘Turn the Page’ originally appeared in Black Static #33, ed. Andy Cox, 2013.

‘The White-Face at Dawn’ originally appeared in A Season in Carcosa, ed. Joseph S. Pulver Sr., 2012.

‘This Red Night’ originally appeared in Weird Fiction Review #4, January 2014, ed. S.T. Joshi.

‘Bait’ originally appeared in Jamais Vu #1, January 2104.

‘Absolution’ originally appeared in Postscripts to Darkness #4, Summer 2013.

‘Other Summers’ (with Ray Cluley) originally appeared online at readshortfiction.com, Summer 2013.

‘Blink’ originally appeared in Tesseracts 16, ed. Mark Leslie Lefebvre, 2012.

‘Conversations With the Dead’ originally appeared in Postscripts 26/27: Unfit for Eden, ed. Peter Crowther & Nick Gevers, 2011.

‘The Beach’ originally appeared in The Mammoth Book of Psycho-Mania! ed. Stephen Jones-Editor, 2013.

‘October Dreams’ originally appeared in Supernatural Tales #22, ed. David Longhorn, 2012. Reprinted in Best New Horror #24.

Chrysalis (NEW)

‘Desert of Sharp Sorrows’ (with Jonathan William Hodges) originally appeared in Reflections Edge, 2007.

‘3000 Grey Balloons in a Bright Blue Sky’ originally appeared in Hint Fiction, 2010.

So, if there is interest, what should I call the collection. I can’t choose from the following:

The Face That Looks Back at You

These White Sorrows

Conversations With the Dead

Pieces of Blackness

Some Other You

All the Things We Never See

Cheers!
