Magical 9-Patch Quilt Blocks
There’s more to a 9-patch block than meets the eye! Many creative quilt or craft projects start with 9-patch blocks. Nancy shows you how to change-up the strip sizes, fabrics, or block layout to expand your quilting options. Change-Up Patchwork is the name of this Sewing With Nancy three-part TV series. Watch online to see all the details.
The basic 9-patch quilt block can easily be made with two fabrics and two different fabric stratas—sew strips together, subcut into sections, then sew into a block. Watch the process online at your convenience and find all the instructions in my book, Change-Up Patchwork. After learning the basics, let your creativity flow!
Vintage 9-Patch
The first variation is a vintage-look table quilt. In the 1800s, quilters painstakingly cut small fabric squares from fabric scraps, then hand-pieced 9-patch designs. We’ll show you how to achieve this vintage look with ease, incorporating clever strip cutting techniques.
Create the first strata unit: dark—light—dark fabric strips. Notice that partial lengths of crosswise strips are “kissed” together on each side of the middle strips. That’s the magic! Watch online or read the book to learn the math (for the strip lengths) that allows this process to work.
Stitch a second strata unit: light—dark—light fabric strips. Again, use partial strip lengths.
Subcut the stratas into sections. The specific strip size that we recommend makes for almost no waste of fabric while giving the vintage, scrappy effect.
Stitch the sections together; presto! The finished quilt was created by alternating the 9-patch blocks with cream-colored fabric squares of the same size.
Camouflaged 9-Patch
At first glance, you might think this quilt design is a combination of several different blocks designs—perhaps a 4-patch paired with squares and rectangles. As you’ll soon learn, it’s a 9-patch—a camouflaged 9-patch block. The large 12″ finished block sizes are a speedy way to create a baby’s tummy-time quilt.
Nancy shows how to create two strata configurations. The strip sizes are the same in each strata with the fabric colors reversed.

We find it fascinating how two fabrics can be used to create asymmetrical 9-patch blocks.
7-Patch Weave
There aren’t too many hard-fast rules when it comes to patchwork, which is why Nancy chose to break with tradition. Case in point: Must the 9-patch block always have nine pieces? That may seem like a ridiculous question, yet take away part of the block and substitute a strip of fabric—presto a 7-patch block. With a clever layout the blocks intertwine, which gives the illusion of them being woven together. We call it the 7-Patch Weave.
You’ll notice that these blocks have some of the components of a 9-patch. The middle section—a strip of fabric—creates an easy-to-piece block with unique design possibilities.
With a layout that alternates blocks and directions of the blocks, a woven design appears. Watch Nancy lay out the blocks online, during the third episode of Change -Up Patchwork.
Book Features Nine Great Quilts

Traditional Quilt Blocks Gone Modern
If you sew, chances are that fabric scraps abound in your sewing area. Don’t worry about storing scraps; sew them! Use Nancy’s Change-Up Patchwork techniques to create quilt projects with contemporary designs. Watch the second episode of Change-up Patchwork online to see all the details!
Scrappy Square Quilt
This scrappy square design was made from leftover fabric. Team Nancy auditioned what was stored away. Then, we turned coordinating fabrics into an ideal kids’ quilt. Learn how to stitch the square within a square design, using simple strip piecing techniques. Watch online to see how it’s done!
Assemble square within a square blocks with large centers. Cut 4-1/2″ crosswise strips for the centers and 1/1-2″ crosswise strips for the sides. The blocks are 6-1/2″.
Then, create again as many 6-1/2″ squares with small centers. All strips are cut 2-1/2″ wide for this easy block.
The layout is simple—alternate the blocks!
Scattered Squares
Now it’s time for artistic expression. The Scattered Squares Table Runner features four different block configurations that are mixed and matched to create a conversation piece. Watch online or read in the book how to design your own square within a square block with the use of “old school” graph paper.
Four different scattered-square blocks were used in this table runner:
Square within a square with a large center
Square within a square with a small center
Square within a square with a medium, offset center
Square within a square with a small, offset center
Deciding on the arrangement took the most time!
Flip Flopped Rectangles Quilt
Designing quilt blocks is as much fun as sewing them—Nancy called this design, Flip Flopped Rectangles. Replace a square with a rectangle to create a modern look. The skill set is the same, but the strip sizes have changed.
All the blocks featured in this blog and on the Sewing With Nancy TV episode are strip pieced. Square or rectangular blocks are all pieced using the same techniques. Half the blocks have a vertical contrast…
the other half of the blocks have a horizontal contrast.
To keep with the modern look, we chose not to add a border. The quilt is finished with a traditional binding. Do you like it?
Book Features Nine Great QuiltsFind these easy 4-patch quilts, and six additional quilts, in the new Change-Up Patchwork Book and DVD or in the Change-Up Patchwork Starter Set.

Easy, Contemporary Rope Sewing Projects
Sewing yards and yards of cotton rope or clothesline cording together to create baskets, trivets, or bags is not a new technique. Nancy’s guest for this next series creates multifunctional baskets, bags, and coasters for the modern home. She learned to sew at a young age, started a business during high school, and continues to create all the projects for her business while studying Environmental Sciences at the University of Cincinnati. Welcome Lindsey Zinno, who will inspire us with her reinvented rope sewing projects. Watch the first in this two-part series Rope Sewing Reinvented on Sewing With Nancy.
Find everything you’ll need to complete these projects in this Rope Sewing Reinvented Starter Kit from Nancy’s Notions.
The Coaster Basics
The coasters show Lindsey’s simple, yet functional style, using uncovered cotton rope—it’s the first project we’ll show you how to make. Use uncovered natural clothesline rope to create a more contemporary design with a traditional technique. Colored thread gives a stylish look. Learn what supplies and techniques Lindsey uses on today’s new episode of Sewing With Nancy.
Mini DishesThe next step to rope sewing is making vessels, this mini dish can be used for keys, jewelry, garlic, potpourri, or even to tidy up your desk. Use mini dishes for lavender buds and bobbins. Lindsey shares how she creates the mini dish with decorative details on Rope Sewing Reinvented.
Oval Tray
Once you’ve mastered the art of shaping a rope vessel, learn to experiment with the design. Lindsey’s Oval Tray is purposeful, while having a modern, artistic style. The angle of stitching determines the vessel shape and the inclusion of rope handles increases the functionality. Watch Nancy and Lindsey create this design on Sewing With Nancy.

New Design Potential for Basic 4-Patch Block
Start with the basics, then make a few simple modifications, to change what was traditional into modern! A 4-patch block—a simple, yet elegant patchwork design—has such potential! Presto, you’re a quilt designer, creating one-of-a-kind designs. Welcome to Sewing With Nancy’s first episode of the three-part series, Change-Up Patchwork.
A 3-color 4-patch serves as the basis for this blog and corresponding TV show.
Can-Do 4-Patch Quilt
Begin your change-up patchwork journey with a traditional 4-patch. Mix up the line-up using three different sizes of 4-patches for 4″, 8″, and 16″ finished quilt blocks. The various sizes of 4-patch blocks are cleverly combined with solid blocks to create a modern small-to-large block theme. It’s a can-do quilt!
Learn how to create rows of 4-patch blocks and squares. The different sizes of the 4-patch blocks nest together!
Lay out the quilt rows and watch the Can-Do 4-Patch Quilt take shape. (We laid out the rows on our studio floor. Can you spot some of our “spike” marks that we use for lighting?)
Spinning 4-Patch
The beauty of this quilt is its simplicity! Tweak the sizes of the 4-patch strips and the patchwork design to give the illusion of movement when four blocks are combined. Use bold, bright batik fabrics or your fabric print/solid combination. Remember, you’re the quilt designer.
The TV show and book detail how to change the sizes of the strips. Featured is a 4-patch design, an uneven 4-patch. The block by itself doesn’t look like much . . .
but arrange four of the same blocks together—presto, a Spinning 4-Patch!
High-Low 4-PatchA block that is usually symmetrical takes on a totally different feel when what was balanced becomes uneven. Don’t change the sewing steps, only the strip sizes. Can you see the strata sections? Watch the show online and you’ll get all the details!
It’s an ideal block for a table runner.

How to Sew Cornhole Bags – Free Sewing Tutorial
One of America’s family’s favorite outdoor games goes by quite a few names; cornhole, tailgate, bean bag toss, doghouse, Baggo, or, just plain bags. What would the game be without festive, colorful bags? Today, learn how to sew your own cornhole bags (or bean bags) and let the games begin!

How to Sew Bean Bags for Cornhole or Bean Bag Toss
Using the following instructions, you’ll be able to create regulation-size bags as set by the American Cornhole Organization. If you’re going to play the game, you better be official!
Supplies, Notions, and Fabric
12 oz. duck canvas, 1/4 yard each of two colors
Quality feed corn, 15 oz. for each corn bag (or use 15 oz. dried beans)
Zipper foot
Optional: 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge
Optional: Clover Point 2 Point Turner
Optional: Wonder Clips
[image error] If you opt to use novelty print cotton fabrics for your bean bags, perhaps to align with your favorite sports teams, be sure to underline the cotton squares with duck canvas for durability.
CreateFor each bag, rotary cut two squares of fabric 7″ x 7″.
Use the 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge to measure a 1/2″ hem on one edge of each square.
Press hem toward inside of square, prior to stitching edges.

Match right sides and use a 1/2″ seam allowance to stitch one edge of the square.
Stitch seams twice, or choose a double-stitch decorative stitch for durability (we used Baby Lock 1-05).

“Wrap” the corners: Fold the fabric along the stitch line at the bottom corner; pin.
Stitch the bottom seam starting at the fold, using a 1/2″ seam allowance.
Fold the bottom seam along the stitch line and sew the remaining edge, using a 1/2″ seam allowance.

[image error] In the following pressing steps, it’s helpful to press the bean bag envelope around a 2 x 4 Mighty Mini Board.
Press seam allowances open at the top edge.
Remove a small rectangle within the seam allowance to reduce bulk.
Refold the 1/2″ pressed seam allowance.
Press again.
Turn the bag right side out.
Use the Point 2 Point Turner to push out the corners.
Press.

Fill with 15 oz. of corn.
Pin the pressed folded edges, placing pins parallel to the fold.
Optional: Use a hand sewing needle to sew a long basting stitch along the top edge, to hold the corn in place when you move to the sewing machine.
Attach a Zipper Foot to your sewing machine.
Carefully sew the opening; removing pins as you stitch.
Optional: Use Wonder Clips at this step for ease of pinning.
Use an anchor cloth (starter piece of fabric) to stitch the final seam. Reverse stitch on the fabric to secure the seam. Then, clip away the anchor cloth.
What a great project combining sewing and backyard fun!

Fold the excess fabric to the underside of the canvas frame. Fold miters at corners; staple.
Make sure to slightly stretch the fabric evenly. Take time to check the front design to make sure the fabric is not distorted.Enjoy!

The randomly selected winner of the New! Hipster Apron Pattern from Mary Mulari on the June 23 post is Donn M DeWitt.
Her comment is: I would make one for each of the advisors in my CTA advisor’s group—59 members and growing. They would love, love, love this APRON, and of course one for my daughters and one for myself. Love this pattern and would fit everyone.
Thank You Mary for this great pattern.
Happy Sewing,
