Back to School Big-Bigger Canvas Tote
For kids going off to college or college grads moving to start a career, serge a Big-Bigger Canvas Tote that expands to handle storage and laundry needs. It’s a tote that has both function and style!
Supplies:1 yard each of two coordinating canvas or denim-weight fabrics
Madeira Mouline, 100% Cotton, Six-Strand Floss or other decorative thread/floss, four packages each of two coordinating colors
Madeira Aerolock Premium Serger Thread
Pellon® Peltex® One-Sided Fusible Ultra Firm Stabilizer , 11″ x 13″ rectangle
1 package Clover 1-1/4″ Create-a-Strap
Cut outer and inner bag rectangles
All seam allowances are 1/4″ unless otherwise stated.
Cut two 26″ x 36″ rectangles from outer fabric, and two 26″ x 36″ rectangles from inner/lining fabric.

Turn the rectangles vertically. Mark and cut out a 6″ square from each of the lower corners. Save the 6″ fabric squares to make the tote handles!
Serger set-up and basic seaming
Thread serger with Madeira Aerolock Premium Serger Thread . Set machine for a 4-thread overlock stitch.
With right sides together, serge lower base seam. Press seam to one side. Repeat for inner/lining fabric.
Press 11″ x 13″ Pellon® Peltex® One-Sided Fusible Ultra Firm Stabilizer rectangle to center base of outer fabric.
Align side seams, right sides together; serge seam. Repeat for inner/lining fabric.
Press seams to one side.
To prevent the serged edge from leaving an impression on the right side of the fabric, press seam over a sleeve board or dowel.
Form and stitch gussets on bottom of tote
With right sides together, fold side seams to align with lower base seam, forming gusset.
Serge gussets, trimming off excess fabric. Repeat for lining fabric.
Assemble, stitch, and attach lining to tote
Turn outer fabric tote right sides out.
Insert lining tote inside outer tote, wrong sides together. Pin or clip edges together with Wonder Clips .
Serge top edges
Set up serger for a standard 4-thread stitch.
Set the length and width settings at the longest and widest stitch options.
Insert Madeira Mouline, 100% Cotton, Six-Strand Floss into the upper and lower loopers.
When using decorative thread in the upper and lower loopers, we use the “lasso technique” along with Baby Lock’s ExtraordinAir or Jet-Air Threading feature.
Cut about 30″ of all-purpose thread, loop in half, insert the cut ends into the threading ports, hold on to the lasso end, and push the button that threads the loopers.
Insert the decorative thread through the lasso of the all-purpose thread (as pictured below). Manually pull the ends of the all-purpose thread, which will thread the heavier thread through the loopers.
Thread needles with coordinating Madeira Aerolock Premium Serger Thread . On a scrap of fabric, test the stitch. Adjust the stitch length or width as needed.
Serge the tote top edges, trimming off approximately 1/8″. Overlap ending and beginning stitches about 1/2″.
Pull thread tails into stitching, using a large darning needle.
Make handles
Place two outer 6″ fabric squares right sides together.
Join squares by serging or stitching one edge. Press seam to one side. Repeat for inner/lining fabric, pressing seam in opposite direction.
Fuse two strips of Clover 1-1/4″ Create-a-Strap to wrong side of outer fabric handle rectangle.
Layer inner/lining fabric handle rectangle behind outer fabric handle rectangle.
Cut handles at edge of Create-a-Strap .
Place inner/lining fabric handle and outer fabric handle rectangles, wrong sides together. Serge fabric handle edges, trimming off about 1/4″ on each long edge.
Secure thread with Fray Block™ .
Speed-dry Fray Block™ by placing handles between layers of paper towel and press with a hot iron.
Fold and press under 1/2″ along handle short ends. Repeat steps above to create four tote handles.
Pin a handle at top edge of inner tote, at each side seam. Position the end of the handles 1″ from upper edge and centered 3″ over side seams. Make certain that the handle is not twisted.
Topstitch handle to tote along handle top, bottom, and sides forming a stitched rectangle.
We use the laser feature on our Baby Lock Destiny to diagonally stitch an “X” pattern, to secure handles in place. Repeat steps above and attach handle at opposite side.
Add second set of handles
Fold top tote down about 10″.
Pin a handle to inner tote at both side seams. Position handles 8″ below top edge, pin through all layers.
Place inner side of handle to inner side of tote, centering the handle ends 3″ over the sides. Extend the handle towards tote bottom.
Topstitch handle to tote following steps above.
Serging is both decorative and functional
Decorative threads in the upper and lower loopers creates a beautiful finished edge for the tote top and handles.
Big-Bigger Canvas Tote Features
For a big fabric tote, fold top edge over at secondary handles.
For bigger tote, extend tote fully up.
Reverse Big-Bigger Canvas Tote for a whole new look.
It’s time to do laundry in style!
We hope you’re inspired to serge the Big-Bigger Canvas Tote. Experiment with different decorative threads and other heavyweight fabrics. Enjoy the process.

For a chance to win a 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge from Clover, please leave a comment and share how you’d use the Big-Bigger Canvas Tote.
The randomly selected winner of a copy of Nancy Zieman’s I Sew For Fun book and DVD from Nancy’s Notions, is Rose.
Her comment is: I’m starting my 4 year old granddaughter at the sewing machine by sitting her on my lap and I guide her hands to feed the fabric. I just purchased a safety presser foot from Clover to give her a little more freedom but keep her little fingers away from the needle.

Sew Delightful Doll Clothes in Just 30 Minutes
When Joan Hinds proposed the idea of 30-Minute Doll Clothes for a Sewing With Nancy program, Nancy’s interest piqued. She asked Joan if the pieces could truly be made in just 30-minutes instead of several sewing sessions. Her answer—absolutely!
Nancy gave Joan the go-ahead to submit ideas centering on sewing for the popular 18″ dolls. She sent Nancy sketches and photos. The difficult part was to narrow down the selections for a 2-part TV series! Part 1 is featured in this Sewing With Nancy video.
Birthday Party Trio
The Birthday Party Trio is a double skirt, camisole, and leggings combo. It’s a mix and match ensemble that is a breeze to create. In the 30-Minute Doll Clothes book and DVD and on the TV show you’ll see how flat-construction tips streamline the process.
Pretty and Perky Combo
Dig through your fabric scrap box and search for a pretty little print. With just a few straight seams and 30 minutes of time, you’ll be able to create a skirt. Spend another half-hour of time and stitch a top. The result is a pretty and perky combo.
Speedy Sundress
Your favorite little girl can have an extensive doll wardrobe using Joan’s simple patterns and speedy sewing tips. This sundress, the Speedy Sundress to be exact, is so quick to sew that you could create two dresses in just about the same time as sewing one of them. Simplified techniques make it possible.
Bonus Project
Joan stitched an updated version of her sundress since recording the TV show. Here are her hints:
Simply cut 2″ off the bottom edge of the original pattern. A band of two fabrics gives the dress more interest, while keeping the stitching time within 30 minutes.
Cut the top band 1-1/4″ wide and fold it in half lengthwise.
Place it over the bottom band, which is 2-1/2″ wide. Match the raw edges.
Then, stitch the double band to the lower edge of the dress.

Tea Time
This doll is set to attend an afternoon tea party. Bolero jacket and dress—a perfect combo—like tea and cookies, will delight any little girl.
Meet Me at the Mall
Our next doll is ready to go shopping. The knit shirt, top, and skirt ensemble is the perfect outfit for a doll to wear during an imaginative Meet Me at the Mall outing.
Popular Book with Patterns!
You’ll find all the instructions and patterns for these clothes and more in the book and DVD, 30-Minute Doll Clothes. You can watch this show online—it’s the featured show this week.

The randomly selected winner of a copy of Mary Mulari’s Second Chance T-Shirt Gifts Pattern and DVD is Catherine H.
Her comment is: I was just in Tallahassee saw a t-shirt at my son’s place asked him to save it for. He was surprised one could make something from a t-shirt. I explained the items that could be made but Mary Mulari book list many items I neglected to mention to my son. I would love to win the book then I would be able to surprise him with several of the items for him, my grandson, Jack and granddaughter, Willa. I have Mary’s book on remake of sweatshirts and enjoy using it.

Lighthearted Kid-Friendly Sewing
Team Nancy Zieman is honored to carry on Nancy Zieman’s dream by continuing to share her love of sewing with you—Nancy’s dedicated viewers and readers. It is our honor to introduce you to Nancy Zieman’s I Sew For Fun program. Nancy and the Nancy Zieman Team worked nearly three years developing this unique sewing experience for adults and youth.
Nancy sewed for fun with her granddaughters, Avery and Luella. Her guess was that there are youth in your life that will enjoy the sewing experience, too. Learn to take a lighthearted approach to introducing youth to sewing. Nancy disregards lots of rules and adds a big dose of fun. Watch the one-part series, I Sew For Fun on Sewing With Nancy.
In this TV show, Nancy parallels introducing youth to the experience of sewing the same way many of us initially work with kids in the kitchen—you work together as a team. Nancy began baking chocolate chip cookies with her granddaughters. She didn’t expect them to understand the difference between a teaspoon and a tablespoon, rather she let them enjoy the activity of measuring while she guided their little hands every step of the way. The chocolate chip cookie experience lead Nancy to think about introducing her grandaughters to sewing in the same manner.
In the one-part series, I Sew For Fun on Sewing With Nancy, Nancy shares her modern approach to sewing with youth. Prepare to throw perfection out the window and just have fun. Watch Nancy and her granddaughters enjoying her team sewing-for-fun experience. Nancy shares tips for the big sewing partner, and numerous insights for involving a little sewing partner—all while making simple, easy to sew kid-friendly projects.
In the I Sew For Fun book, that accompanies this program, Nancy shares her step-by-step directions for 20 super-easy sewing projects. Give a little partner a few project and fabric options. Then, let them choose their favorite project to complete, with your guidance! You’ll plant the seeds of love for sewing that blooms with each new project. Here’s a sneak peek at the One-Button Projects (super-easy projects) included in the book:
1. Stuffed Animal Sleeping Bag
2. Reversible Headband
3. Hot Pad
4 Infinity Scarf
5 and 6 Quillows
7. Patchwork Quilt

More Rainbow Quilts made with Fabric Scraps
Do you have a variety of fabric scraps that don’t seem to coordinate? Team Nancy would like to introduce you to a system of making scrap quilts that incorporates all sizes, shapes, and prints. Today’s Sewing With Nancy guest Judy Gauthier developed an ingenious method of sorting scraps that will make scrap lovers of us all.
Rainbow Quilts for Scrap Lovers is the title of Judy’s book with C&T Publishing; it’s also the focus of the our two-part series, of the same title, on Sewing With Nancy. Watch part one here.
Aromatic Rings Quilt
During this episode, learn the process of adding spacing or a neutral area in a quilt. Judy’s design, Aromatic Rings, features many prints in the ring that would usually clash if neutral fabrics weren’t used in the background. You’ll soon see that scraps of fabric with large, medium, and small prints can be effectively used together on this episode of Rainbow Quilts for Scrap Lovers Part Two on Sewing With Nancy.
The Circus Comes to Town
Next, on this episode: The Circus Comes to Town is a quilt that features a combination of trapezoids and circles, giving the design a sense of motion. Contrary to first impressions, this is an incredibly easy quilt to make, while accommodating a wide variety of fabrics. Judy once again turned to her fabric stash to combine various sizes of prints and colors—she’ll show us how to break quilting rules, resulting in colorful, inviting designs.
Blended Hexagons Quilt
Select a slice of color from the rainbow to feature shades of the one color area for your next quilt. Judy found herself with an abundance of pink and coral scraps, which where the perfect candidates for the Blended Hexagons design. With this, the last quilt in this mini-series, learn how to sort and combine monochromatic fabric colors and piece them in this unique hexagon design.
Rainbow Quilts for Scrap Lovers Starter Kit
You’ll feel like you’ve taken a trip over the rainbow with scrap-friendly quilt designs, using remarkable techniques, and “not a scrap goes to waste.” Book includes clever tips for organizing your scraps and assembling quilts, along with 12 colorful patterns. Kit includes book, Fast2Cut Simple Squares Template, and Sewing With Nancy DVD.

Six Tips for Sewing with Knit Fabrics
Find success sewing with knits using six of Nancy Zieman’s favorite sewing tips. Follow the simple less is best principles and you’ll find knit garments are quite fun and approachable for most sewing skill levels. Here are a few tips that might help you with your next (or first) knit sewing project.
Six Easy Knit Sewing Tips
Tip #1: Choose an easy pattern
McCalls 7331 by Nancy Zieman
Look for styles and shapes with few seams, letting the drape of the fabric be the star.
Tip #2: Sew simple
McCalls 7152 by Nancy Zieman
If you’re a serger owner, here’s where a 4-thread overlock stitch should be used. It’s fast, easy, and the seam will stretch.
When using a conventional sewing machine, try a “wobble stitch.” First coined by Betty Cotton of quilting fame, this narrow zigzag (.5 width and 2.5 length) has an ever-so-slight zigzag, providing a little stretch in the seam while looking like a straight seam from the right side.
Tip #3: Sew in some stretch
McCalls 7353 by Nancy Zieman
Stabilize the shoulders of knit fabrics with clear elastic . Serge or wobble stitch over the seam, stitching over the elastic. The shoulder seams will stretch when needed without stretching out of shape or popping stitches. This tip works on shoulder seams of any length.
Tip #4: Serge off the hem
McCalls 6607 by Nancy Zieman
If you’re looking at a knit pattern with a shaped hem, make it easy on yourself; let your serger do the work. Use a 3-thread overlock stitch and serge along the hemline.
To keep the knit from stretching, serge over precut strips of wash-away stabilizer. Place the strips on the wrong side of the fabric and then serge. After serging, tear away the excess stabilizer. Presto, no stretching. (The stabilizer is what you see, under the stitches, on the wrong side of the fabric in the photos below.)
Serge each edge individually, don’t try to turn the corner. Tuck the thread tail to the wrong side and hand stitch the thread tail to the seam. Clip off the excess thread. It’s fast!
Tip #5: Double fold the edges
McCalls 7252 by Nancy Zieman
With knits, very few patterns have facings to finish the edges, one layer of fabric is all that’s used. Consider finishing the edges with a double fold.
Fold and press under 1/4-inch and straight or wobble stitch. Stitch one edge (center front seam in this example) and then the hemline. Before stitching the hemline’s double fold, place a scrap of fabric under the presser foot, stitch from the scrap (or anchor cloth) to the fabric. This anchor allows you to easily sew the thick area at the corner with even stitches.
Clip off the anchor cloth when finished.
Tip #6: Hem with fusible tape
McCalls 7290 by Nancy Zieman
Press Pellon Lite EZ-Steam II—a 1/2″ wide paper-backed fusible web—along the wrong side of the hem’s outer edges.
Remove the paper backing; then press the hem to the wrong side–at the edge of the tape. The fusible webbing provides extra stability and shaping.
Straight stitch or wobble stitch the hem.
Give these tips a try!

Her comment is: I am new to quilting so I may not be the best person to ask about creativity in quilting. However, in my opinion, the technique for the Vintage Nine Block is the most creative. I have been looking for a block pattern that is fairly easy for a beginner and beautiful when complete. This is it! I can’t wait to get started! Fabric store, here I come!

Use Fabric Scraps For Rainbow Quilts

Do you have volumes of fabric scraps? Today you’re going to learn how to sort your fabric stash into usable pieces. You might be surprised to find the fabrics you need to create scrap quilts at your fingertips. Nancy welcomed Judy Gauthier, scrap-quilting aficionado, on this episode of Sewing With Nancy.
Rainbow Quilts for Scrap Lovers is the title of Judy Gauthier’s book with C&T Publishing; it’s also the focus of this two-part series, of the same title, on Sewing With Nancy.
Packages, Boxes, and Bows Quilt
Judy shows us how to separate odd-shaped scraps by color, then create quilts with the scraps. Her quilt, Packages, Boxes, and Bows shows us why it’s important to separate fabrics by color. While revisiting scraps of fabrics, Judy was able to divide Nancy’s stash into a rainbow of color. Once the fabrics were chosen, the piecing was a joy!
Color Brick Road
If you have leftovers from making Packages, Boxes, and Bows, consider creating yet another quilt from your stash, entitled Color Brick Road. Small rectangles are cut in two sizes and the colors are sorted using the rainbow gradation as your guide. Just like Judy, you might find yourself chanting “Follow the color brick road, follow the color brick road.” Watch as w this quilt is made on Sewing With Nancy.
Fretwork Quilt
On Sewing With Nancy, learn how to make fretwork designs. This quilt style was originally carved from wood to adorn furniture or musical instruments using a fretsaw.
