Travel Gear Made Easy
Nancy met Mary Mulari early in her career at a seminar that she was presenting in Minnesota. Mary introduced Nancy to her decorated sweatshirt patterns, a novel idea back then. She didn’t limit her repertoire to embellishing sweatshirts—no, far from it! Each season Mary joined Nancy on Sewing With Nancy for another clever sewing topic. This time, Travel Gear Made Easy is the online video feature. Mary has a knack of designing fun and useful travel accessories—you’ll be impressed!
Travel Gear You’ll See in the First Episode
The Roll-Up Travel Blanket is the first project in program one of this 2-part Sewing With Nancy series, Travel Gear Made Easy. Start with 1-1/3 yd. fleece fabric and fun cotton fabric prints. Mary shares step-by-step how to add zipper pockets to hold travel documents, music players, earplugs, and more.
While you’re using the blanket as a coverup during a nap, store eyeglasses, a book, and more in the back zipper pocket.
Roll up the blanket and use as a neck pillow and loop over a luggage extension handle. It’s handy and lightweight.
In the TV show and her Book , Mary even shows how to create the Easy as 1-2-3 Zipper Pulls by combining small pieces of fabric with ponytail elastics to create user-friendly zipper pulls—it’s really as easy as 1-2-3.
Check out Mary’s ponytail elastics stash!
Mary’s clever Reminder Tags prompt you to fill your car with gas or to purchase milk. Wrap them on your car’s steering wheel and avoid being stranded on the side of the road with an empty gas tank. Don’t ask how we know this!
Find even more projects in part one of the TV show and in the book including Mary’s Fold-Up Tote, Supply Side Pouch, and Gathering Place Tray—what great gifts to make and give or keep!
Watch online.

There are 52 programs to watch online, or watch or on your iPad, iPod Touch, or iPhone.
Would you like to win a copy of Travel Gear Made Easy from Nancy’s Notions? Let us know your favorite travel gear project. We’ll choose a random winner from the comments on this week and next weeks’ Travel Gear Made Easy blog postings. The random winner will be announced on October 11.
The randomly selected winner of the Ultimate Fancy Footworks book from Nancy’s Notions is Sue C.
Her comment is: I would sure make use of the “Big Foot” since the projects I will be making for gifts have several layers of fabric. This would be a very handy tool.

Inspiration: Box Quilt Block Table Runner
We’d like to share a quilt block pattern that’s ideal for a table runner. Featured is the Box Quilt Block, which dates back to 1898, each 12-1/2″ block is made with eight half-square triangles and a center square. This pattern is included in the No-Hassle Triangles Quilt Blocks,a quilt block sampler pattern book. Streamline the piecing process by using the No-Hassle Triangle tool.
Supplies, Notions, Fabric
No-Hassle Triangle Tool
Quilting thread
Assorted fabrics/fat quarters
Batting to measure 4″ larger than the finished runner, in length and width
Backing fabric to measure 4″ larger than the finished runner, in length and width
Binding fabric
ConstructionEach block requires:
One square 4-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ (center)
Four squares 4-7/8″ x 4-7/8″ (background)
Four squares 4-7/8″ x 4-7/8″ (solid)
Press the fabric. Use June Tailor’s Quilter’s Starch to stabilize the fabrics.
In our sewing studio we always spray the fabric with Quilter’s Starch before cutting quilting strips or shapes, then press. This simple step gives the fabric crispness that translates into more accurate cutting results.
Use a cardboard template measuring 4-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ to fussy cut a design from the print to showcase a particular motif in the focus fabric.
Cut the solid and background fabrics into strips, 4-7/8″ wide. Each block will require four solid squares and four background squares.
Layer the solid and background strips to rotary cut 4-7/8″ squares.
Set the No-Hassle Triangle Tool to 4-7/8″ on the left-hand side of the tool.
Lay the tool on the square cut sets, marking the centerline with a non-permanent marking pen.
Stitch 1/4″ on each side of the marked centerline.
Chain piece shapes, sewing all the right sides, then sew left sides.
Cut apart.
Use a rotary cutter and ruler to cut along the marked line.
Press seam allowance towards the darker fabric.
Create eight pairs.
Lay out Box Quilt block following the layout.
Join squares to form a block, using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Place squares from the first column onto the second column, right sides together; stitch.
Place squares from column three onto stitched sections and join with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Press seams open.
Join rows.
Make and join three or more blocks to create the table runner.
Add an inner border—cut fabric strips 1″ wide. Add an outer border—cut fabric strips 2-1/2″ wide.
Create and add 2-1/2″ half-square triangles at all four corners.
Use the stitch in the ditch quilting technique demonstrated in the Fearless Quilting Finishes episode of Sewing With Nancy , or find that technique in Nancy’s book, Fearless Quilting Finishes.
Bind with coordinating fabric.

The randomly selected winner of a 5-in-1 Gauge by Nancy Zieman from Clover is Carolyn Newsome.
Her comment is: One would think that after 70 years of sewing, I would not need a seam ripper. But I do–often! Funny, but the eyes and hands are not what they used to be. Once, not too long ago, I purchased 5 of them, just so I could find one. One remains not yet opened; I know where it is! Lots of favorites as the above responses attest. I love each.

Ultimate Fancy Footworks Part Three
Free-motion quilting is a technique that often is intimidating to beginning quilters. Trust us, you don’t need courage to attempt free-motion quilting, only practice! Here’s the best way to practice; the stitches are completely camouflaged by textured fabric. It’s the perfect testing ground for this specialty technique, using a quilting foot.
Watch Nancy demonstrate this technique plus others during the final episode of Fancy Footworks 2, our Sewing With Nancy Online Featured Video.
A Close-up Look at the Free-Motion Quilting Foot
The Free-Motion Quilting Foot Characteristics (We’re showing the Big Foot):
A shorter shank allows the foot to ride slightly above the fabric.
The large opening in the needle area gives a clearer view of the stitching.
Big Foot, a transparent saucer-like foot, easily glides over several thickness of fabric.
Choose a fun cotton fabric print with spaces between the print images.
Place a layer of Stitch & Steam behind the fabric and pin the two fabrics together. ( Stitch & Steam shrinks up to 30%—it’s the key element in no-fear free-motion quilting!)
Set your sewing machine for a straight stitch and lower your feed dogs.
Guide fabric with your hands, stitching squiggles or shapes comparable to traditional “puzzle-pieces.” Use matching thread. (We chose contrasting thread for demonstration purposes.)
When finished, apply steam using a steam iron, and the fabric magically shrinks creating a beautiful permanent texture.
There’s more on the TV show!
Three additional presser feet are featured in Fancy Footworks 2 Part Three. Tune in and see the Bias Binding Foot—designed to assist in stitching bias tape on the edge of fabric, Sequins’ N Ribbon Foot—tames unruly trims like sequin tape, ribbon, or even rick rack, and the Buttonhole Foot.
If you missed the first two episodes, watch online: Part One, and Part Two.
To watch Sewing With Nancy on your iPad, iPod Touch, or iPhone, download the app.
Now that you are acquainted with these assorted presser feet, which one will you try first? Let us know in the comments (below) for a chance to win the Ultimate Fancy Footworks book from Nancy’s Notions. A randomly selected winner will be announced on September 27.

Nancy Zieman’s Top Ten Table Runner Sewing Tutorials
Hexagon Hit & Miss Table Runner
At first glance, this table runner looks like it’s pieced with traditional hexagons. Not so with this speedy column quilt design. The hexagon shapes are created with two halves, eliminating the intersection of three seams, otherwise known as Y-seams. With this technique, faux hexagon halves are stitched in columns with relative speed and ease. Plus, the results are dramatic with Nancy’s Hit & Miss Table Runner Tutorial .
Topsy Turvy Table RunnerMake a nontraditional Dresden plate. No round shapes here—the wedge-shapes of the Dresden are stitched, well…topsy-turvy, to create a linear look. This finished table runner is approximately 18″ x 86″. You could shorten or lengthen depending upon your table size. See how easy it is to make the Topsy-Turvy Table Runner.
No-Hassle Triangles Table Runner
Many of you have commented on the ease of creating triangles with the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge and wanted additional projects. We’re confident you’ll add the No-Hassle Triangles Table Runner to your to-do list. Made in the same style as the projects featured in Nancy’s Quick Column Quilts, triangle blocks plus column strips make for a fast, easy, and no-hassle assembly of this 21″ x 56-1/2″ No-Hassle Triangles Table Runner.
Festive Fall Table Runner
You may recognize this next table runner tutorial from the 2015 NZP Fall Table Runner Challenge. Featured is the Box Quilt Block, which dates back to 1898. Each 12-1/2″ block is made with eight half-square triangles and a center square. This pattern is included in No-Hassle Triangles Quilt Blocks, a quilt block sampler pattern book. Streamline the piecing process by using the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge.
Dresden Melody Table Runner
Think outside the traditional patchwork world and use a multisized Dresden Template to add a modern twist to a tried ‘n true design. We call it the Dresden Melody with five half-Dresden plate designs that seem to flow melodically together. The finished Dresden Melody Table Runner measures 28″ x 82″.
Heartbeat Table Runner
No matter the size—table runner to king quilt—you can sew a quick column quilt in a heartbeat! Colorful accent strips in a variety of widths make up the heartbeat pattern, while the subdued one-color strips add a perfect background for the design. In Quick Column Quilts you’ll watch Nancy stitch a queen-sized quilt. In this blog posting, we’ve scaled down the design for this Heartbeat Table Runner size, 24″ x 57″.
Silk and Ribbon Table RunnerHere’s a table runner that you can easily create in 2-hours—our kind of home décor project! Renaissance Ribbons, Silk Dupioni, and a little thread are all you’ll need. The ribbon is the unifying element in this design. The Silk and Ribbon Table Runner is a super-fast sewing project!
Pumpkins with StyleCombine in-the-hoop machine quilting with coordinating embroidery designs for a Pumpkins With Style Table Runner The possibilities for Creative Quilting Outlines…Pumpkins with Style are endless.
Charming PoinsettiasFor sewing enthusiasts, fall is so much more than a lovely season with great weather and gorgeous foliage. Fall is the start of the holiday-gift-sewing-season! It is never too early to dive into the Christmas gifts and décor projects. Jump start your holiday sewing with this exciting poinsettia embroidery pack by Amazing Designs. Sew a Pot Holder in 60 Minutes
Celebrate September as National Sewing Month and sew this quilted pot holder in 60 minutes with this free sewing tutorial. Personalize your kitchen décor and keep your hands buffered from hot dishes at the same time.
You’ll need four different fabrics for this project: 1/4 yard cotton quilting fabric, 1/4 yard coordinating cotton quilting fabric for binding, 1/4 yard of Insul-Bright , and 1/4 yard of Quilted Iron Quick Fabric .
Using a Rotary Circle Cutter , or your favorite circle cutting technique, cut two 8-1/2″ circles from both cotton print fabric and the Quilted Iron Quick Fabric.
Cut one 8-1/2″ circle from the Insul-Bright.
Create pockets for your fingers by cutting one of the cotton print fabric circles and one of the Quilted Iron Quick Fabric circles in half.
Place the wrong sides of your cotton fabric on the shiny side of the Quilted Iron Quick Fabric and zigzag the layers of each half together.
Make the base for the pot holder by layering the remaining circles of fabric— Quilted Iron Quick Fabric , shiny side down; Insul-Bright ; and cotton fabric, wrong side down.
Zigzag the three layers together around the outer edge.
Select a cotton fabric that coordinates with your cotton print to make bias trim strips.
Cut 2″ wide bias strips from yardage or from a fat quarter. Join short ends of bias strips, right sides together, with diagonal seams if cut from a fat quarter. You’ll need approximately 1-1/2 yards of continuous binding for the project.
Use Clover’s 1″ Bias Tape Maker and an iron to create bias strips.
Encase each of the straight edges of the finger pockets and stitch binding in place.
Assemble the layers of the pot holder by stacking the completed finger pockets, right side up, on the pot holder base, also right side up.
Meet the bias binding of the finger pockets in the center.
Zigzag the layers together around the outer edges.
Use the remaining bias binding to finish the outer edges, using your favorite binding technique.
Sew pot holders as gifts for friends. They make festive additions to any holiday or seasonal gathering, too—think summer barbecues, Thanksgiving or Christmas, and special birthday celebrations.
For more kitchen sewing project ideas, purchase the Hot and Handy Projects book by Nancy Zieman.

The random winner of a copy of Nancy Zieman the Rest of the Story—A Memoir of Faith, Family, and Friends by Richard Zieman is Lorraine. Her comment is, “My day was arranged around the broadcast of Sewing with Nancy. She [Nancy] was wonderful as a teacher but excelled as a person. I miss her.”

Ultimate Fancy Footworks Part Two
Nancy learned to sew using two presser feet—the all-purpose sewing foot and a zipper foot. Soon she discovered that specialty presser feet could improve her sewing skills. Much later she passed this information along in a series titled, Fancy Footworks. Not all sewing machine feet were featured in that series, so you guessed it—a sequel, Fancy Footworks 2.
A Close-up Look at the Flower Stitch Foot
What could be called the high heels of sewing machine feet, the Flower Stitch Presser Foot is a fancy-occasion presser foot. It is an ideal creative option for mid-range sewing machines.
The Flower Stitch Presser Foot Characteristics:
Rotating disk
Pattern settings: Plus to minus settings to create S—M—L flower sizes
Attachment lever that fits over the needle clamp
Attach the Flower Stitch Foot to your machine, grab a fabric scrap and a piece of stabilizer, and start experimenting with different built-in utility stitches. No fancy embroidery machine needed here.
Prepare the fabric and test
Whether testing or sewing the actual project, always back the fabric with a fusible interfacing and also a stabilizer. Nancy used Pellon Sof-Shape Interfacing and a Tear-away Hydro-stick Stabilizer.
To create the flower stitches, Nancy started with a basic zigzag stitch or satin stitch. When she found a design she liked, she wrote down her sewing machine settings and stitch number next to the flower stitchout.
When watching the Sewing With Nancy TV show, you’ll see exactly how to use this presser foot.
Our guess is that your testing sample will look a lot like Nancy’s!
When it’s time to sew on your featured fabric, be sure to add the interfacing and stabilizer mentioned above.
There’s more on the TV show!

Sew One of Nancy’s Favorite Scarves
Sew a Scarf in an evening or less! Long or short—square or rectangle—scarves are fashion statements that are as enjoyable to create, as they are to wear. Best of all, they can be created in a variety of fabrics and a minimal investment of time.
Throughout the seasons of Sewing With Nancy, you’ve seen Nancy demonstrate an array of scarf options. During this two-part series, Favorite Scarves to Sew, Nancy Zieman Productions, LLC selected a few favorite episodes that feature Nancy’s favorite scarf techniques.

The first scarf feature was—hands down—Nancy’s most favored scarf technique—the spiral scarf. Donna Fenske, one of the Sewing With Nancy designers, joins Nancy during this first episode. They begin with a long strip, make an important fold, and then sew. Magically the scarf turns from a long rectangle into a bias tube. Use rayon batiks for this technique; the fabric gracefully drapes around the neckline. The sewing description may seem contrary to logic, but with a little sewing savvy a crosswise length of fabric easily turns into a bias scarf.
Knits are the fabrics of choice when creating a continuous looped scarf. Like infinity rings or bracelets, the design cleverly includes one twist to give the scarf great shape and style. During this segment from the past, learn the secret to turning a tube into an infinite continuous loop. You’ll also learn how to create a two-toned version, as featured, or a one-color option—it will be easy to stitch-up a wardrobe of scarves.
The next scarf featured is the Chenille Scarf—first showcased in 2005, but it is as important of a style today as it was when initially introduced. Select a little over a yard of fabric, creatively cut into strips, stack the layers, stitch rows down the center, and then cut. After washing and drying, the fabric blooms and the boutique-style scarf is ready to wear.
The last scarf project of this episode features the ever-popular polyester fleece. Donna Fenske again joins Nancy to share how a fleece scarf is something you can make for the kids in your life or a project that you can sew in tandem. The scarf is functional while sporting a unique pocket shape that showcases felting accents. You’ll soon see that the felting step is a perfect how-to project for any age. It’s another favorite scarf projects that is a palette for creativity.
With instructions for over 40 different scarf variations, find the design that is perfect for your wardrobe. Fleece, rayon batiks, interlock knits, jersey, and homespun—these fabrics plus many more are candidates for your next scarf creation. Scarves can be created with a minimum of time and monetary investment. The best part is turning a rectangle of fabric into a fashionable accessory!

Ultimate Fancy Footworks
Do you ever wonder how to use specialty sewing machine presser feet? You’re not alone! Many of us rarely change presser feet and subsequently never reap the creative benefits of sewing.
The goal of this three-part Sewing With Nancy, Fancy Footworks 2, series is to put your mind at ease and show you exactly how and when to use these sometimes unique-looking feet. In the first episode, get the inside scoop on an Invisible Zipper Foot, a Walking Foot, a Roller Foot, and an Edgestitching Foot.
In the next couple weeks, we will feature episodes from this three-part series of Sewing With Nancy online videos. Click here to watch the first, second, and third episodes, plus you can reference printed information in the book, Ultimate Fancy Footworks.
First, the Invisible Zipper Foot
It was designed to do one thing and do that process well, namely to use when inserting an invisible zipper. In this TV show, Nancy breaks down the process in a few simple steps.
The
Roller Foot
For smooth sailing over varied thicknesses of fabric, stitching napped fabrics, and sewing on tacky surfaces, use the Roller Foot. See it in action gliding over fabric, alleviating the “pushing” on the underside of the foot as the feed dogs “bite” the fabric. The Roller Foot also works great when making Thread & Trim Pizza. Tune in to learn the recipe.
The
Walking Foot
The third featured foot makes the edges of a seam meet perfectly. Or, quilt multiple layers of fabric without shifting when using a Walking Foot. It’s a hard-working presser foot that most sewing and quilting enthusiasts shouldn’t be without.
The Edgestitching Foot
When a satin edge or appliquéd edge is next on your sewing agenda, use the Edgestitching Foot. Designed with an even zigzag stitch in mind, this specialty foot provides a uniform stitch, ideal for finishing edges.

The random winner of a copy of the Fast and Fleecy Accessories book, from Nancy’s Notions is Cindy K.
Her comment is: I like the texting gloves, the scarf, the cape—basically all of them. I have lots of fleece leftover from other projects and would like to use it up by making some of these patterns.
