Half-Square Triangles (HSTs)
Create Four 1/2-square triangle blocks cut from Bali Batik Tropical Cove Indigo Multi, Bali Batik Tropical Cove Cane Leaf Green and Background Fabric.Align 12-7/8″ squares right sides together, in pairs of lights and darks. Pin.

Welcome to a world of color with the look of suede! Cherrywood Hand Dyed Fabrics curates an annual art quilt exhibit that celebrates color and texture. Cherrywood Hand Dyed Fabrics have been hand-dyeing fabric for over 35 years, and have perfected the rich, suede look of this gorgeous fabric. This fabric has been washed twice/preshrunk and rinsed twice in hot water with Synthrapol Detergent—a concentrated detergent that removes excess dye.
To mark the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of The Cherrywood Challenge, Cherrywood Hand Dyed Fabrics is taking a deep dive into the murky waters of the Abyss—the earth’s most unexplored environment. THE CHALLENGE: What can you create with this curated color “family”? Create a 20″ x 20″ square quilted piece inspired by the theme “Abyss: Creatures from the Deep” with a fabric collection of dark, murky blues and bright aquas.
Plus, Cherrywood Hand Dyed Fabrics has included six “droplets” of color that will add the mysterious sparkles found in the creatures of your imagination. Use any technique you prefer to create the original design!
Notes from Cherrywood Hand Dyed Fabrics regarding the Abyss Challenge:
Please note: Complete rules are included inside each fabric bundle available for purchase.
• This challenge is about using your talents to show off the suede texture and color of Cherrywood.
• Create a 20″ x 20″ square quilted piece inspired by the theme “Abyss: Creatures from the Deep”
• The entire quilt top and binding must be made out of the The Abyss: Creatures from the Deep Challenge 2025 FAT QUARTER or HALF-YARD Bundle. No other brand of fabric may be added (with the exception of backing).
• Use ONLY the 12 colors provided in the official bundle—the beauty of the challenge is the cohesive color, size, and fabric.
• Use any technique you prefer to create the original design that stays within the theme: ABYSS – Creatures from the Deep
• Use any embellishment, machine work, or handwork that stays within the official challenge-limited palette, and as long as it maintains the character of a textile quilt.
• The art piece must have a top, middle, and back held together by quilting stitches.
• Deadline: May 15, 2025. $30.00 entry fee paid at the time of submission
• Finalists will be selected to join the Traveling Exhibit. There are a limited number of spots (225) in The Traveling Exhibit. The art pieces travel around the country for over a year and must be able to withstand the journey.

Welcome to a world of color with the look of suede! Cherrywood Hand Dyed Fabrics curates an annual art quilt exhibit that celebrates color and texture. Cherrywood Hand Dyed Fabrics have been hand-dyeing fabric for over 35 years, and have perfected the rich, suede look of this gorgeous fabric. This fabric has been washed twice/preshrunk and rinsed twice in hot water with Synthrapol Detergent—a concentrated detergent that removes excess dye.
To mark the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of The Cherrywood Challenge, Cherrywood Hand Dyed Fabrics is taking a deep dive into the murky waters of the Abyss—the earth’s most unexplored environment. THE CHALLENGE: What can you create with this curated color “family”? Create a 20″ x 20″ square quilted piece inspired by the theme “Abyss: Creatures from the Deep” with a fabric collection of dark, murky blues and bright aquas.
Plus, Cherrywood Hand Dyed Fabrics has included six “droplets” of color that will add the mysterious sparkles found in the creatures of your imagination. Use any technique you prefer to create the original design!
Notes from Cherrywood Hand Dyed Fabrics regarding the Abyss Challenge:
Please note: Complete rules are included inside each fabric bundle available for purchase.
• This challenge is about using your talents to show off the suede texture and color of Cherrywood.
• Create a 20″ x 20″ square quilted piece inspired by the theme “Abyss: Creatures from the Deep”
• The entire quilt top and binding must be made out of the The Abyss: Creatures from the Deep Challenge 2025 FAT QUARTER or HALF-YARD Bundle. No other brand of fabric may be added (with the exception of backing).
• Use ONLY the 12 colors provided in the official bundle—the beauty of the challenge is the cohesive color, size, and fabric.
• Use any technique you prefer to create the original design that stays within the theme: ABYSS – Creatures from the Deep
• Use any embellishment, machine work, or handwork that stays within the official challenge-limited palette, and as long as it maintains the character of a textile quilt.
• The art piece must have a top, middle, and back held together by quilting stitches.
• Deadline: May 15, 2025. $30.00 entry fee paid at the time of submission
• Finalists will be selected to join the Traveling Exhibit. There are a limited number of spots (225) in The Traveling Exhibit. The art pieces travel around the country for over a year and must be able to withstand the journey.
