Well, jeez, if THOSE experts say it… Actually, you are wrong. When this first came up, the story, the ‘myth’, was that Bryan was forced to use Barbara. Bryan told me that wasn’t the case…he could have used Cass or Helena, he chose Barbara. And I am baffled about the defending dc thing, my sympathies here lie with Bryan, who has to rewrite, and with the readers, who are justifiably disappointed. Bryan choosing Barbara doesn’t make the story any less disappointing for Steph fans.
Gail I’ll be honest I’m shocked he could have chosen Cass, given that the response to when will Cass come back is pretty much the same answer to when will we see Steph back.
In any case if what you say is true, then that contradicts what Dan said in San Diego
From Comic Book Resources
“That is true, and there’s a reason for it,” DiDio said in response to the fan’s question, noting that he supported the change from the original plan, as it falls in line with the Smallville practice of bringing the iconic versions of DC heroes into that television world. “If we’re going to introduce a character into the ‘Smallville’ world, I want them to be the most iconic versions like Barbara Gordon or Dick Grayson, and maybe down the road we can do more.”
That doesn’t fit with what Bryan is saying.
Understood…I misread the letter because I was ON A BOAT. he said possibly Katana, not Cass. Sorry, same thing applies tough, they would have to do some redrawing, I imagine.
That makes sense given Katana’s in Beware the Batman. So Bryan was probably given a choice of characters that currently exist in the DCU.
I really hope you aren’t taking any of the frustration we have personally. I have nothing but the highest respect for you and your work.
No, it’s okay, I understand people are disappointed.
But I feel I interjected myself here where I don’t really belong, I don’t know all the details at all. My intentions were good, I wanted to propose that boycotting Barbara appearances, especially in Smallville, would be a shame…the last thing I would want to do is make things more complicated for all the people involved.
It’s just a book I really like done by some very good friends and I want it to succeed, that’s all. My sincere apologies if that caused anyone any grief, it was totally just my opinion, nothing else.
I like everyone involved in this project including editorial, I hope people will give it a try if they are fans of Smallville, BQM, DC, Superman, Cat Staggs, or just good comics.

Also, holy crap, people should pick up Darwyn Cooke’s adaptations of the PARKER novels…finally got to start one and couldn’t put my iPad down til I’d read the whole thing. GREAT hard boiled crime drama, you need these!

APE IN A CAPE: This Steph Thing
Since this Smallville thing happened, I keep reading how mean dc is to make Bryan choose Babs for the book to replace…
Well, jeez, if THOSE experts say it… Actually, you are wrong. When this first came up, the story, the ‘myth’, was that Bryan was forced to use Barbara. Bryan choosing Barbara doesn’t make the story any less disappointing for Steph fans.So when art is already done to look like Steph (a taller blonde white girl) you’re going to honestly say Cass was a real option to use
really
Saying something like that makes me doubt Helena was a real option either, which pretty much left Barbara. Especially because a good part of the writing was done as well and there’s no way to make Helena’s or Cass’s personalities line up with Steph. Since you’ve been writing Barbara with a pale imitation of Steph’s voice for nearly a year now, no doubt Steph in Smallville could be fudged a bit to be Barbara.
And you’re just arguing semantics with what the “myth” was really about. DC forced him to not use Steph at the last minute. That is true. The bit about it being “his choice” to use Barbara is irrelevant, because there were no other feasible options. Stop trying to guilt people into buying the book; it makes you come off as a shill for the company. Nobody’s going to start buying a book they weren’t going to buy before just because Barbara is in it. She’s everywhere! It’s inescapable.
Also the treatment of the fan who asked about it at Comic-Con was rude, dismissive, and awful. DC is a fucking joke of a company, and I find it hard to respect anyone who would choose to work for them, much less defend every asinine decision they make.
Well, I am going by what he told me. But ‘art being done’ just shows how these things gain momentum. Art gets redrawn ALL THE TIME. It’s common as dirt. I feel bad people are mad, they are disappointed, so am I. The whole thing sucks.
I think that what people really want is recognition FROM DC that they know their fans are angry. It truly means the world to us to hear creators like you, Gail, say that they are upset over this situation. I mean that. But what we want is for the higher ups at DC to acknowledge the fact that a large portion of their fan base is feeling hurt and betrayed.
Mostly, we don’t talk because we don’t know what to say…we all have favorites who are still on the bench, characters we miss a lot. That blows, no two ways about it. Of all the characters benched, Steph is the one people are the most raw about, so it just makes sense that this upsets them more.
Don’t know what to add, we don’t know any more than you guys. :(

Would you ever consider using...~THE MUSIC MEISTER~ as a villain in Batgirl?
Hmmmm.
I hadn’t…seems like it’d lose something in translation, but…hmmm.
