The Fallout of being “Guilty as Charged” (as being an anti-gay establishment)  apparently continues.

OH WHAT A TERRIBLE SHAME THAT THERE ARE REPERCUSSIONS FOR SUPPORTING HATE LEGISLATION.

Green Arrow & Black Canary

by Kevin Maguire

Agh, no one does facial expressions better than Maguire, his work is magical.

One of my very first assignments at Marvel, the editor asked for a funny X-men story, and asked me who I would like to draw it. The first name that came to mind was Kevin Maguire, but I was brand new, and of course, the very idea that he would draw one of my scripts was ridiculous.

So I named some names…and the editor said, Hey, how about Kevin Maguire?

Yes. Holy crap, yes. Yes, before you change your mind.

After the art came in, it was so gorgeous and so funny, and it was the first time the editor had ever asked me to place the balloons on the art, I had never done that before. It was AGONIZING because every balloon covered up some cool little bit of Maguire art.

Still one of my favorite jobs ever.

Was that the story about some movie being made about the X-Men? I think I know which one is it…

It is, it’s sort of my forgotten Marvel comic story, but I absolutely loved it because of Kevin.

You have to tell me, whose idea was to put a giant flamin’ penis on that panel, Maguire or yours? My friends and I loled at that for so long (no pun intended).

I mean this panel:

I am assuming it was Kevin’s.

I think my favorite joke in the whole story (it’s a story about a low budget X-men film rushed out by shlock filmmakers), is that Danny Bonaduce plays the Beast. I don’t know, that makes me laugh every time.

I know it’s corny but one day I want a love that would go through hell for me. Just like the comic books. One like Knockout and Scandal’s love.

I believe you will find that person!

A while back, an astounding Ragdoll cosplayer actually gave me the flawless Ragdoll mask that he had made (he was making another, if I remember correctly). I can’t express what a perfect version of the mask he had made, it was an astounding replica, and included the mop of red dreadlock-like hair…

I’m not going to lie, I would have been screaming SO loud if that happened to me O.O;

It sounds like a lovely gift though

But probably slightly horrifying to see in the dark when you’re not expecting it

I don’t believe I even thought, “Oh, my god, RAGDOLL IS IN MY HOUSE.”

I think the first thought I had was, “Some damaged stalker got IN MY HOUSE AND LEFT A RAGDOLL ON MY SOFA.”

Funny story in retrospect, but am I the only one sideyeing the use of the word “damaged” here?

Ah, crap, you’re right. I was trying to be cautious, too.

I’m sorry to anyone who took offense, to be honest, I’m not 100% what the best way to say this would be.

Since becoming a pro writer, I actually have dealt with some very scary situations…one man wrote letters saying how he wanted to hurt people, and was going to commit a ‘comic book apocalypse,’ at an event I was attending in Texas. We had undercover cops in the parking lot, and an escape route planned. The man left two bullets at the store to let us know he was serious. So my mind did go there, especially in light of another round of very disturbing letters from a different writer entirely.

I know a lot of people are suffering with mental conditions beyond their control. If ‘damaged’ is the wrong word, and it does sound pretty wrong when I look at it, I am not sure what the right word is. I make no excuse. I am really sorry to anyone who took offense, ignorance on my part is no excuse.

I am very sorry.

Y’know what? No. If a man breaks into your house, just to leave a creepy-as-fuck doll of a character from a comic you wrote a yearish ago, and nothing else? Probably some level of damage there.

This is like the people saying it’s ableist to call the Colorado shooter “crazy”.

People who are struggling with these conditions have enough to deal with without painful labels. I appreciate the thought, but I am happy to update the language I use if it makes a difference to the people who have this in their lives.

As someone who has been institutionalized more than once, trust me, how people refer to us is the least of our worries.

Totally understand, just think language is something we CAN improve upon.

I always said, Black Canary is a better fighter.

But you fuck with Helena Bertinelli at your own sad peril, brother.

If so, why?

No judgment here whatsoever, I just like to ask this question once in a while.

Also, if you have aspirations to write professionally, do you think fanfic has helped or hurt you, realistically?

Again, really just curious to hear…

HURT YOUR CHANCES? IT’S PRACTICALLY MANDATORY!  :)

Do you ever get upset when a character you've written for and fallen in love with gets re-written or written in away you don't necessarily like by another writer?

Yes, it happens all the time. Even when some writers have the best of intentions, if you let a character into your heart, even if you didn’t create that character, it hurts to see them with someone else’s voice.

I know I should be grown up about it, but it’s difficult sometimes.

The reverse is when someone does a GREAT job with your characters, that’s a happy, happy day.

Also, I have messed up with other people’s characters sometimes and you just feel guilty FOREVER.
