Even gay I’d still watch her change. How can you not appreciate such naked beauty?

Heh. Several gay guys said that at the time, as well.  Point taken, she’s still Helena and she has her allure!

I go to cosmetology school and a woman of color turned me down as their stylist just because i am white. right in front of my face she explained she did not what a white person doing her hair and requested a person of color. the school asked her to leave because…

I am also a licensed cosmetologist and I can say categorically that NONE of the white girls I went to school with had any experience working with African American hair. I myself only learned to do it by practicing on friends and reading about it. I should also add that that wasn’t nearly enough practical experience and so I was still terrible at it.

I don’t blame the customer one bit.

I have to say this "I worked for ages on a baby Birds of Prey-type presentation (with Spoiler, Misfit, Bumblebee, and Black Alice)." sounds awesome. I'm sad they didn't bite.

They never really ASKED for it, was the problem. It was just something I kept trying to push on them and that probably rarely works, ever. You need to have an editor really champion a new concept to get it approved, and I had just said, WE MUST DO THIS!

Which isn’t how it’s normally done, basically.

On the night the new52 were announced, I was kind of shocked that there were so few female creators and that several favorite characters were benched. I kinda misunderstood the mandate, and I wasn’t aware that other women were coming (though not enough) and that some had been asked but couldn’t commit at the time (though not enough).

So I wrote a long letter about the kind of book I thought was needed and would really help, Baby Bop (it wasn’t called that but I don’t want to use the real name just in case something does come up).

The idea was Steph as Spoiler leading a team featuring a de-aged  super-brilliant Bumblebee, and Misfit, and Black Alice.

Now, to give full credit, they dd listen, and they did consider it. They asked for revisions several times because of conflicts with other books or because it didn’t match what they wanted for one character or another. It went through some fairly drastic different takes, trying to find one that they would bite on, including a digital comic concept.

But it was felt that it might infringe a little bit on what Dustin is doing with his digital book, so that was out.

Basically, it didn’t have a champion in the office, and all the editors are already swamped with their own books.

I don’t blame anyone, tons of books are pitched and only a handful every few months are greenlighted, but I desperately wanted those characters unbenched. Even forgetting how beloved they are (and I think it’s unlikely any would get a solo shot anytime soon), they represent visibility of young girls in comics, and that is inclusive and welcoming to young girl READERS of comics.

I still feel it’s a great concept, I think it would be a wonderful book, and I know darn well it would sell. So it’s sad, but I can’t stress enough, this stuff happens all the time. LOTS of ideas get pitched, and the writer of each of those ideas is just convinced that it’s wonderful and will be a huge hit.

Eventually, I just had to give up on it. Sad, but these things do happen. Hopefully someone else will try and succeed.

Hi Gail, you have mentioned you may have some creator owned projects in the works. This interests me because my purchases tend to be creator oweed projects. I was wondering if you could elaborate? Have i missed anything? The trades of BoP and Suicide Sqau

Thank you so much!

Yeah, I have a few things on the way.

First, LEAVING MEGALOPOLIS, that’s self-published with artist/co-creator/genius JIM CALAFIORE, who is awesome. The most successful Kickstarter fundraiser so far for a mainstream comics project! That will be out in February.

Then I have a thing for THRILLBENT.COM, called FIELD TRIP, with the brilliant Amanda Gould as co-creator and artist, that should be announced very soon, formally.

Then I am working on a couple other things I can’t talk about yet. I really felt the need to try some things without any filters, so they are pretty rowdy.

I've noticed that DC isn't squeamish about having writers pull double- or triple- or sometimes even quadruple-duty, writing several ongoing series at once. I hope this isn't too personal a question, but I was just curious: is that something you're opting o

Partly by choice and partly not…I left Firestorm because it was just not going in the direction I intended. Then I worked for ages on a baby Birds of Prey-type presentation (with Spoiler, Misfit, Bumblebee, and Black Alice). That fell through but took up an exhausting amount of time. I’ve had several projects offered that didn’t really grab me, and I’ve offered several things that didn’t go anywhere for one reason or another.

I was also working on stuff that’s gone through but hasn’t been published yet, like LEAVING MEGALOPOLIS and my project with Ethan Van Sciver, as well as a THRILLBENT book, and some outside work like Bongo and other stuff.

I took a bit of a break after Firestorm, that was just a really frustrating situation for all concerned and it was fine to just be doing one book and side projects for a while.

It’s a confusing time, there’s a lot of hurry up and wait, a lot of sort of last-minute zigzagging. If all goes well, I’ll be announcing a couple other books soon.

Rereading those Vixen/Huntress panels reminded me something that I've always wondered about -- do you pick where the italics go, or do letterers?

I do. Bold, italics, weird fonts, the writer picks where they are used. The letterer makes all kinds of other judgment calls…a good letterer is a godsend, I’m telling you.

Will you ever write for Marvel again?

Hope so. I’m looking forward to a lot of the Marvel Now stuff.
