Katharsis by *BevisMusson
I’m rather taken by Katharis from The Movement.
I am going on the assumption that she is the same Katharsis from Batgirl, but her mechanical wings in The Movement compared to Batgirl, and the new gang she’s running with show there’s a story that needs to be told there.
Plus I’d love it if Batgirl turns up in Coral City for a rematch…
It IS the same Katharsis, both sets of wings are home-made, these are a technical improvement over the previous batch.
There IS a story to tell, absolutely.
And yeah, wouldn’t it be cool if Batgirl came to Coral City to kick Katharsis’ ass, or vice versa?
Also, Bevis, I LOVE THIS DRAWING.
I know it's too early to say anything but I really enjoy your writing so far in The Movement (even though there's only been an issue out) and my favorite character is Virtue. I can't wait to see her character develop throughout issues along with the rest o
I am happy that people are already picking favorites, especially since there were only hints in that first issue of their whole stories.
We learn more every issue, including some things I think will surprise EVERYONE.
I love Virtue, too. She’s very special to me!

Carol...

Caroline Sharp, aka distractedbyshinyobjects, as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl.
Because you would be a flawless Babsgirl, my dear, and there needed to be at least one fancast for you in the tag.
And hopefully someday you’ll have the chance to show the world how absolutely awesome you would be in this role. ;-)
I can’t even breathe right now…
CSharp is one of my biggest cheerleaders with the fics and I’d like to add my vote for her to play Barbara is some capacity. Now let’s start figuring out who would play a 19-something Jason and 23-ish Dick so we can make her REALLY swoon.
I have to fully endorse this idea.
How long u in Wellington for before the con? If you want I can guide you around our nature reserve as a biolologist of the bird kind. If you're interested.
Wow, really? That sounds amazing! I am not sure of the exact schedule, the organizer has our trip very planned out. But I will check back and let you know. Thank you so much!
A Letter Makes Me Happy
Just got this in my inbox.
I’m having kind of a rough day, I’m behind on some things, a water line just broke under the cement in our driveway, so we are without water until someone can dig the whole thing up and replace the entire line, bleah.
Then I got this lovely note and things are better.
Dear Gail Simone,
I live in a rural area without any comic shops. In fact, I live in Switzerland where comics mostly mean Tintin and Asterix, and not everyone speaks English anyway. So it’s hard to get comics at all and quite impossible to get paper copies of monthly issues. Yet I kept reading about the movement on your tumblr and it sounded so amazing I was incredibly frustrated to be missing in on it.
So last weekend, after a 5 hour train journey, I arrived in Paris where I quite literally ran to the comic book stores and bought the first issue of the movement (along with many other things). As for the romantic weekend I had planned with my boyfriend, let’s just say I’m lucky he considers cuddling up while reading and discussing comics to be the peak of romance. The movement was an amazing read -definitely worth the trip in my eyes - and I can’t wait to read more. Really, I just wanted to say thank you because this whole trip was the most fun I had in a long time, and because the enjoyment I get from reading what you write is priceless.
If I ever make it to a comicon, I shall bring you chocolate but for now, words will have to do.
Love from the préalpes fribourgeoises,
Lucille

So when creating characters, how much input do you have in their design? Is it mostly artist with input from you, 50/50 collaboration, or mostly you with input from artist? Or does it depend on the artist?
USUALLY, the process goes like this.
I come up with a character. If I know the artist, I may ask them first for things they like to draw and aim the new characters at that. When writing the Secret Six ongoing, I created several new characters and asked Nicola which of them she would like to help create, and she chose Jeannette (interestingly, one of those characters eventually became Katharsis).
But usually I come up with the character, their story, their traits, and their basic look, and I give that over to the artist. Because I am not an artist, I often include reference for hairstyles and the like.
The artist draws the sketch and the editor and I might ask for adjustments.
The secret of the industry is that no all writers are good at creating new characters, some mainly do their best work on pre-existing ones. Another secret is that some artists are not great designers, even some of the most popular artists.
A guy like Joe Prado (who designed Black Alice and White Canary) is easy to work with, he’s a FANTASTIC designer, as is Nicola Scott (Misfit, Jeannette) and many others. Neil Googe designed the entire cast of Welcome to Tranquility. It’s easy with artists like that.
With artists who aren’t great at design, sometimes the tweaking is more pronounced.
My most recent experience in this was working with Freddie Williams II, who did an amazing job designing all the characters in the Movement. I am wild about the stuff he came up with, and we went through LOTS of tweaks, but they were minor things about ethnicity and hair and costume colors. The main designs were all spot on first time.
How long and how often are you allowed to borrow characters from other comics for? I'd love to see Babs and Dick get on the dynamic duo level as often as possible!
It totally depends. Usually, a guest shows up for an issue or two, the writers of their own books don’t want them to be two places at once, it can get confusing (how the bat-editors do all the coordinating, I have no idea).
Often, a character is simply not available.
But look out for a Nightwing appearance in just a couple months!

If my editors ask where I am, please tell them I can’t write any scripts because I am DEAD FROM THE CUTENESS AND ADORABLENESS.
Happy Birthday
To the wonderful artist and cosplayer, Of The Forest!

Mouse from Gail Simone’s The MOVEMENT, playing with some fancy rats. (Because fancy rats are super adorable, is why).
There is a distinct possibility that this is only funny to me because it is very late and my brain has started turning to mush.
ETA: Oh god, the anatomy didn’t look so bad when I was drawing. Whyyyyyy… @__@
You have so perfectly captured what Mouse is all about, I can’t believe it. HOW DID YOU DO THAT.
