Hahahahaa, you’re right!

That never occurred to me!

"Right in the middle of our European campaign, some quiz kid at the State Department gets the bright idea to take a photo of me. ‘For the effort,’ he says."

"I figured it’d be for recruiting W.A.C.S. and W.A.V.E.S. so I played along."

"It wasn’t."

"I was told applications for naval pilots nearly doubled."

- Birds of Prey, Volume 1 Issue 75

The great Eduardo Barreto loved drawing this story so much, he gave me the two best pages of art, including this one, that he could EASILY have sold for serious money at a convention. He did it because that’s the kind of person he was, kind and generous and wonderful and talented beyond the moon.

I loved his art, always have. And when I found out he’d be drawing this short story, I knew it couldn’t just be good, it had to be special. And I did my best and he killed on it, of course.

He was sick already at the time, and got sicker in the next couple years, and then passed away. He sent these two pages to me unexpectedly.

I still want to cry every time I look at them.

It’s a weird, wonderful thing about comics. The blowhards, the boasters? They are often the least gifted.

When you can draw like Eduardo, you can be quiet, you can be kind, you can be generous, you can be humble…

…because your artwork shouts to Heaven.

Birds of Prey #5 Vol 2

I absolutely adore the friendship between Helena and Zinda. I just wish we could see more of it.

Heh. I forgot about Zinda’s line here.

"I don’t remember giving her PERMISSION to quit."

Who else could say that about Black Canary?

LOVE YA, ZINDA BLAKE!

What would happen if a comic creator pro published a story as fan fiction online?

I keep hearing that there are a couple writers who have done this, but man, I can’t imagine it. We all are working on deadlines, and we all have personal projects. I can’t imagine taking the time to write fanfic on top of that!

Is there a list out there of everyone who is not in the new 52?

Not an official one, not that I’m aware of.

Is there any character that surprised you when you wrote them? A character you expected to be dull or a pain when they were handed to you but turned out good in the end?

It happens a lot.

Writers are human. For whatever reason, sometimes a character just doesn’t click until you get to actually write them and then you HAVE to find what it is that makes them cool to their fans.

My big example is J’onn J’onzz. I just always thought he was a bit of a mort until I got to write him, now I dearly love him. I finally got why people love the character.

Part of the fun of a shared universe is discovery, even after years of reading.
