Why does diversity so often get accused of existing just for diversity points?:

I think some people pick the marginalizations of their characters based on the dictates of the plot. Stories where a character’s marginalizations are not the main focus of the plot sometimes get accused of having them deviate from the assumed…

Gail Simone is currently trolling anti-vaxxer Jenny McCarthy on twitter and it is glorious.

I am not a fan of that woman.

I’M CRYING DID SHE SERIOUSLY BLOCK YOU

GOD BLESS

Yep, Jenny McCarthy blocked me for making fun of her ridiculous, anti-science nonsense that is helping to bring back health hazards that people worked very hard to rid us of.

Not only that, she apparently blocked several people just for following me.

I am heartbroken.

Just kidding.

Good riddance, you horrible, horrible person.

When it comes to writing a script, do you think there is ever a wrong way in going about it all? Because I find it easier combining both mediums (comic book/film) together by visualizing what I write through panels (like a storyboard), yet write a script i

I am not 100% sure what the question is, but sure, there’s a wrong way to do every aspect of comics. LOTS of wrong ways, endless wrong ways.

If you’re asking if there is an inherently wrong method to the actual scripting itself, that is less likely. No two writers do comic script formats the same.

I have a couple pieces of advice. First, give your artist both enough detail and enough freedom. That’s a balance we all have to figure out for ourselves. Don’t make them have to struggle to imagine what  you are asking for, and don’t tie them down with unnecessary specifics.

And a practical bit of advice, don’t use any format or software that is so obscure your editor will have a hard time reading it.

Other than that, they’re all different.

Hey Gail! If you were offered the opportunity to write a comic based around any of Nintendo's properties, which would you choose?

I am going to upset people here, prolly, but I never really got into the Nintendo characters that much. I know there are some great games, but I never got into them that much somehow.

Sorry!

I got a friend of mine to read The Movement because he was interested in comics that dealt with heroes "punching up", but he can't get past the usage of Kulap Vilaysack. He thinks that Katharsis is exploitative of a celebrity. I told him you were friends b

???

Kulap is a dear friend and long time comic book fanatic.

She once mentioned on her show that there were no Lao heroes in comics, and I was creating some characters for Batgirl. I talked with her hubby to see if she would be cool with it, we wanted it to be a surprise.

The character turned out to be popular, and I liked writing her, so she ended up in the Movement.

I have put lots of friends in comics, most of them are not celebrities.

I am actually not entirely positive what the question is, to be honest. She was right about there being not much Lao representation in American comics, and she shared her story with me to use for Katharsis, including crossing the Mekong with her mother as a kid.

In fact, it has also gone the other way around. She is making a documentary called SECRET ORIGIN about her journey, and it talks a lot about Katharsis.

Anyway, don’t know. But even if it was true, so what? She was thrilled, people like the character, I am just baffled.

johnnystorm0:

2014 was the first full year of comiXology Submit which saw the introduction of great new indie titles from prolific creators like Gail Simone, Jim Calafiore, Joe Benitez, Spike Trotman, Erika Moen, Douglas Rushkoff, David Gallaher, Steven Ellis, Kathryn & Stuart Immonen, Pat Mills, Franco Aureliani and Art Baltazar.

It also saw the introduction of a diverse list of new comics from creators like Joe Glass (The Pride), Tim Gibson (Moth City), Elliot Blake (The Package), Quinton Miles (Template), Benjamin Rivers (Snow: Complete Edition) and Scott Reed (Saga of a Doomed Universe) to name a few.

It’s been a personal pleasure to be able to work with such an amazing and talented group of people. It’s also been rather humbling to be entrusted with such amazing works, a responsibility I don’t take lightly.

As we continue on into 2015 I look forward to what new titles the Submit program will bring and am excited to be able to share them with you.

“Sadly, She Slayed The Less Nasty One” – Gail Simone Talks Red Sonja #14

dynamitecomics:

Here we have a writer to writer interview with two of the premiere female writers in comics. Nancy Collins, writer on Vampirella #100, talks with writer Gail Simone about Red Sonja #14, both on sale now.. The reverse of this interview will run later this weekend.

RSv214CovSubscriptBuscema

NANCY COLLINS: Is there a unifying title for this particular story arc? (I only ask because my review copy didn’t list one.)

GAIL SIMONE: It’s called “The Forgiveness of Monsters,” and the theme of the arc is how difficult and painful and essential the ability to forgive is. Red Sonja is cursed, the ability to forgive even simple transgressions is taken from her, and it very quickly becomes apparent how crushing that is. She thinks it means nothing.

She’s wrong.

Here, I am interviewed by Nancy Collins.

Nancy was a HUGE inspiration to me when I was first doing fan writing about comics. She was a Bram Stoker award winner, a really, REALLY talented writer, and she took the time to respond to my fan letters with really useful, practical information. It was invaluable to me.

But the big thing was, she was a killer comic book writer. She wrote the most underrated run on Swamp Thing ever, her origin of the character Lady Jane was just powerful beyond belief.

Nancy did other comics work, Predator and some other stuff, but she drifted away from comics and back into prose.

This bothered me a lot. So when we did Legends of Red Sonja, and I got to pick the writers, I chose all female writers, people whose work meant a lot to me. And the plan was, I was hoping Nancy would get bitten by the comic bug again.

I can’t take credit, but it worked. Now she’s writing the monthly Vampirella series and KILLING on it, and several other things, as well. She’s a unique and important voice, and I am delighted in having had a hand in bringing her back to comics, hopefully for good!

Thanks for the interview, Nancy!
