God of Comics - Gail Simone's Red Sonja - Living Myth Magazine

God of Comics - Gail Simone's Red Sonja - Living Myth Magazine:

aaron-golden:

Did the best Red Sonja epic just conclude? Yes? What thinks you?

Wow.

What a lovely article.

Often, when it’s dark and I’m tired or just blue, it can be a little sad feeling like we keep pushing the same stone up the hill, only to have some goober roll it back down to the bottom.

So, it’s a delight that people get it, and they have come to care about Sonja as much as I do. Thank you so much for this gracious, thoughtful article!

I was wondering if you think someone will bring back the Holiday Girls. (The group of college girls that would assist Wonder Woman from time to time) Or if you had the chance to do so how would you execute a return of the Holiday Girls?

Crap.

You know what, I can’t believe that never occurred to me when I was writing Wonder Woman.

Seriously. Why didn’t I do that? It never even struck my mind.

DANG.

That’s weird. I love the Holiday Girls! I am not being sarcastic, I’m genuinely miffed this never entered my brain somehow.

Why did you decide to stop writing Red Sonja?

It was like this…

I agreed to write six issues of Red Sonja. I thought, I bet I have one good Red Sonja story in me, let’s do six issues.

But I fell in love with her and extended my run to twelve issues. And a zero issue. And a five issue mini-series. And a 1977 story. And a massive crossover. And six MORE issues. So it turned out to be like doing four years worth of work (crossovers are a LOT of extra work) in a year and a half, because I loved writing her so much.

I am wild about Sonja, make no mistake. Even after doing way, way more than I had planned (and I may not be completely done!), I still am really, really blue about leaving. I can’t remember ever being quite this sad about leaving a title before.

But there’s a lot of new stuff I want to try this year and I didn’t want to give her less than my best. So we hand-picked an AMAZING writer, and I know she’s in the best hands.

I love her, we will be speaking again, I am sure. :)

Um, is it true that Wonder Woman is considered a part of the Superman line of comics? If so, why isn't she heading her own line?

I don’t think that’s precisely correct, I think it just means she’s under that group’s editor, which is simply about giving each fiefdom a proper workload. Until she has lots of spin-off books, she wouldn’t need a full time group editor.

So she has to sell lots of books. Let’s get on that!

What do you hope future creators take away from your run on Red Sonja? Not so much what plots do you want to see from her in the future, but what do you hope is the lesson learned about the character?

Probably to remember that she’s a human being, not just a pin-up.

That she has lust, she is not just an object of lust.

That she loves and fights and drinks and fornicates and ultimately is vulgar and wonderful.

I want her to be a celebration, not a stereotype.

My last issue of Red Sonja today.

I can’t even explain how hard I fell in love with the She-Devil. She’s just become one of my favorite characters ever, and working with the amazing Walter Geovani has been a non-stop delight. I loved every moment of it.

I has a sad.
