i love you. thats all.
Sigh.
I don't know what I ever did to deserve readers like this, I really don't. I'm a bit harried, I'm tired, I'm trying to finish some scripts before getting in a car for a four hour car ride to a twelve hour plane ride…I'm a bit tired and frazzled.
And then someone posts this simple, kind note.
It's very much appreciated, thank you so much. I love you back!
Terms of Enrampagement: Barbara Gordon: Kick-ass inspiration.
I cater part-time to maintain my wicked grad school habit, and this evening I overheard the best thing ever. It was a political event, and as the guests were leaving I heard a female staffer (well, I assumed she was a staffer) say "You know who inspired me to go into the political sphere? Barbara…
Wow. That is gorgeous.
You just never know what precisely is going to inspire people. Of course, that congresswoman thing hasn't been addressed in ages…anyone know when that was last referred to in continuity?
Gail, would it be possible to send you some interview questions that I could then post on my blog? It's okay if you don't have time for it and I do realize we can already ask you stuff directly on your Tumblr and whatnot, but I'd like to have some actual i
Unfortunately, I can't do that right now, I'm simply swamped and on my way to England, AND I've been sort of interviewed to death lately. :)
It's funny, but as much as I like talking about comics, I don't actually like doing interviews. I don't like to pull back the curtain on my own comics that much, and I don't like to talk about myself really at all.
That said, it is NOTHING against you, how about we try again after the holidays, is that cool?

THE Gail Simone is on Tumblr? I love you. :) Also, Batgirl #3 was one of the best things I've read in recent memory. Did I mention how it almost brought me to tears?
Awwwwwww. Thank you so much, I'm really glad you liked it.
This issue affected people quite strongly in general. I haven't had so many people say they were moved to tears in a good while. But the people that hated really hated it, as well. It's interesting.
Barbara is struggling a bit right now. There's a lot on her plate and she's not used to not being in complete control, but it's major trauma recovery. It's going to be a process for her.
I feel bad for people who push those away who are trying to help, but I also feel like sometimes, it's also the correct move. Lot of turmoil there, I think most of us have been there in our lives, you want independence and someone who cares about you misunderstands that. Kind of a different thing for a superhero to be dealing with but it's definitely very human!

TicTocRabbit: pivitor asked: So is Nightwing officially going by "Richard" now, or is that just going to be in your books? As much as...
It's an adjustment, certainly, it feels a bit weird to me, as well.
But I think their idea is that new readers and viewers collapse into giggles over his old nickname sometimes.
DC's worried that the name "Dick" will turn…
Yes, yes I can completely understand how the nickname 'Dick' is way too overt a reference to sex. Transparent bikinis on the other hand, tend to remind me more of the teletubies.
DC, if your target audience isn't mature enough to handle the word dick then they're probably not mature enough for the majority of your new titles that include sex- or to put it in more age appropriate terms, 'the nasty'- which by the way, rules out the Nightwing series itself.
To be honest, I was thinking more about the cartoons. I don't think it's such a big deal in print. I don't think it's a huge deal either way, really.
Well for the Young Justice animated series, Robin's name is Dick Grayson. They put it up on the Cartoon Network site. They apparently think the target audience for that show is mature enough to handle the name.
I haven't seen Young Justice. But putting it up on the site isn't the same as using it in the dialogue every few minutes, and having an actor say it out loud, which is what I'm talking about.
And again, I'm just guessing. And I'm not convinced it's necessary.
Hello, Mrs. Simone, this is going to be another question about Dick going as "Richard" now. I am sorry but it really confuses me. If his name was officially changed why is he still called "Dick" in Snyder's Batman run, Higgins' Nightwing run and in Batman
In case people only read the other answer, I'll answer again here. The truth is, I really don't know the thinking behind this for sure. Since he's a guest in our book, and not under my control, I followed the request to use "Rich," or "Richard," instead of "Dick," especially since when she uses his name, it's a bit sarcastic, so it fits okay.
My GUESS is that the ten billion jokes made, including on Tumblr and every message board in history, every time his nickname is used, were probably a factor, but I don't know that for sure. I did hear an editor say they thought Dick sounded old-fashioned, as it's not really in common usage that much anymore.
I know this stuff seems silly. I don't really agree with it, I don't think it's necessary, but I don't know that it's a huge change. I have no evidence at all, but I suspect the character's popularity in cartoons, films and games is probably the biggest factor. I get that it's fun for we long-term readers to snigger about it a little bit. "I don't want you, I need DICK!" sounds awkward, and is clearly a tension-deflater. You can't really unthink that they're not talking about a person, so much as a thingie. And it does get a little awkward being careful about it, so it doesn't ruin a scene at the wrong time.
I imagine it's more kids playing the games and watching the cartoons they are thinking of, than people buying comics. Not really defending it, just making a guess.
It could have just been a request from one editor, since they haven't made that change in Batman or Nightwing, where the character's home is, at least not yet. But that would be fairly odd. It could happen, but it would be odd.
So I don't have any great answers. It may be that those guys were ahead of me on the schedule and the change is coming. Or it may be that the idea was dropped.
I think it's okay in Batgirl #3, it sounds odd, but she's not being familiar at the time, she's being a little sarcastic.

DC's worried that the name "Dick" will turn away readers, but their portrayal of…
Heh, I find it funny how you tend to go for Watsonian explanations while mine tend to be Doylist (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WatsonianVersusDoylist)
To me it's a dumb move because anyone bugged by him being called Dick proabbly won't spend money on comics anyway. It's dumbing down for and audience too dumb or too "cool" to read comics.
Hopefully this is some 90s bullshit they'll drop in a while, lie Peej being a Atlantean or Guy being a shape shifting alien.
Again, and this is just my theory, is that it's more the cartoons they are concerned about, and this is likely reflecting a longer-term plan. I didn't ask, because when I had Barbara talking to Nightwing, the only time she called him by name was a bit sarcastically formal. And I'm told that so far, they haven't made the change in his own book or in Batman. So it may be an idea they already discarded.
