It's an adjustment, certainly, it feels a bit weird to me, as well.

But I think their idea is that new readers and viewers collapse into giggles over his old nickname sometimes.

DC's worried that the name "Dick" will turn away readers, but their portrayal of…

Heh, I find it funny how you tend to go for Watsonian explanations while mine tend to be Doylist (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WatsonianVersusDoylist)

To me it's a dumb move because anyone bugged by him being called Dick proabbly won't spend money on comics anyway. It's dumbing down for and audience too dumb or too "cool" to read comics.

Hopefully this is some 90s bullshit they'll drop in a while, lie Peej being a Atlantean or Guy being a shape shifting alien.

Again, and this is just my theory, is that it's more the cartoons they are concerned about, and this is likely reflecting a longer-term plan. I didn't ask, because when I had Barbara talking to Nightwing, the only time she called him by name was a bit sarcastically formal.  And I'm told that so far, they haven't made the change in his own book or in Batman. So it may be an idea they already discarded.
