Hello, Mrs. Simone, this is going to be another question about Dick going as "Richard" now. I am sorry but it really confuses me. If his name was officially changed why is he still called "Dick" in Snyder's Batman run, Higgins' Nightwing run and in Batman

In case people only read the other answer, I'll answer again here. The truth is, I really don't know the thinking behind this for sure. Since he's a guest in our book, and not under my control, I followed the request to use "Rich," or "Richard," instead of "Dick," especially since when she uses his name, it's a bit sarcastic, so it fits okay.

My GUESS is that the ten billion jokes made, including on Tumblr and every message board in history, every time his nickname is used, were probably a factor, but I don't know that for sure. I did hear an editor say they thought Dick sounded old-fashioned, as it's not really in common usage that much anymore.

I know this stuff seems silly. I don't really agree with it, I don't think it's necessary, but I don't know that it's a huge change. I have no evidence at all, but I suspect the character's popularity in cartoons, films and games is probably the biggest factor. I get that it's fun for we long-term readers to snigger about it a little bit. "I don't want you, I need DICK!" sounds awkward, and is clearly a tension-deflater. You can't really unthink that they're not talking about a person, so much as a thingie. And it does get a little awkward being careful about it, so it doesn't ruin a scene at the wrong time.

I imagine it's more kids playing the games and watching the cartoons they are thinking of, than people buying comics. Not really defending it, just making a guess.

It could have just been a request from one editor, since they haven't made that change in Batman or Nightwing, where the character's home is, at least not yet. But that would be fairly odd. It could happen, but it would be odd.

So I don't have any great answers. It may be that those guys were ahead of me on the schedule and the change is coming. Or it may be that the idea was dropped.

I think it's okay in Batgirl #3, it sounds odd, but she's not being familiar at the time, she's being a little sarcastic.
