Fangirl Moment, Reviews, and Giveaway Reminder

Last week I gave you a cover tease for SUMMONING THE NIGHT, and this week, I saw and approved the entire cover, front and back. Hopefully I can unveil it soon. Now, when I say that I "approved" the cover, I think that's really just my publisher throwing me a bone. But it's nice that they care about my opinion and attempt to accommodate some of my requests. I am no Stephen King, after all—they could very well just say, "Here's the cover. Suck on it, Bennett." I'm lucky that they are cooler...

Deathly Gum

So, as I'm working on revisions for SUMMONING THE NIGHT this past week, we had a little . . . incident in the Bennett family. I left the house one evening while the hubs was having dinner with his friend, . My mission: to procure a spiky $1.99 ball for Pug #1. His favorite toy. The toy he can't live without. (He's destroyed about 50 of these toys over the years.) I was only gone 45 minutes. I returned, expecting to be greeted with joy, but instead found Pug #1 vomiting up every stinking...

Peek-a-Boo

David Tennant alert!

Lots of things happening at Casa de Bennett, but most are behind-the-scenes and lacking flash. You know, trips to the post office and cars being repaired. Yawn. Movie-wise, this week I watched Bella Martha, a German film about a chef, and Zazie dans le métro, a French film about . . . God only knows—it was crazy and zany, and my husband and I really liked it. The best part: seeing Paris in 1960!

We also went to see Fright Night in the theater—the remake of the 1980s...

Current Project & Weekend Inspiration

I spent the last week giving my New Project serious consideration. For me, this usually means playing out a variety of scenes in my head, honing character traits, and tooling around with setting. I typically jot down notes about ideas, but lately I've been trying to keep project notes contained in single spiral-bound notebooks (as opposed to scattered around my home on bits of envelopes, napkins, and squeezed into the white margins of magazine subscription cards, which always seem to be...

Damn Fine Sweet Tea Recipe

Sweet tea—sweetened iced tea—is an institution in the southern states. Every restaurant here in Atlanta serves it, and before sugar became Enemy #1, every household made it. However, there is a right and wrong way to make sweet tea, and I am going to share the Right and Proper way, which is brewed bracingly strong and dark, and sweetened aggressively. You can trust me: I am a certified sweet tea expert.

DAMN FINE SWEET TEA

For a 2 quart pitcher of tea, you'll need:

3-4 "family size" aka "quart...

Locus Magazine Review & Summoning the Night

The August issue of Locus Magazine says some nice things about KINDLING ("a solid start to a hot new urban fantasy series"):

Regarding Summoning the Night . . . Many of you have asked me when book 2 goes on sale, and why so long between books, and what happens in book 2? Well, I can't answer all those questions, but I'll share what I can.

My editor told me that the release date for Arcadia 2 was changed from April to May, but on Simon & Schuster's website, it's just just been listed as April...

Weekend Time Machine: 1999

Hope everyone had a good weekend. It was my mom-in-law's birthday, so we made an out-of-state trip to celebrate with family. We spent a lot of time laughing as we combed through boxes in storage. Oh, the discoveries! We found my sis-in-law's HEAVILY sequined prom dress with crazy shoulder pads, awesome Molly Ringwald-esque hats from the 80s, and a hellabunch of embarrassing photos like these:

Oh, yeah, baby. The hubs and I circa 1999 at the Hollywood Wax Museum. It looks like I had no arms...

Harry Potter, Vampire Wire, and Tambuku Playlist

Narcissa Malfoy has Arcadia Bell hair. . . . Maybe this is what Cady will look like in twenty years?

Happy Friday! Tonight I'll be lining up for the final Harry Potter movie. I'm prepared to shed a few tears; I'm sure I won't be the only one. Sure, all the talk in the news about this signaling the end of an era is dramatic, but come on—it really has been a phenomenal, utterly wonderful thing, hasn't it?

Speaking of Harry, I live in a backwards  conservative town near Atlanta that made the news ...

New Giveaway and Tour of Morella

I've written a nifty short-short story for the Dark Faerie Tales/All Things Urban Fantasy month-long "Deadly Destinations" blog event. It's a sneaky tour of Morella, California, the coastal city where Arcadia lives and works. Timewise, I suppose it takes place before the events of KINDLING THE MOON, and it's structured a bit like a script. Regardless, you can read it here on Dark Faerie Tales. And while you're there, scoot on down to the comments below the post and say hello to add yourself i...
