Mustaches Are Cool

Since KINDLING was released, I've stumbled upon entire threads about Lon's pirate mustache. When I first wrote Lon, I thought readers might have trouble with his age (42) which is definitely unusual for the genre. And I suspected some folks might have issues with the age difference between him and Arcadia. Or maybe that he [...]

Writer's Rainy Afternoon

Think, think, think. Write, write, write. Revise, revise, revise. Bite nails. Drink coffee. Pick up eReader to clear mind. Not in the mood for this book. Try another. Better. Space out halfway through first chapter. Listen to Django Reinhardt. Roast some hazelnuts. Daydream. Plot. Scheme. Run through character dialogue in my head. Laugh at my [...]

Best of 2011 Lists

Arcadia, Lon, and Jupe are all humbled and honored to have made it onto several Best Of lists for book releases in 2011. Here are a few that have been brought to my attention: Heroes and Heartbreakers — Kindling picked by not one but two H&H bloggers. *sniffle* YM&KAC — Kindling made the number two [...]

Figgy Pudding

I love eccentric holiday food traditions. Having spent half my early childhood in Germany, I once associated the holidays with Saint Nicholas, who left hollow chocolate snowmen, oranges, and Haribo candy in my shoes on December 6th. I also looked forward to old-fashioned Christmas sweets like raisin-laced Stollen bread and Pfeffernusse. Since then I've lived and [...]

This and That and the Other

Page Proofs This week I've been working on page proofs for SUMMONING THE NIGHT. And by "working on," I mean rereading the book for the thousandth time. *bangs head on desk* Thus far I've only been dealing with the manuscript digitally on writing/editing/copy edits, so this is the first time I'm reading it on paper [...]

Tiki Mug of the Week: Vintage Mr. Bali Hai

Bali Hai is a tiki restaurant in San Diego that's been around since the 50s. From the Bennett tiki mug collection, here is a vintage Mr. Bali Hai, the restaurant's mascot. We don't really know the exact year this one was made, but we think it's one from the 1950s (because of the concave base). If you find yourself in San Diego, you should check this place out and let me know if the drinks are any good. My literary agent lives there. So hey, Laura: if you're reading this, next time I'm in...

Gone Fishing

A brave new world.

I know, I know. I half-promised a post about all the great books I've been reading lately. And I'll blog about them . . . umm, soon; however, right now I'm knee-deep in a new project. See that little graph on the right side of my blog? The one that says current project? That's me.

And for your viewing pleasure, the photo to the left shows what plotting looks like this time around. (Every book is different.) Each blue square is a scene. I'm sure many of these will change, as t...
