Work Update

End of the world averted, apparently. Who knew that giving someone another credit card instead of telling them to pay off the first two would be "prudent fiscal advice"? I hope people remember this later when their teenager (very reasonably) asserts that they do not need to pay off their old credit card you (…wisely?) got them but, in fact, need a bigger one instead.

Anyhow, been super busy this past week, trying to catch up on work emails, proposals, wrapping up stories (Yes, I know I need...

Messy

So that "overreaction" on my part about agents becoming e-publishers and the conflict of interests I posted about a few months back? Nothing to see here folks, move along please.

First: I don't have a dog in this fight, just an opinion and a genuine fear. If you're an agent, please feel free to browse my wares. I do have some stuff that is looking for a home.

Second: This is something that has worried me about agents since ebooks took off.

I mentioned back in May (twice, actually — here and a

Annoying Names On Facebook

You know what bothers me? When someone on Facebook has "author" before their name.

I don't know why it does, but when I'm scanning headlines of my friends, occasionally a name will pop up with "Author So and So".  This causes a mental cringe. Sometimes, due to inadvertent spamming (it my be not be, who knows) I see "Author So and So" eight or nine times. This causes many mental cringes (and a few shakes of the head).

The worst part about it is that this isn't someone like John Scalzi or...

Convention Possibilities?

I'm looking at adding a few more cons to next year's schedule.

Right now (assuming I'm invited back), I'm planning on attending Libertycon25 in Chattanooga, TN on July 13-15 (or 20-22). I'm already scheduled for Mysticon in Roanoke, VA on Feb 24-26 (driving through WV in Feb will be fun…).

I also applied for guest status at MidSouthCon (Memphis, TN) on March 23-25, and am thinking about DeepSouthCon (Huntsville, AL) on June 15-17. Any other cons I should think about attending next year and, if ...

Clarification

…for yesterday's post about Fandom Fest.

I didn't realize until this morning that despite my constant complaints about the hotel, I didn't actually name the damn place. Fandom Fest's organizers were doing the best they could, especially with what was thrown onto their laps at the last moment. 90% of the issues lay with the hotel and their staff.

Never, ever stay at the Fern Valley Hotel in Louisville, KY when they're having a con at said hotel. You'd be better off staying at a cheap Motel 6...

Fandom Fest AAR

FandomFest started off well enough. I mean, I showed up a little early Friday to get checked in and only waited a few minutes in the line to get my room. The hotel staff apologized and told me that they were out of rooms on the other side of the hotel, and asked if I wouldn't mind a room facing the parking lot. I didn't think anything of it and agreed, since I figured I wouldn't be spending a lot of time in room anyways.

I learned some valuable new rules for attending a Media/Literary Con in t...

Home Safe

Survived FandomFest, somehow. Heat was unbearable, hotel sucked, and I sold zero books. Complete loss.

On the plus side, I made it home okay. Full update and AAR tomorrow.

Night!

Passing the Word Along

but after reading this, I think we should nationally boycott airlines in general. If the airlines scream and cry foul enough (which they aren't doing right now because they received money from the government), maybe the TSA will go away?

Recovering

I think I'm starting to recover from Libertycon24… just in time for FandomFest!

Plus side: I've got everything I need for the con already packed!

Down side: I haven't unpacked and washed everything I need for the con.

Conclusion: I'll be doing laundry today.

The final decision to close Borders (unless someone buys them out at last minute, which doesn't look like it's going to happen) is going to change the landscape. I've been shopping at Borders for as long as I can remember, and even worked...

Libertycon 24 AAR

For the record, I can run on 10 hours of sleep spread across 4 days. That being said, it's not a pretty sight.

Libertycon 24 was a blast, with the launch party of Lawyers in Hell  as well as for selling more copies of Corruptor. So let's get this AAR-CE (After Action Report-Con Edition, for the non-military here) started!

Arrived mid Thursday afternoon and had absolutely no trouble checking into the hotel for once. Somehow the hotel staff got better without having any actual turnover since I...
