Lady in Red

Close, but she looks too happy for the woman I had in mind...
For some reason, the title "A Sonnet of Flame" came to mind yesterday when I was walking home. I had this image of a woman with a short sword in one hand, and a dead rose in the other, standing in the middle of a burnt and ruined field with bodies all around her. I automatically called her "Bloody" Marie Merrilac, scorned woman and destroyer of known worlds.
What the hell, right?
I have no idea where this woman came from, the title...

Peyton Manning for MVP

I'm starting this now, and I will be mocked. Ruthlessly. And many people who are Tom Brady fans will want to eviscerate me in public. With a spoon.
Peyton Manning for 2011 NFL MVP.
Hear me out before you bring out your soup spoons.
In the history of the NFL, we've heard the term "most valuable player" so many times that we've been immunized against the true meaning of the word. We believe (rightly or wrongly) that the best player on the b...

Weekend Post, OMG!
Hey, a weekend post. That means something big has happened!
Er, no. I just wanted to point out that Lawyers in Hell received a very nice review over at Aphelion webzine. It made me giggle with glee. You should check it out and spread the word.
That is all.

Two Items of Interest

Casper thinks that Dr. Evil is a pansy.
I'm still battling… whatever this is (headcold on steroids is my best guess), but I have finally managed to start feeling a tad bit better. So that means I can get back to work, right?
Yeah, sure…
I'm procrastinating right now on finishing A Promise Made, and though when I started the procrastination process I had a good reason, for the life of me I can't seem to remember what that solid reason was. Oh sure, I can complain about not having the right...

Burnt Marshmallow
A lot of people were probably expecting a 9/11 post from me. I decided that enough people were paying their respects so I saved my electrons.
Instead, I'm pimping the book (again). If you go here, you can find Corruptor on sale (print version) for only $11.89. That's eight bucks cheaper than my publisher is offering it. That's a great deal.
Also, Lawyers in Hell is available here for $16.29. That's still cheaper than anywhere else and it'll help get the next book in the series (Adventurers in...

Two Down, Three To Go
Fired off The Cold to the editor this morning after anguishing over it for two hours this morning. It appears to be done but I'm my own harshest critic, so I was very anxious this morning. Nonetheless, it's off, out of my hands, waiting for approval. That frees me up to do more writing, including wrapping up In the Shadow of Paradise, A Promise Made, and Orchimedes (all short stories). The first is done and being cleaned up, the second halfway finished and the third is… plotted-ish.
Can't...

It's Cold Here
Dreary, rainy days are the best.
The cold days let my brain finally turn around and say "Hey, we can write" while the rest of my house is freezing. Of course, this means I'm wearing a heavy sweater and am barefoot (after all, writer's are quirky, aren't they?). But this is a good thing, since one of my editors asked this morning about the status of a horror story I'm wrapping up (I swear I'm editing it right this moment, well, this moment after writing this entry) and I need the cold to...

Spam! Thwack!
Please, please, please try harder to defeat my spam filters. It's very easy to discern who you are when you tell me I have "an respectable webblog".
Please. There's nothing respectable here.
Also: better update tomorrow. Right now my brain is deep fried (like Twinkies but less tasty, unless you're a zombie). I'm going to eat and then sleep in.
I love it when I get a day off once in awhile.

Promotional Quandary
I've been watching my sales numbers slide (okay, dive bombing into ruin) and I can't help but to wonder, "How do I reverse this trend?"
A number of options came to mind. The first, naturally, is to sell the sequel. The problem is, the sequel isn't done (and I doubt the publisher would touch it even if it was complete…) and I can't really send it anywhere else, unless I self-publish it. That makes a lot of sense, but creates more work for me when I don't really have the extra time at the...

Dark Abyss
There's persistence in this business. It's how the majority of us writers get published.
I was thinking about persistence today at work and how it feels oftentimes that I am busting my butt for nothing. I realized that this was the same exact feeling I got back in 2009 when I hadn't sold a book in over two years. I was writing, submitting, getting past the first stage of submissions and then… nothing. It felt as though nothing was going right and I wasn't ever going to get past those two...
