A Gift To Me in the Form of an Angel

The moment love stops growing, it begins to die.  It’s like a tree; if a tree stops growing, it begins to die.  We can learn how to feed our love and help it continue to grow.--Thich Nhat Hanh, HOW TO LOVE
My eldest niece, Ashley, sent me a card of lily flowers.  She may not realize that she naturally knows how to keep love growing.  I hope I am also helping her to learn this as an important way of life.  It was sweet to see her seven year old handwriting (almost eight next month).  I think I’d like to take her and mom on a trip to New Mexico at some point.  I need to save some discretionary cash first.  Here were Ashley’s sweet words:
Dear Uncle Mike,Guess what!  I’m getting a slumber party on May 8th at 6:30pm at my house.  I’m inviting Lauren, Nicole and Jennifer.  When are you coming to visit me again?  I Love you so so so so so much!  I might have another party with my family.  Tell Carrie that I’m getting a slumber.Love, AshleyP.S.  It’s April 23, 1992.

Alan and I went to see a dramatic film about deception called WHITE SANDS.  We really liked it.  There’s an actor in it who someone had said I resembled (Willem Dafoe).  I don’t really see it but maybe after this film I saw a little bit of it.  Alan said, “You don’t look like him.  You’re way better looking.”“Thanks, I’ll take that,” I laughed.
The movie, WHITE SANDS, takes place in a small southwestern town and the sheriff finds a body in the desert with a suitcase filled with $500,000 CASH!  Wow!  I wish I found it (minus the dead body).   He impersonates the identity of the dead man and then an FBI investigation comes about.  It also stars Mickey Rourke (who was standing in the urinal next to me recently in West Hollywood at that LOUIS XIV Restaurant that Alan and I love so much).  The lead actress was very good also.  Her name is Maria Elizabeth Mastrontonio (must be Italian).
I’m a little bit excited about my two-week training for CHARLES SCHWAB & CO.  I get to travel to Indianapolis, Indiana.   The only thing I know about Indiana is that INDY 500 car racing thing that goes on there.  SCHWAB has a huge facility there so I guess I’ll get a lot of the formal training I need to know and I fly there on Sunday, April 26th.  I have to be ready to report on Monday, April 27th.  Dorothy sent a DESCENDING ANGEL card that I really loved.  Her descriptive words while at the beach made me want to be there.  It made me appreciate my nearby beach here in Santa Monica; however, I’ll be gone to Indianapolis soon.  Luckily, it’s a short gig.   I couldn’t answer Dorothy’s letter until I returned from Indiana.   Here were her latest words:
4-23-92Dear Michael, How could I stroll through the Art Galleries in CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA and not think of you?   I’ve never pictured you “descending” from the heavens but I often believed you were a gift to me--in the form of an ANGELand in other ways also.
It was strange to feel your presence as I walked along the bright, white sandy beach.  There are no palm trees here—just cypress.  The sun is shining bright and the breeze is warm.  A few surfers are taking advantage of the tame waves rolling in and young children and puppy dogs are teasing the smaller waves that are kissing the shore.
I’ve been out here for hours and the same question keeps coming to mind.  How am I going to live near the ocean again?  What changes am I going to have to make so that I can live the way I wish to live?  Every time I get near the ocean I have a greater appreciation for your choice to move to the land of palm trees and warm beaches.
With the spring weather upon us I hope you’re able to enjoy all of the things you moved to Southern California for.  I’m assuming you’re still busy with CHARLES SCHWAB & CO. and that you’ll soon be headed to their training center.  As always, my positive thoughts are with you.
4-26-92I called you today.  The length of your “beep” on the recorder indicates you have several messages waiting for you.  Perhaps you’re out of town?
I was listening to the tape you’d given me and thought I’d call while I finally had a full, peaceful hour to myself.   Since you aren’t available I’ve decided I should finish this card.I’m wondering what type of people you work with—have you had an opportunity to make any new friends?   Are they the type you care to have as friends?  How competitive do you have to be amongst each other?
I can hear you…What the heck is this…”50” questions or what?  Ha!    Well, hang on to your pants (yeah, the ones I once told you I liked and you told me I could take them off anytime! Ha-ha).
I have more questions!  What have you decided about your condo?   Will you be moving?  Just remember…I don’t want to hear you’ve sold your convertible for a station wagon or van!  With Love,Dorothy
While in Indiana I brought along some postcards because who knew if I’d find any at the hotel I would be staying.    I had a REFLECTIONS OF CANADA postcard for mom that I wrote before I departed.  I know she misses dad very much.  I wish I could spend more time with her.  It’s never enough.

4-26-92Dear Mom,No, this is NOT Indianapolis.  Lauren and Carrie bought me a postcard calendar from CANADA.  I guess this is TORONTO.  It looks nice.  It’s Sunday at 8:30AM and I’ll be leaving at 12:55PM today for Indianapolis, Indiana.  I still haven’t finished packing.  I can’t wait to see you in June.  It’s not that far away.I hope your hand and feet feel better.  You should take some disability time off to rest you hand from that letter sorting at work!  And…you could come here to rest for a few of those days!Love You, Michael

Balance, Power, Strength

FEAR can make a man do incredible things.--Charles Belfoure, THE PARIS ARCHITECT
Life is precious and it can be scary too.   I recall reading somewhere how we all have an inner strength that we keep hibernated.   We don’t use it until it’s necessary.  I guess I’m having these thoughts because when you have a near-death experience or a traumatic life experience it takes one to a new level if you survive it.
I experienced fearful trauma in my early 20s and I was reminded of the fear.  When one is almost drowning one’s life flashes before in snippets and you don’t really know if it’s the end.  This happened to be the day before my 21st Birthday.  We carry other stressors in life and it takes balance, power and strength to get through it.

I yearned for anything to be done that can be done when I had my appendicitis not so long ago.  My dear friend, Barbara, wrote about her recent struggle with survival.   To think it started the day after her Birthday, too.  Ouch!  She kept it brief without a lot of detail but I know how one feels.   When you don’t feel well all you can think about is getting better again:
15, April 1992Dear Michael,I guess you should know that I, too, am now without an appendix.  Unfortunately, I still have an infection from mine.
The trouble began on March 24th.   So I’m not sure when mine burst…but I had surgery on 4/6/92.  I’m still in ALTA BATES HOSPITAL.  My writing suffers from this subject.  How long did you take to recover from your removal?  At least I am on PAC BELL time and am on disability.  Last time was September 1986, so my time had come.
There’s not much else to say except I hope to get OUT soon!Love, BarbaraP.S. How is your NEW job?

It's The Little Things That Really Matter

We wake, work, eat, and sleep according to what the landlord, the owner, the banker, the politician, and the schoolmaster command, man had said.   We accept that our time belongs to them, when in truth our time belongs to ‘us’.--Viet Thanh Nguyen, THE SYMPATHIZER, a novel
My sweet niece, Leigh, turned 4 years old on March 29thand she managed to draw me a colorful, handmade card:  THANK YOU FOR MY BOOKS UNCLE MIKE. Love, Leigh I LOVE YOU UNCLE MIKE.
It’s the little things that really matter.  I was touched.
My brother, Tony, was somewhat amusing with his dry sense-of-humor.  He sent me a postcard of an 1884 French painting titled MAN AT HIS BATH by Gustave Caillebotte and wrote the following:
MIKE,Next time you visit my home, please don’t use the curtains to dry off with.ARMIJO’s
Hmmmm…I managed a chuckle.
Meanwhile, after a mentally draining day at Charles Schwab in Westwood I came home to Marina Del Rey (and I find myself there more than in my condo in West Hollywood these days).   One of the gal’s I work with named Sherry has this annoying twang of a voice.  I almost want to say, “Please don’t talk.  I can’t take your voice.”  It’s not easy when she’s in the trading room taking calls and I am trying to read.  Her voice is like a cross between Melanie Griffith and Georgia Engel (that annoying actress with the voice on the Mary Tyler Moore Show).
In any case, Alan’s card was a welcome note.   It’s the little things that really matter.I asked, "Is that supposed to be me on the card, looking out at the waves?"Alan replied, "Of course!"
Michael,
I Love You.  I hope you feel better tomorrow. I miss you.  You haven’t been yourself for a while.  I know you’re tired and stressed out but don’t miss the beauty of each day as it turns like the waves in the ocean.
Love, Alan
He sat at a table at an outdoor café and stared at a bird perched on a kiosk, wishing that he were that bird.  He could just fly off and keep going until he got to Switzerland, leaving all his troubles behind.--Charles Belfoure, THE PARIS ARCHITECT

On Borrowed Time

“Be with somebody who makes you happy.”--as heard while watching the German 2017 Dramatic Comedy, SEX, PITY AND LONELINESS
Hilarious.  I surprised Alan.  He received my postcard that I sent him from Hawaii (of the masculine Hawaiian) dated March 16, 1992.  I wrote:
Dear Alan,I am having a great time here in HAWAII with you. I ‘DO’ nee you. I love you.Sorry I forced you on that Hawaiian cruise.  I do love the following:LOVE the Hawaiian walks with you.LOVE the HILTON HAWAIIAN VILLAGE breakfasts.LOVE the catamaran ride.LOVE the tan oil spray.LOVE the International Marketplace and the 8 for $1.00 deals.LOVE the MOANA.LOVE you the MOST!LOVE Always, Michael
Well, it’s Alan’s 40th Birthday.  I still see him as ‘30’ or ‘28’.  Ha-ha.  He’s young-at-heart, like me.  The opening film for Alan’s birthday was WHITE MEN CAN’T JUMP and neither of us wanted to see it.  Ugh!  We will have to wait for a better film (as in late May).   We did have a nice time last week.  Last Thursday I sent him a simple THANK YOU card during my break time at my new job with Charles Schwab & Co:
3-26-92, Thursday 10:20AMDear Alan,Just a surprise note to let you know how special you are to me. You are the BEST and I LOVE you to the ‘maximum’!I loved our RAYMOND dinner at South Fair Oaks Avenue in Pasadena and the play we saw at the Pasadena Playhouse:  ON BORROWED TIME. The GAP outfit ‘move’ amazed and surprised me.  Thanks for making my day!  Thanks for making my LIFE!Kisses, Hugs and Then Some…LOVE, ‘You Know Who’
The ON BORROWED TIME play that Alan and I went to see was a cute comedy about death that actually debuted On-Broadway in New York City in 1938.  Conrad Bain played the lead role as GRAMPS.  It offered some good amusement.  “I love small theater,” I said, to steal a phrase from Alan’s mother, Gloria.

On April 3rd I found a cute CALIFORNIA postcard from Birda in my mailbox.  It reminded me of how much CALIFORNIA has to offer.  As Alan often says, “Why live anywhere else?”Birda wrote:
Michael,Just got back from HOLLYWOOD, SAN DIEGO and DIAMOND BAR (that’s where Bill is from).  I received your card and was happy to hear from you.  I hope all is well.  Write again soon.Always, Birda
And then there’s something special about a Black and White postcard that depicts original photography.  I received one from ‘You Know Who’….Barbara Reynolds, of course.  The postcard was printed in Paris, France in 1988.   I loved the time period it depicted.  The photo was taken in 1948 in Paris at Rue de la Cloche in the 20th Arrondissement by WILLY RONIS who is best-known for his Post-War LIFE photography in Paris and Provence.  I guess I was honored with this postcard after remembering Barbara’s birthday on March 23rd.   What goes around comes around.
4th April 92GOSH!  Thank you for the great Birthday card!Yes, I flew home on 4/1 and Alice Cofield ‘returned me’.  Then, on Thursday I got all of my mail at the post-office.  It was a fun thing to look at while waiting for tests to see if I have appendicitis.  Well, I am sure that is what I have but dealing with the medical profession is WORK!   So, I’m taking one moment at a time and waiting and preparing those important things.  I hope you are well and I’ll keep you posted.Love, Barbara

BASIC INSTINCT: To Survive

“What I need most are things to look forward to.”--as heard while watching the 2017 UK film, FINDING YOUR FEET
An instinct is defined as 'an inborn pattern of activity or tendency common to a given biological species,' such as the monarch butterflies' instinctual drive to overwinter in specific areas in Mexico. In most animal species, the most basic instinct is to survive.
The talk of tinsel town (Los Angeles) is this new movie that just came out on March 20th starring Sharon Stone, called BASIC INSTINCT.  Alan and I went to see it on the 26th (a Wednesday).  We have found that we like going to films on a weekday night to avoid the crowds.  In this film one of the best scenes was when Sharon Stone was seated in a sexy, white dress.  She uncrossed her legs and it was visibly apparent that she had no panties on.  Wow!  That was a cinematic first for a neo-noir erotic thriller. Dorothy sent me a cute Black and White postcard of a voyeur guy watching.  It was actually a Federico Fellini film clip from a 1962 film called "BOCCACCIO 70" starring Sophia Loren.  In the postcard a young admirer watches a shouting scene.  I've never seen this film.  Perhaps I should make a point to watch it.  Dorothy wrote:
3/25/92Hi Michael! So was your trip to Hawaii great, or what?  Do I need to get caught up on any dirt?  I received your postcard from the HILTON HAWAIIAN VILLAGE.  I stayed there, too—once upon a time (nice place). Are you ready to take on the world now that you’ve had your rest and relaxation?  I’m wondering what news you may have regarding possible job opportunities since you’ve been back.  My job seems to be getting more tedious and boring with a capital ‘B’!I have the motivation to buy a LOTTO ticket.  I already know some of the things I’d do with my time and cleaning house and cooking are NOT on the list!   They’ve been a low priority ever since I went on STRIKE two years ago anyway.Have you given any more thought to staying-in OR selling your home?  Are you still considering moving-in with Alan?  He must be moving-in about this time as another new elevator in his life begins.  His daughters are probably excited about the new home, too.I have to head to a store for new batteries for my FISHER PRICE recorder so I can continue to enjoy the music you sent me.  Until Later,Love, DorothyP.S.  Out of cards…need to head to Berkeley!
Ashley sent another card too:
Mar. 25, 92Dear Uncle Mike,Guess what!  I got my new pen pal.  Her name is Sara Booth.  I made a letter for her but I don’t have a fifty-cent stamp.  You won’t believe it.  She’s on the other side of the world.  She’s from AUSTRALIA!Her address is:  30 Glenside Street, Wavell Heights.  If I give you my membership card you have to give it back.   Well…never mind.I Love You, Ashley
I was mentally drained daily now that I’m on the CHARLES SCHWAB & CO. payroll.  I learn something new every day.  I am enjoying it.   Five days later Dorothy sent another card to me.  I liked this one.  It was a SIERRA CLUB card of a sole gentleman looking out at twilight in front of the moon.  It was me, thinking, wondering, and planning.  It was a regular guy using his basic instinct…

3-30-92Dear Michael,I saw YOU when I looked at this card.  I can easily see you watching the moon rise just as you’ve watched the sunset, deep in thought.
I received your unique card and I’m glad you wrote at length, filling me in on all of the latest.  I only wish that $1000 was real!   I liked your comment “IF YO COULD’VE YOU WOULD’VE” sent the real thing.  Right!  I have it in writing, so don’t forget when you win the LOTTO!
I’m really glad to hear you’re at CHARLES SCHWAB!  It seems like a company worth spending some time with, especially if they’ll put you through their training program.  And like you say, at least they’re paying you for your time.  I’m really interested in how things go for you there.Any bets on what your sister-in-law will have this time?  If she has a boy everyone will be more than ready to spoil him!  If she has another girl, the family will probably be counting on you to get the ARMIJO name passed along!   No pressure there…Ha-ha!
Your next trip may be Las Vegas, huh?   Why Vegas?  Any particular reason?
A monthly visit to ALAMEDA would be nice.  Your family would probably enjoy that, especially your oldest niece, Ashley.  You seem close to her.
Is your eczema (dry skin) getting better with the lotion?  I haven’t had it but I know it can be uncomfortable. So…you’re voting for JERRY (Windshield Wiper) BROWN for President?  I’m not waving flags for either candidate but between the two I favor BROWN at least.  I guess I remember what he was like before and I don’t feel he’s changed any.  He says a lot of things that are valid and we want to hear but he’s still a politician through and through no matter what color he paints his wagon today.   Clinton is also a politician but he admits it (and he doesn’t claim to be otherwise).  He needs to stop taking the attack personally and get on with the business at hand.   And Hillary may be academically bright but needs lessons on Public Relations.  What are us Americans to do?   Bottom line:  get the Republicans out of the White House and straighten out all of the Congress!  I’ll get off my soap box now. More later…Love, Dorothy

I Like Exotic Places

“I cannot begin my day with a confrontation.  I simply don’t have time for confrontations.”-Actor Daniel Day- Lewis as Fashion Designer, Reynolds Woodcock, in the 2017 film PHANTOM THREAD
March 18th:  It was my first day at Charles Schwab & Co. at the Westwood Branch (near UCLA).  I pretty much sat in the back room all day reading manuals about procedures with the traders (of which there were only three:  Scott Gray, Otto (nickname) and Roger.  The Branch Manager is a cheerful Irish guy named Joe McGinley.  I like his managerial style.  So far he pretty much ‘leaves me alone’.   I’m not ready for any confrontations.
The Operations Manager (who did the primary interview on me) is Natalie Littrell.  There’s another gal who I like named Kim Dykstra.  She’s a bit nonchalant and has a librarian sort of look but without her eyeglasses I find her quite sexy.  Well, it was an easy ‘first day’.  I have to go to the INDIANAPOLIS Schwab Center for formal training.  It will be a 2-week gig, so that will be interesting (I suppose).  The entire week was pretty much the same but it was most interesting to eavesdrop on the traders phone calls.
A few days later I came home to my mailbox in West Hollywood and found a letter from Paloma.   She included some photos during a recent vacation to Guadeloupe Island (no photos of Alex…just Paloma and her son, Jonathan).  Her letter made me realize that I, too, like exotic places.
18/03/92Dear Michael,I liked your last card.  Thank you.  If you want next time when I write you a letter I’ll put little squares in front of everything so you can answer faster like:
I saw FLATLINERS.  Did you like it?  YES   NOHave you seen it?  YES NOI am, of course, kidding; you sure passed my Birthday test but do you swear you didn’t look it up somewhere?
My dad is OK, Thank You.
How is your mom?   That must be hard after all of these years with you dad to now be alone.  Well, she has her ‘3’ boys and all of your little nieces.   Be nice with her.  I can tell you how important a boy is for a mom…but I’m sure you are.

About the French ACADEMY AWARD nominees…I’m glad JEANNE MOREAU got it for THE OLD LADY WHO WALKED IN THE SEA.  She is a great actress.  I can’t remember right now who got the Best Actor nominations.  Oh, I remember now that JACQUES DUTRONC got it for VAN GOGH.  In fact, Jacques is mostly known as a singer.  I will send you a tape.  I really like the person and the singer.  He hasn’t done that many movies and I haven’t seen VAN GOGH.  We might go back to the Caribbean next year but maybe to another island.  This time we would like to rent something to stay longer (at least one month, maybe two).  I would love to go to Hawaii especially since my friend, Monica, wrote me that she now has a large house by the beach.  She says she owns it.  At the end of her letter:  “Come visit in Hawaii sometime!”  Do you think that means we can stay at her house?   I’m not sure.  Hawaii is kind of far and the trip is very expensive for us poor French people.  To go to the Caribbean it is already an 8-hour flight.   I really loved it there.  What is more expensive for you rich Americans?  Hawaii or Guadeloupe?  I think you’re closer to Hawaii…but I’m not sure.   Can you believe I’m already thinking about my holidays for next year?  Don’t you dare tell me I’m going to have plenty of time to think about it!  I know you, mean Michael!

Here are a few pictures of Jonathan and me in Guadeloupe.  One of them was taken in a place called La Pointe de le Grande Vigie (that’s where the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea meet) and that’s the real color of the water.   Another one was taken in front of the CLUB MED gardens.   We used to go to their beach all of the time.  That’s my favorite one there (but we’ve also been to a lot of other gorgeous beaches).
We drove all around the island.  You can see me at the bottom of a huge waterfall called Les Chutes du Carbet.  To get there you have to walk for about half an hour and cross a jungle.  It’s hard to explain how beautiful it is.  I liked Guadeloupe way better than Africa.  The Ivory Coast was also beautiful but too wild.  I LIKE EXOTIC PLACES (but not too exotic).  On the two pictures left you can see Jonathan and I going to the JACQUES COUSTEAU Reserve.  We were on a boat with a glass bottom and in the background you can see “my boat”.  Hahaha…Funny me!
No pictures of Alexandre.   He’s not worth it.  Just kidding again…I just have a few pictures of him and he doesn’t like his photo taken.  He always takes the pictures (and my eyes are always closed or my hair is in front of my fact…stuff like that).   He will never become a photographer!  Oh well, nobody is perfect.
Don’t you miss San Francisco?I have to go now.Write me…Love, Paloma
…and another cute card from my niece, Ashley of a ZEBRA with the words imprinted inside:  I MISS YOUR SMILING FACE.   Ashley wrote:
Mar. 21, 1992Dear Uncle Mike,I miss you.  You want to know what I got Ally and Holly for their Birthday.  I got a brush and comb Baby for Ally.   And for Holly I got Tropical Ariel.  What did you get Holly and Ally?I saw this card and it reminded me that I ran out of envelopes so I went shopping with Grandma Virginia and I bought this card for you.  Grandma laughed when I showed her this card of the Zebra.Love, AshleyP.S. I Love You so much.
And speaking of exotic places…Barbara Reynolds sent a historical postcard from her Hawaii escape that depicted THE BATTLE OF NUUANU PALI:
March 23, 1992Yikes!  Violence…even here.  So how do you feel about violence?   I think sometimes you have to disagree to agree, so this island is supposed to be spiritual for me and I think I may be too philosophical.  The island is lovely.  I went snorkeling at Kealakekua Bay today with friends.  Two weeks only…Hmmm…how about two years?   Okay…I’ll try it.  Love, BarbaraP.S.  Yes, I’m on the Big Island.

Alan and I went to see a new Dramatic Romance film called HOWARD'S END.   We really loved it.  There's something about those period piece films that are such a wonderful escape.  It is based on an E.M Foster novel from 1910.   Anthony Hopkins was amazing in it as Henry Wilcox, the hard-headed businessman.  Emma Thompson was also quite extraordinary.  You can't lose when James Ivory is the Director (ROOM WITH A VIEW,  MAURICE, MR and MRS BRIDGE,

Cuchi Cuchi Coo

“I’ve always believed that we have to find our own path in life.  No one can tell another how to live.”The world was peopled with minds, whirling faster than any wind, in search of distraction and escape from the predicament of change, the dilemma of life and death—seeing purpose, security, enjoyment, trying to make sense of the mystery.  Everyone everywhere lived a confused, bitter search.  Reality never matched their dreams; happiness was just around the corner—a corner they never turned. And the source of it all was the human mind.  We all make our own sandwiches--Way of the Peaceful Warrior, a Book That Changes Lives by Dan Millman
Alan was thrilled to learn of my job offer at CHARLES SCHWAB & CO; however, I think he knew my time would be limited with this new full time job.  Alan spontaneously says, “Let’s go to Hawaii before you start on the 18th.”“What?” I asked, “We can’t.  I have to get ready.”
“For what?”
“I don’t know.”“Let’s just go.”And so, Alan makes the travel arrangements and before I knew it we were on a flight to Honolulu.   Upon our arrival I quickly wrote mom a postcard:
3-12-92Hi Mom,Here’s where I’m staying.  It’s raining here.  We got here at 4:30pm.  It took 5 ½ hours.  We are two hours behind you.CHARO is playing in a night club act at this hotel.  We will probably go see her.  Do you remember how dad liked her “cuchi cuchi coo”? Ha-ha.Love, Michael

Before I left for Hawaii I finally sent the photos I had promised to send mom from the September 1991 wedding of my first cousin, Shonette West to Andrew Freestone.  They are expecting a baby this year.  That was fast.
Photo: Shonette West While in Hawaii we enjoyed the grilled fish and went out to see the recently released new film called THE GLADIATOR.  It was impressive and inspired me to be bold and courageous at my new job.  It’s a little scary to fly back to California, knowing I start the new job the following day.
Upon arrival to my condo in West Hollywood I found a new card from Dorothy Rua.  The card was a vintage photo of two little kids playing football.  It reminded me of the days when my brothers and I would play tackle football in our front yard at 356 Magnolia Drive in Alameda.  That was fun.  Or as Edith Bunker says, “Those were the days.”
3-16-92Dear Michael,
Take a good look at those two kids and you tell me how they’re going to work this game out!  Love to be there when he reaches for the ball.  Interesting how the photo was tinted reminding you of those old water-coloring books we all used to have.
Speaking of color…loved your last card with the bright colors and the festive scene!  I love the outdoor café on the beach with boats sailing on the bright blue sea, cold tropical drinks, palm trees swaying and a good friend to share it all.  Fun….with a capital F.  No one could appreciate your cards more than I (except maybe you).
And you…you rascal---how dare you call me while I was lying in bed recovering from yet another laser treatment to tell me you are head for HAWAII!  I’m finally out and about and back at work but I can’t help thinking of you guys enjoying your tropical jaunt.  Yes, I’m jealous.  I want to be there, too!   All kidding aside I hope you enjoyed every minute of your visit and hope you two stayed out of trouble.  I still remember your PARIS story!
Your phone call was actually a very welcome surprise and did cheer me up.  I’m anxious to hear whatever you do for CHARLES SCHWAB & CO.  As I said on the phone it seems like a perfect fit for you.  My positive thoughts will work their way down the coast to you and SCHWAB.
By the way, another reason I was feeling frustrated when you called is my older sister (by 2 years), Liz, had called me from Guam a few days before.  She was headed to Vancouver and wanted me to join her last week, all expenses paid by her!  Including airfare!  And I couldn’t cancel my laser appointment because my doctor has a 3-month waiting list, so there went a wonderful opportunity.  We talked on the phone several times which made me want to be there even more but like she said, “We’ll have other opportunities” and hopefully she’ll be able to give me more notice.  So goes life…
Well guy, I hope you’re having (“had” by the time you get this card) a great, great time!  Until later…Love, Dorothy
I’m not sure when I will be going to Alameda again now with my new job.  The photos I sent mom recently made me a bit homesick for everyone.   Time will tell.   I get every weekend off and that is a major perk in-my-book.

I did manage to send mom one last Hawaiian postcard of the Super Pool at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.  I wrote:

Hi Mom,
I just spoke to you about half an hour ago.  I'm tired of hearing your voice and NOT seeing you.
It's relaxing here.  And that's exactly what we are doing:  RELAXING.
On March 18th I start the new job as an Investment Specialist at Charles Schwab & Co.  It will be fun and different.  More later, Love You, Michael

Field Of Dreams: "I Got the Job!"

“You can only go forward by making mistakes.  I’m twenty-seven, not fifty-seven.  I’m not GIVENCHY.  I’m Alexander McQueen.”--Alexander McQueen n the book by Dana Thomas, GODS AND KINGS
I love Malibu.  There’s something about it.  Alan and I had lunch at a place called GEOFFREY’s.  It has such a pleasant mood and good food.  I love it there.   I found a MALIBU postcard for mom and wrote to her this week.
March 4, 1992 Dear Mom,
Here’s where I’d love to be living.  Although after those heavy rains I wonder if the shoreline homes are still there (?) Ha-haI’m really excited about the possibility of this new CHARLES SCHWAB job.  I’ll keep you posted.Jerry Brown is moving-up in popularity.  I hope he makes it as our new President.I sent Holly a postcard of the HOLLYWOOD sign.Love You Lots!Michael
Dorothy isn’t too pleased with her current work environment.  Her latest note in the mail demonstrated that:
Michael,The attached image will give you an idea of the “sick” sense of humor around my office (and company; our corporate office faxed this to us)!I found this on my desk one morning and my boss (Bill Beard) comes over to me and says, “I really wish you wouldn’t use our XEROX machine after hours for personal use, Dorothy.  If you want pictures of yourself, use a camera!   Very, very funny!D.
Alan wrote me the biggest card I have received in a long while (it was 8 x 10 in size).  I loved the image and his handwritten words on the back of it:
3/8/92MICHAEL,Since the day I realized it (1989), I knew we were best-friends and would be forever.  I may not be the girl in the photo but I LOVE YOU VERY MUCH and think of you and me bike-riding in the FIELD OF DREAMS.Love You,I will always be there for you.Love,Alan
The day after Alan gave me this card a new dream occurred.  I got the phone call that I was hired at CHARLES SCHWAB & CO.  I’m so happy.   I got the job!  They want me right away.  The fact that IDS-American Express already processed my Series 7 and 63 license helped.  I’m already registered and they want someone that is ready to go without having to take the test.  Exciting.

Save The Best For Last

To their delight, they discovered that it was true---that once you learned to ride a bicycle, you never forgot.  Biking had been better than walking.--Charles Belfoure, THE PARIS ARCHITECT
I found that I wasn’t enjoying IDS-American Express as a Financial Planner.  I don’t even know what is going on in the business world because I’m supposed to be ‘cold calling’ all day long.   I decided to interview elsewhere with other brokerage firms, starting with FIDELITY.   I interviewed with them and it seemed to go quite well but I never heard back.  I am hoping I will hear back from CHARLES SCHWAB & CO.   They have an opening near UCLA, at the Westwood Branch office.
Photo:  Lauren I am staying at Alan’s pad in SEA COLONY more than I am at my place in West Hollywood lately.  I love the beach and the commute from Santa Monica to West LA seems to be easier.  I don’t need to get on a freeway.  I love the easy access to the beach and the ability to hop on my bike without a moment of hesitation.
I liked when Alan's daughters (Lauren and Carrie) came over.  They didn't really like going from one home (their mom's) to another (their dad's) as they'd often forget one thing or another.  I hope it improves their thinking caps.
My niece, Ashley, wrote me another letter in that cool BIKE stationery.  I read it while listening to that cool new song by Vanessa Williams called SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST
February 26, 1992Dear Uncle Mike,
Did you get my letter?  I got my labels finally!   I miss you.  I love you most.I got the one label that you put on.Kisses and Hugs,Ashley
And I loved the new Black and White card that Dorothy Rua sent me with her latest words of concern:
2-27-92Dear Michael,The hunk on your latest card is “whoever I want it to be”…pretty clever!   Let’s see:  dark hair, nice body, hmmm…have to give this one some thought.  Maybe if I keep looking at him it’ll come to me!  I liked the red heart…nice added touch.  I hope your VALENTINE’S DAY was eventful!
LIFE seems to go along pretty much the same from one day to another.  I’ve decided to limit the extra time I spend at work---getting home at 7PM gets old so fast and is much too draining.  I’m limiting my long hours to two days a week, hoping that will allow for some outdoor time as the daylight stays longer.  After so much rain it’s nice to see sunshine and blue skies this week.  Speaking of rain, your area sure received more than I’s share this month and prior.  How’d you fare?
Glad to hear you ace’d your script!  How do you feel about your new career/business so far?  Is it too soon to tell?  I know it takes a lot of time and energy but then the rewards can be great, too!   How did things go at FIDELITY INVESTMENTS?  Are the pastures any greener?
Did I tell you I saw FRIED GREEN TOMATOES?  I loved it.  The movie was so well done.  I’ll never look at BBQ sauce the same again (nor the BBQ meat that I bite into!   I saw MEDICINE MAN, too.  It had a good message but felt I could have waited for the video.  I always enjoy Sean Connery and he played his part well (as expected), but thought more could have been done with the scenery and the natives.
Rosemarie and I plan to get together tomorrow evening.  We are going to go out somewhere but now think we’ll just open a bottle of champagne at her place, munch on some goodies and talk about everything under the moon.  She’ll ask if I’ve heard from you---have to tell her I’m late responding to your last card!
Sunday I’m supposed to meet my friend, Kathy—maybe I’ll meet her in Alameda.   I feel like walking on the beach even if the sand isn’t bright white and palm trees won’t be swaying.  God, I miss the ocean, the crashing waves…I feel like talking to you.  I’ll call when I get a chance.  How are things with ALAN?  More later…Love, DorothyP.S.  I just bought a new tube of lipstick, ROSA ROSA! Photo:  Carrie …and a day later another surprise rainbow rose card from Ashley:

Dear Uncle Mike,Carrie finally wrote to me.   She asked me what color my hair and eyes are and how old I am.  She gave me candy.  I gave her some stickers that you gave me.I miss you.  I got the labels.  Carrie asked me what grad I’m in.   She spelled “SISTERS” and “TURNING” wrong.  She spelled “SISTERS” like this:  SISSTER.  She spelled “TURNING” like this:  TRUNING.I miss you.  I love you.Ashley
And a humorous postcard from Dorothy arrived the following day.  It was clearly an ASHLEY and DOROTHY mailbox week:
2-28-92Hi Michael!I mailed you a card yesterday but couldn’t help thinking of you today, too.  It’s a hot summer day in the middle of winter and everyone but me is riding around in convertibles with the tops down!  Right now I wish I was cruising down the coastline in your Black Mustang, hanging on to my wig with a big ROSA ROSA lipstick smile on my face!
Tell me you’re out there with the wind on your face and the sound of the surf beating to the rhythm of your music and it will make me feel better.  At least one of us is enjoying the outdoors!   If you are caged in a cubicle these days I don’t want to hear it. Ha-ha!
Apparently these guys on this postcard can’t find a beach, so they’ve settled for a cold drink.  I hope you’re smiling. Love, Dorothy
Dorothy may have a stale marriage but she’s over forty…so she has found a level of independence somewhere along the line.  She’s on her own.

A Lot More To Her Absence

“I always thought the expression that ‘things always work out for the best’ was a crock.  But maybe it is for the best.  Look what came into my life.”--Charles Belfoure, THE PARIS ARCHITECT
So sweet of Barbara Reynolds to provide me with her HAWAII itinerary and a handwritten letter attached to it.  It makes me remember the several trips I have taken to HAWAII, always a great retreat.
20 February 1992
Hi Mike,Here is my itinerary:Journey to Kona, Hawaii 1992HAWAIIAN AIRLINES Tel 1-800-367-5320Depart March 17 from SF to HonoluluReturn April 1 from Kona to Honolulu to SFMarch 22-26:  H MANAGO HOTEL, Captain Cook, HawaiiAll other nights (campground):  at HAPUNA BEACH Photo: Hapuna Beach My friends, Howard and Nancy, with their 1 ½ year old daughter, Sierra will be on THE island from 3/22-4/4.  They will have the first week at the same Hotel and the 2nd week at the CAMPGROUND with me (except I leave earlier)…a nice balance I believe.  I felt a little anxiety from being the vacation planner to arrange time with my friends but I’m sure there will be lots of benefits.Yes, I will have my Birthday there (March 23rd).  I also plan on being in front of TV the following Monday (The Academy Awards).  Do you watch TV or still go to the movies?  I like that the national average has cut back on time in front of THE TUBE…but movies…winter time finds me walking to the nearby theaters at least once a week.
It was amazing to receive your postcard of Oswald since Alice and I saw Oliver Stone’s JFK last Saturday.  I’m guessing you did okay with the RAIN.  I’ve been enjoying it “so” much.  I might feel differently if I were homeless.
Sorry again for my sloppy penmanship.  Alas, the bus ride home is not always smooth.
March 23, 1992
I’m watching the closing ceremony of the WINTER OLYMPICS and shall retire for sleep soon.  I received you other postcard (such a laugh).  It has been great to have two lovely warm Spring days this weekend.  I was up early yesterday and drove to Point Reyes to meet my friends:  Howard, Nancy and their baby (18 months old), Sierra.  They had stayed the night at the Yought Hostel.  We then walked along Limantour Beach.  Many birds are in this area and lots of water from our recent rains, including puddles on the path but fine for a great walk with good company.
So…how was the beach?  Lots of sunblock and the ozone problem is unfortunately predictable…large brim hat time…Hope you are doing great.Your friend With Love,Barbara
And a couple of days later I receive a letter from France (Paloma) and one from my hometown of Alameda (my niece, Ashley).  I had been wondering what happened to Paloma.  I had figured she was busy being a mother…but there was a lot more to her absence.
Le 20/02/92Dear Michael,Thank you for the T-Shirt.  That was a nice surprise.  I found it when I came back from our holidays.  I like it a lot.  That reminds me of a part of the world I really liked.  Now, just a test…when is my Birthday?  I’m sure you know now it’s in January…but what day?   I’m just being mean with you.  This year I had a terrible Birthday since that was the day they chose to operate on my father.  I think I told you before he had a cancer (of the prostate), so they had to remove it.  So as you can imagine I didn’t feel at all like having a party.   Thank God he is now OK and I hope it’s going to last.
The holidays didn’t start very well for us.  We left on the 23rd of December to to to the Funeral (I don’t know if it’s the right word.  I’ve got to buy a dictionary) of Alexander’s grandmother.  Then almost every day in Paris we went to the hospital to visit first my Aunt and then my dad.  That was pretty sad.
But then thankfully we had a great time in Guadeloupe.  We really needed it.  I loved it there.  The weather is great and it’s so beautiful.  We came back to BALARUC on the 26th of January.  That’s when I found your present!  My brother, Edouard, and his wife, Lory, arrived here the 7th of February and they left last Sunday, February 16th.  My mom also came that week from Benidorm in SPAIN (that’s where she lives most of the year).  We’ve been showing them around all week (we are not working yet).  All of this explains why I haven’t been able to write you.  We’ve been visiting really neat places like the Roguefort Caves (Societe)…you know this cheese, right?  I bought a postcard for you there but I’ll send it next time since this time I made little drawing for you on my computer.
I don’t think I will ever know NEW ORLEANS since my brother is now planning to move to New Mexico (that’s where your parents are from, right?).  He doesn’t like New Orleans anymore.  He says there are too many aggressive black people there.  While trying to speak with my sister-in-law, I noticed how bad my English is, but you already know that, right?
I guess you’ve been seeing my country a lot on TV lately because of the OLYMPICS, so far the French have been doing pretty good.  That’s a good surprise.  Did you see the Opening Show?  That was pretty special.  I liked it.
I’ve seen movies that made me think about you lately (I think you told me about them):  SEA OF LOVE with Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin;  FRANKIE AND JOHNNY (I liked PRETTY WOMAN better).  I thought this one was a little bit boring.  Have you seen it?
Well, I’d like to write some more but as usual it’s very hard.   The phone is ringing all of the time (reservations)…but as usual I promise I’ll write again soon.  My dream is to have nothing to do.  If you find this way to make money please don’t forget to tell me!Write me.  Miss you.  Love, Paloma
And from Ashley….a rainbow card: Dear Uncle Mike,I miss you too!  What did you get for Holly, Ally and Leigh?  When are you coming for a visit? When is Carrie’s Birthday?  I loved the presents.Love, AshleyP.S.  I love you. P.S. Did Carrie or Lauren get poked in the eye with a pencil?Kisses and Hugs, Ashley
