Sneak Peek Sunday!

Sneak Peek Sunday Banner It’s Sneak Peek Sunday!
Today I’m offering another 6 paragraphs from my work in progress – The Changeling.

C
oming soon to paperback and ebook at booksellers everywhere.

Setting the Stage:

In this scene, Lenox takes tea with his mother Amelia. She’s received a letter from the Fey queen that says clearly they’ll come for Lenox at the end of the year. In a twist of fate, a distant relative has passed away, giving Amelia reason to send her son out of harm’s way. (previously revealed details: Lenox is a changeling and Amelia has raised him as her own. And Queen Oonnagh plans to revive an ancient barbarism and offer Lenox as a sacrifice during the Ride to Tithe.)

The Peek:

She poured me a cup of tea and set it before me. I knew that mannerism as well as I knew my own name. Tea was the proverbial calm before the storm. I said, “Uh oh. What do you need me to fix, Mother?”

“Can’t I take tea with my baby boy?” She demurred. “You know how I like quizzing you on my blends.”

No, there was more here than that. I eyed her suspiciously and her blue eyes sparkled back at me. Lady Pendry had a penchant for dabbling. She dabbled in works of art by collecting new artists she had a hunch on, she dabbled in orchids and exotic plants, she dabbled in the Royal Ascot, specifically in the creation of enormously flamboyant hats suitable for race day, and she dabbled in Indian tea blends. She also dabbled in the lives of everyone around her. Of the latter, she possessed a keen sense and could often tell at a glance if a match could be made between this person and that. Of the art, the old dear had not one whit of business sense. Nothing showed that so well as our gallery of dubious masterpieces. Fortunately, my father had left his estate well-cared for before he died relatively young from a ruptured appendix.

I sipped her newest blend of tea and tasted jasmine, apple, oolong and something else. I voiced my appreciation and sipped again determined to identify the new flavor. “Very nice. I detect a different note, a sweeter apple? No…pear. You’ve added pear…and rosehips. A lovely blend, Mother. Your pinochle ladies with adore it.”

She smiled. “Wonderful! I’ve promised them a new flavor this afternoon. I swear darling, you have the keenest senses of anyone I have ever known.”

I chuckled. “Your pastimes have made me all I am Mother…taste this tea Lenox, smell that rose Lenox. My senses sharpened out of self-defense.” At her laugh I asked, “So what did you need of me exactly?” I raised my cup to her, “I’m certain it has nothing to do with this newest blend.”

Stars falling through the Dome

the domeI read something recently. This September was the most active month for meteors in nearly ten years. Just this week an early morning fireball streaked through the morning sky. Early-risers in Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Kentucky got to see it. Alas, I was standing at the coffee pot.

Though ambient light from encroaching civilization has taken away a portion of my dark skies, if conditions are right, we often gather with friends in our yard to watch the annual meteor showers. We’ll watch the Perseids, the Geminids, the Leonids in turn, their displays whizzing past the constellations of Perseus, Gemini and Leo.  We call them shooting stars, but they’re actually bits of comet debris and space dust. Every once in a while, we’ll see a chunk of space junk (our trash) hit the atmosphere and burn up in brilliant color on its way to earth.

Most meteors burn up and all that remains are small bits for collectors. Some have hit the earth with astounding impact (no pun intended…well maybe). In the USA we have the old Barringer Crater  in Arizona, one in Mexico, and more recently, the 1908 Tunguska event in Siberia. Of course our moon has the Tycho crater and a slew of others. Thank goodness for our atmosphere. Few people know about the chip-shot that hit the earth at the end of the Jurassic period millions of years ago. Chicxulub crater is a prehistoric impact crater buried underneath the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. That asteroid was so huge and hit with such force, it’s thought to have scorched the earth and led to a mass extinction. Now there’s a picture.

meteorsMeteors fall all the time. This site has info:

http://www.amsmeteors.org/

Here’s a documentary on the Tunguska event. Some say this was done by an air burst caused by the explosion of a comet just above the surface of the earth.

Some say a spaceship crashed!

This one is interesting too

Ancestor Appreciation Day

It’s Ancestor Appreciation Day! A Family Tree

In 1959, the October issue of Saturday Evening Post had a cover drawn by artist extraordinaire Norman Rockwell. He did many covers for that magazine. I’ve always loved his detailed work, loved too that he recycled faces. A face might be a shopkeeper in one painting and a child’s doll in the next.

That particular Saturday Evening Post cover featured a symbolic American family tree. Norman’s concept tree had branches sporting a Fur trapper and Plains Indian, a Yankee and Confederate, a ladybird (prostitute) and buccaneer, an outlaw and saloon gal, and more. They all distill down to a cute freckled-face, red-haired, boy, presumably the artist himself. In that entertaining artwork, he shows there’s a complexity to one’s heritage. Mine goes back to the first European footfalls on the new continent on one side of the family, and second generation American on the other. My husband’s goes back to the days of knights on one side and nothing but a dead end with an impassable brick wall on the other.

Genealogy often turns up surprises. My husband has found many on all side of our collective tree. History buff that I am, I know the times in which my ancestors lived. I can so clearly see their struggles to just simply survive. And yet they did. All that I am, I owe to those who came before. I give my thanks. This quote from Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 fits my sentiment perfectly:

“A dwarf on a giant’s shoulders sees the farthest of the two.”

Genealogy Links to get you started.

A wonderful resource.

Think About it Thursday

gearsQuote collector I, I found this today and it has me thinking:

The more powerful and original a mind, the more it will incline towards the religion of solitude.

– Huxley

My first thought was huh? Then I looked up a broader definition of religion.

The World English Dictionary defines religion as:

1. belief in, worship of, or obedience to a supernatural power or powers considered to be divine or to have control of human destiny
2. any formal or institutionalized expression of such belief: the Christian religion
3. the attitude and feeling of one who believes in a transcendent controlling power or powers
4. chiefly RC Church the way of life determined by the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience entered upon by monks, friars, and nuns: to enter religion
5. something of overwhelming importance to a person: football is his religion
6. archaic a. the practice of sacred ritual observances b. sacred rites and ceremonies

Is it 1, 3, 5, or 6? I see a little of each when I think about Huxley’s quote. Writers have powerful and original minds. It’s no small feat to pull a world out of the depths of your imagination. I’m wondering if all writers feel this way about solitude. There are times when I am so thoroughly in my head, I have to remember to come out for the people in my life.

Crazy Cat LadyOccasionally I find myself with very little to say in social situations and I don’t know why. I don’t like that either. It’s noticeable. My husband has even commented on this recently. He says he worries about me becoming a “crazy cat lady”. (I don’t own that picture. It belongs to Matt Groening. His cat lady has gone so batty she doesn’t even speak anymore. She blargs. lol Thanks for giving my husband a visual, Matt.)

How do you feel about solitude?

Feet to the Flames

firewalking

Firewalking — Been there, done that. And this is exactly what it looks like.

I’ve joined the October Obsession BIAM Writathon 2013 a.k.a. Book In A Month. Here’s the description:

This is a Book in a Month Writing Frenzy occurring twice a year; the first is April Madness, the second October Obsession. We lock our internal editors in THE DUNGEON and let our imaginations soar, so we can write a rough first draft of a book, work on WIPs, edit and revise, or whatever as long as we write, write, write. Browse around in the Files, Links, Photos, Polls and Database for writing tips and information. Our goal is to write and write some more. Remember: You can always fix it later!

I’ve always wanted to try the NaNoWriMo – The National Novel Writing Month, but life interfered with the last two Novembers and I have a busy fall planned. The BIAM has been called “the gentler NaNoWriMo”.

Why am I doing this? To finish my work in progress so I can leave the romance genre behind and get back to writing my magnum opus. I may return to love stories now and then, but after so many years spent working on my 5-book/500k series, it’s time to get that show on the road. The BIAM is a sort of feet to the flames nudge in that direction.

Not a bird

Hosta_fortuneii_'Francee'_IMG_6072.StortIt’s mid September and my yard is filled with blooming hostas. We have all sorts. I truly love these flowers. My husband rescued each and every plant from old yards being plowed under for big box stores and other not so negative construction. Many have come in poor condition but he’s tended them and they’ve thrived. The flowers are happy here. So are the hummingbirds. Last week I looked out the window at the largest gathering of hummingbirds I’ve ever seen here. I went for the binoculars and what did I see? Well, they weren’t birds at all. They were giant hawk moths. I’ve only ever seen them in pictures. They’re absolutely amazing. They have a three inch-long tongue and remind me of planes that fuel in flight.  Apparently this is the largest emergence of hawk moths in a long time.

Here’s a clip from the Chicago Botanic Gardens. It’s exactly what I see here:

The biggest fan, blog hops, & more

the_time_machine_large_01I’ve said before that I prefer non-fiction to fiction. On occasion, I’ll come across a novel that will just tickle my fancy and I’ll leave my reference books for a time. As far as fiction goes, I love stories with elements of history. More than that, I adore a good time-travel. Talk about capturing my fancy. What would it be like to be a person of this time thrust into the past to live by wits alone? Many years ago while my daughter was at her music lesson, I went to a large bookstore and poked around the fiction shelves. I saw a rather plain cover with a broken clock on it. Picking it up, I learned that this was the first of three novels about a WWII army nurse thrust into pre-Culloden Scotland. Wow.

I bought the hefty books (approximate 1000 pages each) and read them in a week. (I’m a very fast reader) I was hooked.

Today on Romance Books ’4′ Us, we’re hosting that very author — Diana Gabaldon. I’ve been a fan for so long and have read all of her books. I’ve even read the paperback versions until their pages have fallen out! Great story. I can’t say enough. And now this famous author and her soon-to-be-a-movie story  is a guest on my other authors’ group. The world takes some interesting turns doesn’t it?

Sneak Peek Sunday & Day 6 of Sunset on Summer Fun Blog Hop!

Sneak Peek Sunday Banner It’s Sneak Peek Sunday!
Today I’m offering another 6 paragraphs from my newest Enchanted Skye.

Available now in ebook and coming soon to paperback and ebook at booksellers everywhere. Read the legend in the Look Inside  on Amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com/Enchanted-Skye-ebook/dp/B00F0XLF5Q

Setting the Stage:

Jenna and Alex stand at the tidal pool. She explains this was where she scattered her grandmother’s ashes. Alex already knows that. He was in his shape-shifted Selkie form that day and saw her there. His older brother Lachlan swims near. Wary of the large seal, Jenna steps backward and asks Alex if they are normally so friendly.

The Peek:

“They are, and they’re overly curious.” Alex watched his brother slowly making his way toward them. He asked silently, What are ye still doing here, Lachlan?

Goin’ for that swim. The seal barked, his nostrils opening and closing made his whiskers swing to and fro.

Jenna jumped and grabbed onto Alex’s arm before releasing it just as quickly. She took several steps backward. “Are they dangerous?”

Alex narrowed his eyes at the creature who now floated on his back scratching his belly with his flipper. “They keep to themselves and are harmless if you leave them be.”

Surprised by his lecturing tone, Jenna quickly assured him, “Believe me, I wouldn’t dream of bothering them.” The seal did a barrel roll on top of the water then blew bubbles. It made Jenna laugh. “They certainly are funny animals. My grandmother and I used to love watching them at the zoo.”

Alex chuckled. “Aye, nature’s clowns.” To Lachlan he said, What d’ ye think about living in the zoo, brother? I might be able t’ arrange that for ye.

Here’s the story

Here’s a bit more from The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo ~ Scroll back a day to see the trailer. Take a peek at the first book in the series with the Look Inside feature on Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AFFFESI

This scene tickled me when I wrote it. I hope it does the same for you.

Setting the Stage:Ash, the ancient Native American shape-shifting shaman is slowly integrating himself into the modern world. At dinner with new friends, Ash drinks beer for the first time and later determines this is not a drink to underestimate, even in small quantity. He’s been staying at Livie’s house as a dog, and he needs to get back there before she does. He suspects the beer is interfering with his ability to concentrate. The following is the best slapstick by an ancient shaman.

Knowing he had to resume his wolf form at Livie’s home, he took a deep breath and shifted, but his inebriated mind was not concentrating and he ended up with a raven’s head atop his man’s body. He tried again. Forgetting that he still wore clothes, he found himself a small bird, pinned and struggling under the heavy garments that had fallen to the ground in a heap. He shifted into a feathered snake before taking the form of a mouse and working his way out of a sleeve.

The movement caught the attention of an owl on its nightly hunting foray. Just as it was about to swoop low on silent wings, intent on nabbing the large field mouse, a naked man with a mouse tail and whiskers appeared. The owl, clearly startled, flew off into the night. Laughing, Ash raised his arms and yelled after it, “This is not your night, my brotherrrr!”

Tail and whiskers absorbed into his changing form and once again bare skin grew feathers. He shifted into a raven — a six-foot-tall raven. Laughing at himself, he made his body small and flew fast to Livie’s home, albeit not in a straight line.
