It’s Abet and Aid Punsters Day!
You’ll never believe what day it is. It’s Abet and Aid Punsters Day. No kidding.
When I discovered this holiday dates back to the 1970′s, I just knew I had to delve deeper. Believe it or not there are shades and nuance to puns. Who knew? What’s more, there’s enough info for another exposé!
Wordies like me live for stuff like this. lol
What are these groan-inducing quips exactly? A pun is a use of words or phrases to exploit ambiguities and innuendos in their meaning, usually for humorous effect. In other words, a play on words. American satirist Ambrose Bierce said a pun is “A form of wit, to which wise men stoop and fools aspire”.
In the 18th century, puns were considered high humor and the people who told them were praised for their great wit. Literary figures flexed their wit through the centuries — Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Oscar Wilde, and comedians such as George Carlin were famous for their pun work. Once the stuff of genius, today’s the pun is considered lowbrow humor that simply relies upon double entendre. There’s no doubt some puns are real groaners.
For today, I’m examining the One-Word Pun. One-word puns all need some kind of context to create the play on words. Usually one simple word that sounds like a different word or has another meaning does the trick (deer vs. dear or reign vs. rain). These are called homophonic or homographic puns. Here are two homophonic puns for the day.
“Why is it so wet in England? Because many kings and queens have reigned there.”
“I bet the butcher the other day that he couldn’t reach the meat that was on the top shelf. He refused to take the bet, saying that the steaks were too high.”
Feel free to toss them out at home or in your workplace, it is Abet and Aid Punsters Day after all!

New Release & More
Today’s the day! That idea I had a few months ago has become a reality. We created a Holiday Anthology with members of the Exquisite Quills yahoo group – the companion reader/writer community to my Exquisite Quills authors’ group. What a fine bunch of people to work with. We have wonderfully imaginative holiday stories, a crew of talented editors, a fantastic cover artist (as you can see), and a seasoned formatter, all working together on our first free offering.
There are many styles among us. The group and community are composed of authors who write the full spectrum of romance from sweet to scorching, as well as suspense, mystery, and light horror. Though we had to pick and chose the short stories we took in this time around (consensus voted for happy holiday tales), all submissions were fine examples of imaginative and creative minds. It’s been a privilege to read them all. In my opinion several have such interesting concepts, they would make fantastic full-length novels.
The Exquisite Quills Holiday Anthology Vol.One is a freebie suitable for all readers — a sampling of the many styles among us with links to books and websites should readers want more. The download is available in a wide range of formats PDF and plain text, to ePub for Kindle, ipad, Nook, palm readers etc. For now it’s on the self-publishing site Smashwords.
Come get your copy and please spread the word!
http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/374815
My lovely repeat readers know by now my stories are filled with subtle symbols, layers, and metaphor. As my bio says, these hidden insights are gifts to my readers. I love tucking them here and there and it’s my hope they bring a smile when they’re discovered. My Holiday Anthology offering is no different. Someone wrote to tell me she caught my nuance in Star of Wonder. Because I’m such an odd duck, a proverbial square peg that has never fit into any shaped hole, it really makes me happy when someone “gets me”. Perhaps that’s why I play around with symbols, layers, and metaphor — I’m searching for kindred souls!
Star of Wonder has some unique facts laced into the telling. I’ve always been a story collector. In fact, I’ve been collecting them my entire life. When I hear a recounting of growing up during the Great Depression, Freedom Rides, or stories of farm life back in the day, I squirrel them away as the tasty nuggets they are. I simply love factual detail. This is why readers will find my stories believable regardless of the fancy woven among the fact. As an author, my goal is to suspend a reader’s disbelief.
The Star of Wonder tells the tale of 1936 when Rural Electrification comes to a farm house at
Christmas time. It’s based upon an actual childhood memory of someone who once lived on the old farmstead next door to me. The family Christmas tree was the first thing lit and “it was magical”. How could I not write that into a story? I hope you enjoy.
If you discover my hidden meanings in Star of Wonder (or any of my novels), do drop me a comment here. I’d love to get to know you, you square peg, you.

Satire ~ Diminution & Inflation
I’m wrapping up my exposé on satire today with Diminution and Inflation. There are more subcategories of satire, many more actually. But some are so slightly nuanced, I read them as shades of what I’ve already discussed.
I chose to put these last two examples side by side because it just made sense. Though they both shine a light on the absurdity of whatever topic is being examined, it’s all about scope — one enlarges and one reduces.
Because I’m a person who likes examples of things, I’ve found two videos. Believe me, with these chosen comedians, it wasn’t easy to find clips with language clean enough to keep WordPress from shutting down my blog over decency issues!
Diminution: Reduces the size of something in order to make it appear ridiculous or that it be examined closely and have its faults seen close up. Honestly, no one today does this better than Jon Stewart, in my opinion.
Inflation: A common delivery of satire is to exaggerate real-life situations to such a degree that they become ridiculous and flaws and faults are highlighted. Stephen Colbert is a master at this. (I can’t get this non-youtube video to load so here’s the link)

Fatigued Muse
I’m distracted today so I’ll pick up on Satire tomorrow. Days of rain have seeped into my joints and I ache from head to toe. Yeah, that’s just my life. It’s been this way for nearly 41 years. Mostly I think it away…well, not completely away. It’s always there. After so long I’m just used to the pain so mostly ignore it.
The thing that gets me the most about rheumatoid arthritis is the fatigue. Good lord. There are days where I’m just. so. tired. I could wake up after a full night’s sleep, drink a cup of coffee, and go back to bed. Today is one of those days. There’s nothing to do but see to my pets then surrender to a down blanket. Blah.
Until tomorrow, I have many posts on my other blogs. Find the links on this links page above.

Blame it on Ben
It’s time to set our clocks again. Growing up in Chicago where vernacular speech is rife with curious liberty taking, I went my merry way with the understanding this bi-annual clock reset was called Daylight Savings Time. Many many years ago, while writing The History of lamps and Lighting in America for a living history project I was working on, I discovered I’d had the name wrong for decades. The official spelling is actually Daylight Saving Time, not Savings Time. Wow, don’t you just hate feeling dumb? In this case Saving is a participle because it modifies Time and informs us of its nature — the activity of saving daylight.
Who started all this stuff that’s had Chicagoans saying the name wrong for 180 years and causing this city-dweller turned country émigré to feel like a dummy? Ben Franklin.
While visiting Paris in 1784, Ben wrote an essay entitled An Economical Project — just one of many of his discourses on thrift. Remember, he’s the penny saved is a penny earned guy. In this essay he was talking about conserving candles by setting the clocks in favor of natural daylight. It all came about after an experience he had one particular morning. You see, most Parisians of his acquaintance didn’t rise before noon. They were hard partyers who started their soirees late and went to bed just before dawn.
Apparently, one such morning he woke hours ahead of time and for a moment was confused by the light of pre-dawn in his room. Yes this is an actual account. I guess gentlemen who normally rise at noon might be thrown off by the sunrise. Here’s the story in his words:
“I looked at my watch, which goes very well, and found that it was but six o clock; and still thinking it something extraordinary that the sun should rise so early, I looked into the almanac, where I found it to be the hour given for his rising on that day. I looked forward too, and found he was to rise still earlier every day towards the end of June; and that no time during the year he retarded his rising so long as till eight o clock. Your readers, who with me have never seen any sign of sunshine before noon, and seldom regard the astronomical part of the almanac, will be as much astonished as I was, when they hear of his rising so early; and especially when I assure them, that he gives light as soon as he rises. I am convinced of this.”
Ever the master of wit, Franklin claimed that a noted philosopher assured him that he was mistaken. It was well known that there could be no light abroad at that hour. “His windows had not let the light in, but being open, had let the darkness out.” he later said, “This event has given rise in my mind to several serious and important reflections.”
Had he slept until noon, he would have missed six hours of daylight. And, as usual, he’d live six hours the following night by candlelight. It dawned on him just how expensive this lifestyle was. Ever frugal, he began calculating the cost of 100,000 Parisian families burning a pound of candles every two hours for an average of seven hours each evening between dusk and the late hour Parisians finally turned in. This is what he found:
“183 nights between 20 March and 20 September times 7 hours per night of candle usage equals 1,281 hours for a half year of candle usage. Multiplying by 100,000 families gives 128,100,000 hours by candlelight. Each candle requires half a pound of tallow and wax, thus a total of 64,050,000 pounds. At a price of thirty sols per pounds of tallow and wax (two hundred sols make one livre tournois), the total sum comes to 96,075,000 livre tournois. An immense sum that the city of Paris might save every year
Ben’s revelation returned with him to America and was written with witty humor in Poor Richard’s Almanac. And people listened. Even the Parisian lamp makers got on board. Soon everyone was talking about this novel idea.
In his autobiography, Franklin wrote of this thrifty concept in his travels to England:
“For in walking thro’ the Strand and Fleet Street one morning at seven o clock, I observed there was not one shop open tho it had been daylight and the sun up above. “three hours — the inhabitants of London choosing voluntarily to live much by candlelight and sleep by sunshine, and yet often complaining a little absurdly of the duty on candles and the high price of tallow.”
With rare exception, we’ve been following this idea since Benjamin Franklin thought it up. I too think it’s a good idea to limit the use of artificial light. If for no other reason than to conserve energy and protect the environment. There are people intentionally limiting their use of artificial light. I have a friend who does this and it appeals to me. Unfortunately, my husband is a lamp person. If there’s a light bulb anywhere, he’ll turn it on.
Here’s one man who tried a no electricity experiment for a month.
http://jdmoyer.com/2010/03/04/sleep-experiment-a-month-with-no-artificial-light/
As a writer who practically showers with my laptop, I’d find this very hard to do. On the other hand, I cut myself loose after dinner. It would be very easy to live by candlelight in the evenings.

To everything there is a season
Remember a few months ago how I complained about mosquitoes as the pest of the summer season? Well, I’ve entered the winter season early. In the last week, the cold weather has driven the country mice indoors, and I’m not talking their indoors, I mean MY indoors.
We have two kinds here — large sable deer mice and gray little house mice. I like mice. Outside. How can you not like them with their plump little bodies and their bright little eyes and cute whiskers? That’s my view of them in their habitat. But when they enter my habitat…well, let’s just say my opinion changes. Studies show mice travel miles to get back home. Capturing them live and releasing outside has them scurrying back indoors the instant their feet touch the ground. We’ll search out holes around pipes and stuff them with steel wool again.
I’ve good cause to hate mice in my farm house.
They chew on everything, they raid my pantry, leave their foul messes, and steal birdseed from my cockatiels. My husband has this weird flashlight-type thing with LED lights that spin. Would you believe the mouse or mice have taken all but one bulb off that flashlight? Why?? Are they Tom Thumb and Hunca Munca from Beatrix Potter’s Tale of Two Bad Mice? Are they part of the Teenie Weenies world from the old Sunday comics? Do they supply the Borrowers? Or are they relatives of Stewart Little? What the heck do mice do with LED lights??
That’s it. We’ve waged war this week. It’s a sad business but there’s nothing else we can do. It makes me long for a cat but we have allergies here. The dogs like to think they’re on the problem, but no. They’re freeloaders but don’t like to admit it.

Satire ~ Burlesque
As mentioned before, satire is an ancient practice considered to be the oldest and most trenchant way to observe society. People naturally want to poke fun. The Ancient Greeks and Romans took this fireside ribbing and formalized the delivery to make satire an art form. Today I’m examining burlesque. When I began this exposé I had no idea burlesque was a form of satire!
Burlesque has been around a while. It’s more than just a striptease too. In the 16oo-1700s it was divided into two classes: High Burlesque where inappropriate subject matter was dolled up and treated like it was literary gold. Sort of like Morgan Freeman and other actors reading 50 Shades of Gray aloud as though it were Shakespeare. (Yes you can find it on youtube. I won’t put it here.) Then we have Low Burlesque where a serious subject is treated to an irreverent, mocking style. Think of Monte Python and the Holy Grail. http://youtu.be/qyIZK7GWSPI
The Victorians here and abroad played with this type of satire in everything from carnival and circus shows to Can-Can. I suppose that’s how burlesque eventually became synonymous with striptease. In the last century coming out of Vaudeville, most strip shows were anchored by comedians such as Mae West, Abbott and Costello, W. C. Fields, Jackie Gleason, Danny Thomas, Al Jolson, Sid Caesar, Danny Kaye, and Red Skelton. These are just a few well-known names in comedy who started their careers in Burlesque. We also had famous dancers come out of those acts such as Gypsy Rose Lee, Blaze Starr, and Sally Rand.
When my dad was a young man of 20, he saw the incomparable burlesque show of Sally Rand the fan dancer when he went to the 1933 Century of Progress World’s Fair in Chicago.
Burlesque, who knew? It’s funny how things begin one way and turn into something else entirely.
No satire here tomorrow. Just weekend stuff.

Satire ~ Ironic Juxtaposition
If you’ve been to my blog over the past few days, you’ve been reading about Satire. This human expression of absurdity is considered an art form. Literature and drama are the main vehicles that get the message across, but we also see it in cartoons, caricatures, and comedy. Digging deeper into satire has uncovered many shades of nuance to it. Today I’m examining juxtaposition — specifically ironic juxtaposition.
It wasn’t easy but I managed to find a written example of ironic juxtaposition: if a guy says his important subjects in school are Calculus, Computer Science, Physics, and girl-watching, he’s removed some of the importance of the first three by listing the last.
We mainly recognize this form of satire when we actually see conflicting things set side by side. You’ll find it in cartoons such as Gary Larson’s Far Side. He often presents bizarre visuals like hippos wearing tap shoes, or ducks walking in a V formation rather than fly.
Here are a few ironic juxtaposition gems from around the web:

Tomorrow in satire ~ burlesque!

Satire ~ Sarcasm
Who knew Satire was such a vast human expression? I’ve been breaking it down by nuance and showing examples. Today I’m examining sarcasm in satire. There’s a LOT of it! Interesting to note: the root of the word sarcasm actually means “to strip off the flesh”. No kidding! Sarcasm is considered a form of irony. To learn more about irony and the many facets of satire, scroll down to my previous posts.
Who could forget this gem from Groucho Marx?
“I never forget a face, but in your case I’ll be glad to make an exception.”
Groucho had several hilarious movies and he was also known for his witty sarcasm. I think the greatest example of sarcastic satire is the Roast where the guest of honor is served dinner and teasing insults. I found two great examples of the Roast, one older and one from two years ago. The first is a clip of Groucho Marx at a roast for Johnny Carson.
In the next Ricky Gervais opens the 2011 Golden Globes
with an dash of British sarcasm.
Since I’ve uncovered more shades than I originally thought existed, I’m stretching satire out just a bit longer. Tomorrow in satire ~ juxtaposition.
