Satire ~ in Literature
I had a different day planned here but oh well, gotta roll with those punches.
Continuing on with my exposé on satire. I think I’ll be wrapping up by Thursday. Do scroll down to past posts and read the first installments.
Because there are so many facets to Satire, I’ve been breaking it down into nuance. Today I’m examining satire in literature — specifically from the mind of Samuel Clemens a.k.a. Mark Twain.
To people who study such things, there’s no doubt about it, American humorist Mark Twain was also a moralist. His literature is full of his precisely articulated anger and undeniable disillusionment over the happenings in his era. As an example, I offer actor Hal Holbrook’s spot-on impersonation. He perfectly brings some of Mark Twain’s thoughts to life. You tube has several clips of this accomplished actor having a go at Twain. For a larger sample of satire at work, I highly recommend watching them.
Here’s a collection of satirical pieces narrated by Mike Bennet.
Pour yourself a cup of tea and enjoy this very nice collection of stories.
Here’s a full Samuel Clemens’ biography done by the History Channel.

I had a devil of a time working with Blogger yesterday. I was supposed to be in a blog hop but I couldn’t access my dashboard to make my post in time. The blasted thing kept making me sign in over and over and still I got nowhere. Half a day late and no end in sight, there was nothing to do but cancel my participation. If you’ve gone to my satellite blog looking for the paranormal blog hop, my apologies.
As of this morning, I’m still on the Paranormal Hop list with nothing but an old Grouch Day post to show. I’ve moved the hop I was going to post here to that blog to fill the void. Some days just run smoother than others. Glitches are a huge pain in the butt, especially glitches when you have deadlines. http://calliopeswritingtablet.blogspot.com/
Though I’m no longer partaking, there are still great posts and prizes to be had on the Paranormal Hop. You can start at my author friend J.D. Faver’s blog and follow the list she has posted there. http://livingwiththemuse.blogspot.com/

Satire ~ Instrument of Change
My exposé on satire continues this week. I’ve posted things on the topic that are both interesting and funny. Do scroll down to past posts and read the first installments.
There are many facets to Satire. Today I’m examining satire as a social statement and instrument of change.
When I think of this sort of satire, my mind immediately goes to Garry Trudeau. He’s famous for charting and recording American folly through a comic strip called Doonesbury, and he‘s been at it since 1970.
In 1975, Garry Trudeau was the first comic strip artist ever to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize
for editorial cartooning. He was also a three-time Pulitzer Prize finalist. And that’s not all. He’s a huge advocate for service members who have served, or are currently serving, in Iraq and Afghanistan, along with their spouses, and caregivers. In recognition of his work regarding wounded soldiers, he was presented with the Commander’s Award for Public Service by the Department of Army, the Commander’s Award from Disabled American Veterans, the President’s Award for Excellence in the Arts from Vietnam Veterans of America, the Distinguished Public Service Award from the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and a special citation from the Vet Centers.
All this from an insightful satirical comic strip. Wow.
Learn more about this fascinating man and everything he’s up to these days.

Satire ~ Political pokings
Continuing on with Satire today. My exposé will end sometime next week. Do scroll down to past posts and read the first installments.
When I began this personal quest I didn’t realize there were so many facets to the topic. I became interested because literature often uses satire to show foolishness or vice. I admit I ‘m drawn to it because the late night comedians have had a field day with political satire in the past few weeks. Under the umbrella of free speech and the cloak of their profession, they reach high in their jibs and jabs without repercussion here and elsewhere in the western world. A comedian in the Middle East was recently jailed and later released for his irreverent satire. A comedian in North Korea was recently sent to a hard labor camp. It’s sad when people and nations take themselves so seriously they can’t laugh without fear of repercussion. Life can be absurd at times.
One very vocal use of satire is done on the political stage. Interesting to note, the intelligent mocking of ridiculous politicians isn’t a modern art form. (Though we do possess an unusual abundance to work with). William Shakespeare often poked political fun in his plays. When he said “Something’s rotten in the state of Denmark” the statement had broader meaning than simply Hamlet’s story. He was referring to sinister dealings in politics. Dealings that although unseen, still obviously reeked.
Benjamin Franklin is credited for the first political cartoon in America. He was always using his wit to charm and disarm. I should devote a blog post to him sometime! Ben and his era may have had their absurdities back then, but I’ll wager it was nothing near what we have today. You’ll see a terrific array of political satire delivered through late night TV. Of all of these, I have to say no one does it better than Jon Stewart. It may offend the sensitive viewer. It just makes me laugh, and for that, I appreciate the man’s brilliance more.
Monday — satire as a social statement and instrument of change.

Satire ~ Dramatic Irony
I occasionally insert humor into my stories so I’ve been talking about Satire this week. Many mammals exhibit a sense of humor, and don’t you wonder why? I see it all the time with my dogs. They tease one another to encourage play. Studies show many animals laugh…or laugh in their own way, I suppose…through little sounds of satisfaction. Apparently you can really tell the difference in the primates. They hoot and grin. So do we.
So what exactly is humor for? Some researchers believe it’s part of the social bonding processes we humans have. Camaraderie gets built, efficient hunting follows, the species eats and survives. This makes sense.
As mentioned over the past two days, satire is an ancient practice considered by many as the most trenchant or keenest way to observe society. Humans find satire funny because we share the human condition. I don’t need to step on a rake or sit on a tack myself, but I might suppress a chuckle when The Three Stooges do it. Laughter is contagious too! See for yourself.
LOL So now that we’re both laughing and we don’t know why…
There are three main forms of irony found in Satire. Today is about Dramatic Irony – A form of satire understood by the audience but not grasped by the characters in the play. In the old I Love Lucy clip I’ve chosen, we know what this miracle elixir is going to taste like before Lucy does.
As an example of the humor I use in my writing, I offer a snippet from book1 in my saga The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo – a paranormal tale about an ancient Native American shaman trying to fit into the modern world.
Ash has a very interesting talent — the ability to shape-shift. Here, he feels altered, and assumes this sensation is caused by a magical drink — beer.
………………………………..
Ash felt odd. The sensation was not unlike the altered mental state brought about by the ordeals of his training, when his mind ventured in another world while his body stayed in this one. His earlier jumble of thoughts returned. It is the beer. The beer is bringing this sensation. It was only a guess but the odd feeling was intensifying since the last two glasses. Watching Livie drive away, he slid his hand down the front of his jeans to grip himself. Kissing her had made him hard and now he ached.
Knowing he had to resume his wolf form at Livie’s home, he took a deep breath and shifted, but his inebriated mind was not concentrating and he ended up with a raven’s head atop his man’s body. He tried again. Forgetting that he still wore clothes, he found himself a small bird, pinned and struggling under the heavy garments that had fallen to the ground in a heap. He shifted into a feathered snake before taking the form of a mouse and working his way out of a sleeve.
The movement caught the attention of an owl on its nightly hunting foray. Just as it was about to swoop low on silent wings, intent on nabbing the large field mouse, a naked man with a mouse tail and whiskers appeared. The owl, clearly startled, flew off into the night. Laughing, Ash raised his arms and yelled after it, “This is not your night, my brotherrrr!”
Tail and whiskers absorbed into his changing form and once again bare skin grew feathers. He shifted into a raven — a six-foot-tall raven. Laughing at himself, he made his body small and flew fast to Livie’s home, albeit not in a straight line.

Satire ~ Verbal Irony
As mentioned yesterday, satire is an ancient practice considered by many as the keenest way to observe society. Humans find satire funny. How often do good friends tease one another and poke fun? For the next several posts, I’m taking a look at satire’s ironic side which pokes fun through opposites.
There are three main forms of irony found in Satire. Today is about Verbal Irony – that is, what you mean is different from what you say.
Say your bank statement comes and you see an accounting error has led to a few bounced checks. You might say, “That’s just great!” or “Oh that’s fabulous.“
You’ll often encounter verbal irony in late night comedians. It takes razor wit and depth of intelligence to pull off this type of satire. This was the stuff the court jesters did in the days of old.
I personally think the best satire today comes from Comedy Central. Jon Stewart and his writers are hysterical.
Here’s a cute example of Verbal Irony — a clip of Stephen Colbert’s genius:

Satire ~ Situational Irony
As promised, I’m taking a look at satire. I’ve found so many juicy tidbits, this exposé will run for a few posts.
Satire is an ancient practice viewed, by people who view such things, as the oldest and most trenchant way to observe society. Given people’s natural tendency to poke fun, I’m sure it was a common occurrence around the evening fire. It took the Ancient Greeks and Romans to formalized the delivery of satire and make it an art form. I’ve read various origins of the word satire — everything from a spin on those half goat/half men satyrs to the Latin lanx satura which literally means “a full dish of various fruits”. I can see both in the word origins, it’s all good.
Some cultures have perfected satire to the point of the humor being lost on most Americans. I happen to think British humor is hysterical.
This time around, I’m taking a look at the ironic side to satire which pokes fun through opposites. There are three main forms of irony found in Satire. I’ll begin with Situational irony – that is, comparing what is expected to happen with what actually happens.
I remember such a scene many years ago when dating the man destined to become my husband. We were visiting his parents house and in a corner of the back yard sat an old rusted push mower surrounded by grass that had grown in and around it. I expected him to say he needed to mow the grass for his parents. Instead, he pointed there and said, “I’ve waited all year to take that picture.” I found that hysterical. His wit was one of the reasons I married him. He still makes me laugh.
Here’s another cute example of Situational Irony:

Committed people can change the world
I’m drained. I had such an emotional day yesterday, and today I’ve a hellish headache, windburn, and a stuffy nose. My private life and my public author’s face are separate entities so I won’t go into too many details here. But it is worth mentioning in the abstract, just why I’m compelled to write this today, and why when I’m done, I’m not working on my novel. I’m going back to bed with a dose of antihistamines instead.
Twenty seven years ago, a small group of friends sat at my kitchen table and we devised a plan that, if all went well, would put a halt to an impending travesty with dire environmental consequences. We got other people on board with the idea. It was a gamble. It was expensive. It took years of our lives and was made possible by the added efforts of many. So many dear friends were made as we pooled our resources for a cause greater than ourselves. And it worked.
Twenty years ago this past Saturday, after the first round of good news for our gamble came to light, I was invited to take part in a ceremony of thanks. The man leading it was a Native American shaman and the most astute person I have ever had the honor of knowing. In that unique moment in time, he said to me “Spirit speaks in the voices available.”
I believe that.
The precious undertaking did what it was conceived to do. It put and end to a terrible short-sighted idea. It ran a good run, an awesome run, and this past weekend we put it to rest with honor and tears on the official 25th anniversary. The spirit of place gathered many voices together and together we spoke. So, as I’m tearing up again, I’ll close with this for it is one of the truest statements ever made:
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
~Margaret Mead.

Exquisite Quills blog ~ Set the Stage in Six!
You can tell a lot of story with a few well-chosen sentences. Today on my Exquisite Quills group blog, it’s Set the Stage in Six. Authors share snippets from their novels showing the lead-up to an important moment or describe the backdrop to the scene…and it’s all done in just six sentences. >>Promo Opportunity, come leave your six<< http://exquisitequills.blogspot.com/
I found a short story once, an extremely short story of six words, and it tickled my imagination. I wish I could remember it…Anyway, you really can tell an entire story in six words. Think of it as “sound bite” storytelling. Here’s an example:
She loved cigarettes… more than life…
~Maxwell
Whoever she was, she obviously had a killer smoking habit. It leads me to another form of storytelling — satire.
I had a morning conversation with my son, the other author in the family. We were discussing this idea. He threw a few authors my way — the satirists David Sedaris and David Rakoff. After seeing them at work through Youtube and NPR’s This American Life, I’ll add Jon Stewart to this short list. I’ll even add William Shakespeare. You must posses a depth of intellect to craft satire for it’s all about mocking social conventions. I think I’ll chew on this topic a little more this week.
