Here’s an intro to The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo ~ This story was inspired by an urban legend and the ancient Native American Mound Builders who once lived on the land we now known as Wisconsin. Take a peek at the first book in the series with the Look Inside feature on Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AFFFESI
Here’s the story
“Using traditional mythology and bringing it into the present is definitely a technique that works very well with this book. Rose disarmingly and very skillfully melds past and present into a great story layered with characters and interrelationships that we want to know more about. I was bewitched!”

Here’s a bit more from Enchanted Skye ~ The story is woven around a legend and a family who, to this day, claims they carry Selkie blood. Take a peek at the Look Inside on Amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/Enchanted-Skye-ebook/dp/B00F0XLF5Q
Blurb:
Alexander MacCodrum belongs to a race of shape-shifting sea creatures living on Scotland’s Isle of Skye. When Jenna MacLeod unknowingly adds seven tears to the salt of
the sea, she accidentally unleashes an ancient charm that catches the transformed Selkie unawares. Under this binding spell, Alex must win Jenna’s heart, or the pain of unrequited love will drive him to take his own life. Unfortunately for Alex, Jenna hasn’t come to Skye looking for love and it could take the force of a hurricane to bring them together. But worse, Jenna’s violent ex-boyfriend has found her at last and Carl has made it perfectly clear – if he can’t have her, no one can.
Setting the Stage:
After encountering a beautiful woman scattering ashes in the tidal pool, Alex rushes home. He’s been away at sea for months and he knows if anyone has news of the lovely stranger at the lighthouse, it’ll likely be his sister Bea.
Snippet:
He hadn’t been home in a while because that was the way of it, the restlessness in his blood that was his birthright. The family lived between the worlds of sea and land. The first MacCodrum to take a Selkie to wife more than two thousand years ago stamped the gift of two worlds on their line and with it came the constant pull… the need to return to the water whether one got the shape-shifting gene or the fishing gene. His extended family came with both.
Like him, his brothers Lachlan and Gavin, their sister Beatrix and their father, all lived equally in the surf and in the town. They were Selkies, as were the rest of Clan MacCodrum spread over Scotland and the islands of the Hebrides. Save for seven shifters scattered through the larger extended family, his cousins were mostly fishermen, and all possessed a sea creature’s intuition when it came to finding the good haul. That his Irish mother carried the Roan gene, though wasn’t one herself, was the reason his portion of the family line had more shifters than not.
Doled out for the tourists, the local legends pointed fingers at their family’s romantic origins but the tales were no different than those about the bogie man, faerie folk or ghostly specters on the moors. No one took them seriously for all they were true. They’d go to the pub on occasion and if there were tourists a neighbor would rib them good-naturedly. The latest being, “Where ye hidin’ yer seal skin, Lachlan?” to which his eldest brother replied, “Now if I tell ye Ronnie Nash, and ye find it, I’ll have to wed ye! And man, yer not my type!”
The tourists loved it and the locals howled, and god love them, none saw the truth right before their eyes. That was another Selkie gift, the gift of glamour. You only saw what a Selkie wanted you to see.

Doh!
Ever on the hunt to find things that capture my fancy that I might blog about them, I’ve discovered there’s some auspicious event just about every day. September 16th is the day to recognize that most famous modeling compound – Play-Doh. Play-Doh is a clay/dough-like substance children have been digging their little paws into since 1956.
The stuff has curious beginnings and that’s why I’m blogging about it today. Back in the 1930’s, an Ohio soapmaker designed the stuff to clean grimy wallpaper. The cleaning compound consisted of flour, water, salt, boric acid, and mineral oil. Apparently it had a pleasant texture because it somehow wound up in a Cincinnati classroom where children used it as a modeling compound. The handwriting was now on the wall along with the grime. The cleaning product was reworked and marketed to Cincinnati schools in the mid-1950’s. Play-Doh’s rising star really took off in 1957 thanks to children’s television shows.
I remember playing with Play-Doh, though plasticine was always my clay of choice because your sculptures could have fine detail with it. I recall the old Play-Doh cans would be next to impossible to close after a while because the cardboard rim would collapse. That meant the next time you wanted to use it, it was a hard speckled blob in the can. And just like calamine lotion did for chickenpox, the scent of Play-Doh created an olfactory memory for me. It still smells the same.

Eccentric, Moi?
I’m taking a break from the many weekend mini hops I normally participate in. It’s a gloriously cool day and I have things to see to. My pneumonia is finally over and I can actually dust my house again. The doctor forbade me to clean anything that would stir dust into the air. Who’d ever think that was cause to cheer?
It should be ok now. Just in case, I’ll put fans in the windows blowing out and I’ll wear a particle mask. Not my ideal but I’ve had more than enough lung issues. Today is also the day I evict my spiders. I always leave my summer spiders in the corners. It drives my husband nuts. Hey, they provide a valuable service — mosquito control. This year has had more than the average cloud of those pesky things and I was glad for their help.
My husband has taken to comparing me to a crazy cat lady. LOL I have no cats. He’s referring to the fact writers often grow eccentric over time. I don’t call hosting spiders necessarily eccentric. Hmm…yeah, after reading it, I suppose it is!

Late Summer Palette
From my view on the hill, autumn is fast approaching. The leaves are just starting to look like they’ve served their purpose. I suspect they’re contemplating their fall to the ground in that most ancient of recycling programs. Soon the townspeople will be out in droves raking and piling. Odd, we never rake leaves around here yet every spring they’re gone. Should no burn ordinances block the rite, neighbors will light those piles and fill the air with redolent memories from my childhood.
I love fall. I love the cold-morning air that makes me want to linger outside and listen to the flocks of birds gathering in the trees to whisper southern travel plans to one another. The gold finches have come for the thistle down just starting to fluff. This will pad their nests in late summer.
It’s wonderfully cold this morning — a temporary chill until autumn finally arrives. The days are still warm on the downside of summer; downright hot like earlier this week with 100º days. Last night all the windows were open to the coolness. Today my allergy eyes itch like crazy but the house is delightfully chilly.
I’m surrounded by native prairie. You can always tell exactly where you are in the season by the height and color of the flowers around here. We’re at the mid-point of the yellow phase, and many of the plants are taller than my 5’6″ frame. Yellows of all kinds from false sunflowers, to coneflowers, to goldenrods are everywhere and the bees love it. You know they do when you walk by a patch of flowers and every bloom has a bee mumbling away. They don’t say buzzz. They say Mmmm. Soon the New England asters will bloom. I adore that indescribable color blue on those delicate clumps — sort of a purple-blue.
The prairie grasses are growing tall and getting seed-heavy. My husband always brings in a few stalks of Indian grass for me to decorate with. I’ll hang them up to dry and put them out in October. And every year when I do, he tells me they’re the color of my hair. He insists my red hair gets darker in the fall. I’ve heard other people say the same thing. I can’t imagine why that would be. Maybe it’s just the contrast of the brighter reds and oranges in the autumn flowers and leaves? Perhaps the angle of the sun? One day soon, everyone else will see snowy white and he’ll be the only one seeing my red hair changing with the seasons. And that will be just fine with me.

If it ain’t broke…
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it
I have a peeve. The phrase If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, is often attributed to someone in President Jimmy Carter’s administration. I forget the guy’s name. It means exactly what is says. This peeve of mine has to do with this very thing. Computer moguls rush to get the latest versions out there in a backdoor form of planned obsolescence. Tell me what WindowsVista and Windows7 has ever had over the near perfect WindowsXP. I felt the same about all the Windows iterations after Windows98…that is until XP came out.
Back in the old days, those wonderful WindowsXP days, pc owners knew what was what on their computers. You could find things. You had control. You could pick and choose what you wanted updated. My not-that-old laptop sports the Windows7 operating system. Bah! Every once in a while I’ll power down the laptop and get the message that I can’t shut down, my updates are in progress. Arghh.. that means I wait, and wait, and wait. I have to. With my variable electricity here on my hill at the very the end of the electric line, I don’t dare go to bed without unplugging my computer. It’s absolutely necessary. I can’t tell you how many electronics and appliances of all sizes I’ve replaced through the years, including several $100 surge protectors that get reduced to pricey powerstrips with one good surge.
Once a transformer blew at the end of my road and the surge hit the house. It made such a noise I thought a car had slammed into the house! That was only part of it. My house filled with white smoky ozone and I ran from room to room sniffing wall outlets trying to determine if I had a fire in the walls. Scarey. Luckily no fire, but we lost 2/3 of our electronics — TV, 2 computers, refrigerator, microwave, every clock, DVD player, and more. What didn’t die outright that day, died slowly over the next two months. This included a lot of $18 each (at the time) energy-efficient light bulbs. Lightning striking nearby has also taken a toll through the years. Our insurance man once asked if we were selling goods on the side, they’d replaced so many damaged things. I think he was joking. lol
So, like anyone fed up with variable power from an electric company I pay monthly, I called after the big event. I was told they do pay out for liability, but they do not pay for storm damage. I said the sky was blue when the transformer blew up and we hadn’t had rain in a month. She said it was an “act of god”. I said “what??” She said, “a storm had damaged the lines months ago.” I said, “well isn’t that convenient when acts of god stretch on indefinitely? Do you ever pay for a customer’s damage, or is all of it considered divine acts?” She didn’t answer and I didn’t go further. No point in killing the messenger.
I started my post with I have a peeve. It appears I actually have several!
Anyway, like I mentioned above, my laptop sports the Windows7 operating system and it does its own updates. Now I suppose the “off switch” is here somewhere but I can’t find it. Last night’s unwanted updates did something they have never done before. They got rid of ALL of my documents. Every. Single. One. Can you imagine an author discovering that? Of course I back up major files by sending to the cloud, but lesser, but no less important, files were inaccessible to me. I felt like I’d just been kicked in the head.
In misery, I went to bed sniffling in my hopelessness and told my sleepy husband about it. He was only half awake but assured me we’d fix it somehow. I couldn’t see how. To me this was a work disaster. I know about work disasters. After all, I have years of stories I’ve written, unfinished projects, and pictures I love, trapped in a dead terabyte drive. So this morning, he found the system restore and we reverted my computer to the day before yesterday. My files are back. My Microsoft Office 2010 has issues. Until someone who knows more than I can assess, it looks like I’ll have to replace it. I dislike dealing with Microsoft and their high-priced single-user software. We have 5 computers in my home — 4 laptops and a desktop. If I buy software, I should be able to install on each one.
Ugh. One more peeve to the peeve pile.
۞>>>>۞<<<<۞>>>>۞<<<<۞
On to happier news…
I’ve completed my Enchanted Skye book trailer. It played fine on my laptop yesterday, but I see a glitch at the very end when it plays on youtube. I’ve advertised with it this week so no fixing and replacing until next week. What do you think?

Hump Day Happenings, a New Novel, a Smile, & more…
Some say the term Hump Day was coined in 1965. In Frederic G. Cassidy’s Dictionary of American Regional English, Volume I, he says Hump Day was used by counselors at summer camp to mean Wednesday. I lived and worked at a summer camp and yes, we said that on Wednesdays. I don’t know about it being coined there. I’ve found other references that say it goes back to the 1940′s. No citations though. No matter where this term came from, it’s the official half-way mark in the workweek and the weekend is on the other side of that little hill.
I saw this the other day and thought it was funny.
Alas, I get no remuneration from Geico.
