Sneak Peek Sunday!

Sneak Peek Sunday Banner It’s Sneak Peek Sunday!
Today I’m offering another 6 paragraphs from my unusual, soon-to-be released New Adult love story – Enchanted Skye

Blurb:

Alexander MacCodrum belongs to a race of shape-shifting sea creatures living on Scotland’s Isle of Skye. When Jenna MacLeod unknowingly adds seven tears to the salt of the sea, she accidentally unleashes an ancient charm that catches the transformed Selkie unawares. Under this binding spell, Alex must win Jenna’s heart, or the pain of unrequited love will drive him to take his own life. Unfortunately for Alex, Jenna hasn’t come to Skye looking for love and it will take the force Enchanted Skyeof a hurricane to bring them together. But worse, Jenna’s violent ex-boyfriend has found her at last and Carl has made it perfectly clear – if he can’t have her, no one can.

The Peek:

The image of Jenna lying back on his bed invitingly had burned into Alex’s mind. The change in her that morning was stark. He drew a deep breath and let it out slowly. That she ran to her room the instant her feet touched the ground spoke volumes. It was the scotch that made her want him last night.

Joining the others in the kitchen, he went straight to the coffee pot. The moment he saw Jenna at the table, that feeling from yesterday returned. She wouldn’t even look up from her cup to acknowledge she saw him there. How was it he felt so drawn to a woman he’d just met, a woman shunning him. Yes, the scotch was behind it. Her avoidance left him feeling very unsettled. That odd ache in his chest returned, and this time it came with a weird panicky edge.

As no formal introductions had been made, Bea said, “Jenna, I’d like to introduce you to my brothers. Lachlan the eldest, Alex, you’ve met, and Gavin.” To them she said, “This is Angus MacLeod’s grandniece, Jenna.”

“Pleased to meet ye, Jenna.” Lachlan held out a large warm hand. Gavin did the same. The brothers then tied to nudge one another out of the way. Unable to choose which man’s thrusting hand to shake first she laughed and shook both hands at once.

Alex smiled and held his out hand. “Alexander MacCodrum. I’m pleased to make your acquaintance, Jenna MacLeod.”

Jenna’s cheeks pinkened when she hesitated to take his hand. She met his eyes only briefly when she did. When he didn’t release her quickly, she pulled it away.

Sweet Saturday Samples

sweetI’m taking part in the Sweet Saturday Samples mini hop over on the Sweet Saturday Samples blog. #SweetSat Follow this link to the other participating authors. http://sweetsatsample.wordpress.com/

Today I’m offering up another sample from my soon-to-be-released Enchanted Skye

Blurb: Enchanted Skye

Alexander MacCodrum belongs to a race of shape-shifting sea creatures living on Scotland’s Isle of Skye. When Jenna MacLeod unknowingly adds seven tears to the salt of the sea, she accidentally unleashes an ancient charm that catches the transformed Selkie unawares. Under this binding spell, Alex must win Jenna’s heart, or the pain of unrequited love will drive him to take his own life. Unfortunately for Alex, Jenna hasn’t come to Skye looking for love and it will take the force of a hurricane to bring them together. But worse, Jenna’s violent ex-boyfriend has found her at last and Carl has made it perfectly clear – if he can’t have her, no one can.

Setting the Stage:

Beatrix, Lachlan, and Gavin MacCodrum discuss their brother Alex’s odd behavior that morning. Jenna MacLeod is staying at their inn, and whatever occurred between her and their brother the night before has created a notable tension. In fact, Jenna is completely avoiding him, and that’s causing Alex to be anxious. His siblings see that as completely out of character. A terrible revelation is coming.

My Sample:

Changing the topic to Alex’s unusual interest in Jenna MacLeod, Bea told them how Alex was fishing for information yesterday when he came home from the sea. “He saw her scattering the ashes when he was out sunning on the rocks. I think he was moved by her tears.”

“What makes ye say that?” Lachlan asked sharply.

“What, that she was keening at the water’s edge? Makes sense no? It was her grandmother’s ashes they were sprinkling on the water and…” Eyes growing large, Bea gasped and put her hand to her mouth. “Oh my lord! Ye don’t think…”

Lachlan frowned. “It wouldn’t be the first MacCodrum caught that way.”

Gavin shook his head, “What are ye both going on about?”

“The legend Gavin. The Legend of the Seven Tears.” Bea explained.

“No.” Gavin’s shoulders dropped. That kind of charmed longing would eat Alex alive if Jenna didn’t return the sentiment. “But you’re right! It’s happening now. I’ve never seen him like he was this morning. His glamor was coming’ on and he wasn’t even fighting it, did ye see? I’ve never seen him in such a state around a woman before.”

“That’s true. I nudged him under the table so he could stop before Jenna saw the change.” The elder warned them both, “Listen, don’t ye even think about telling him…”

Concerned for Alex, Gavin said, “But she’s avoiding him Lachlan, in the long run it will break his heart.”

Lachlan frowned. It would indeed. This was auld magic. So auld it was the stuff of fairy tales. If Jenna MacLeod cried seven tears into the sea with Alex nearby, it was a binding contract of love or obsession – lasting love if he could win her heart, obsession and eventual suicide if he couldn’t. “If he doesn’t figure out a way to win her over, it will kill him.” Lachlan’s frown deepened. “And damn it all, there’s nothing the three of us can do about it.”

Not one to shirk from intrigue, Beatrix MacCodrum tapped a finger to her chin. “Maybe there is.”

Today I’m offering 6 paragraphs from my unusual, soon-to-be released New Adult love story -  Enchanted Skye

Enchanted SkyeBlurb:

When Jenna MacLeod unknowingly adds seven tears to the salt of the sea, she accidentally unleashes an ancient charm that catches the transformed Selkie unawares. Under this binding spell, Alex must win Jenna’s heart, or the pain of unrequited love will drive him to take his own life. But worse, Jenna’s violent ex-boyfriend has found her at last and Carl has made it perfectly clear – if he can’t have her, no one can.

The Peek:

Emotionally drained from her grandmother’s funeral and physically exhausted from walking to the Scottish inn in the icy rain after her car breaks down, Jenna wanted nothing more than a hot bath, a hot meal, and a bed. Impatient for all three, her situation quickly degrades into a comedy of errors and she finds herself locked in a room with a stranger. In this scene, she’s called for help. She has no idea the voices on the other side of the door are Alex’s brothers and believes Alex is just an obnoxious guest.

A surprised male voice came from the other side. “How can I help ye?”

Jenna called through the doorjamb, “Please get the owner. Please go and get Beatrix MacCodrum. I’m stuck in here!” There were two men in the hall now and both were chuckling. “This isn’t funny! Please bring the owner, bring Bea!” The laughter deepened and was followed by indistinct conversation. “Oh! They’re laughing!” Furious, she turned to the smiling man behind her. “The rude…they’re no doubt friends of yours.”

He raised a brow at her. “Love, it was you who came into my room and helped yourself to my shirt. And it was you who broke my door, and you who are currently giving me hell for your mistake. Perhaps you’re confused about what constitutes ill manners.”

Her lips pressed together in an angry line. Turning back to the door, she pounded some more.

Alex stared dumbly, not sure what to do. That odd feeling had intensified now that he’d actually touched her. For all her spit and fire, Jenna MacLeod was certainly a lovely creature. In fact, spit and fire added to her beauty. She’d be even more furious had she realized the flannel shirt didn’t cover her cute bum.

Sweet Saturday Samples

sweetI’m taking part in the Sweet Saturday Samples mini hop over on the Sweet Saturday Samples blog. #SweetSat Follow this link to the other participating authors. http://sweetsatsample.wordpress.com/

Today I’m offering up a sample from my soon-to-be-released Enchanted Skye

Enchanted SkyeBlurb:

Alexander MacCodrum belongs to a race of shape-shifting sea creatures living on Scotland’s Isle of Skye. When Jenna MacLeod unknowingly adds seven tears to the salt of the sea, she accidentally unleashes an ancient charm that catches the transformed Selkie unawares. Under this binding spell, Alex must win Jenna’s heart, or the pain of unrequited love will drive him to take his own life. But worse, Jenna’s violent ex-boyfriend has found her at last and Carl has made it perfectly clear – if he can’t have her, no one can.

Setting the Stage

Jenna MacLeod travels to the Isle of Skye to scatter her grandmother’s ashes. Mourning at the water’s edge, she unknowingly revives an ancient charm with her tears and catches the Selkie Alex MacCodrum as he swims nearby.

My Sample

He watched with mild interest from the rocks. It wasn’t until Angus and the reverend walked back to the house that his interest got the better of him. He scooted a little closer and lifted his head to get a better view. He didn’t recognize this young woman on the land but watched her kneel before the pool. Her dark sable hair covered her face as she keened and for some reason he was compelled to go to her side. He slid into the water to investigate and the closer he drew, the stranger he felt.

Only feet away now, he blinked the saltwater from his eyes and watched her a while. The wind whipped at her hair and the sea mist clung to her clothing as she hugged an urn tightly to her chest. He knew what he was seeing then. They’d scattered ashes on the water. He considered her. Who was this woman to Angus MacLeod? The woman must have felt his presence for she looked up from her grief. Meeting his eyes, she looked startled to see him so close. She rose slowly and backed away.

His heart ached to watch her go and he found the feeling both perplexing and extraordinary. Then and there he knew he had to meet her. Taking a breath, he plunged under the water and swam to the far side of the cliff where the sea cave sat undetected. On dry land now, inside the dark chamber, he peeled away his waterskin. And where flippers were a moment before, a man’s arms and legs appeared. Shaking out his spotted skin with a snap, he rolled it into a tight bundle and headed toward the passage.

Hump Day Happenings

FREE today — a chapter sampling of all of my novels. Get yours! http://www.amazon.com/Love-Waits-Unexpected-Places-ebook/dp/B00DIKHDDQ

I’m still slogging through health issues…nothing like seasonal allergies to kick you when you’re down. They add that extra little je ne sais qua to my already compromised lungs. bleh. It all has to end eventually. Or I will!

Needing to get back on track, I took a break from the mini hops, put my runny nose to the grindstone, and no excuses finally got that 2 1/2 year book done. I literally rewrote it.  It’s off to my editor now and I’m hoping when it comes back, it does so with few issues. Out of sight, out of mind. I’ve since moved on to my last tale before tackling my magnum opus.  Enchanted Skye really is a charming story. No pun intended.

I hired the talented Su Halfwerk for the new cover. She made an amazing cover for another author I know and I wanted this one to appeal to a younger reader. I’m offering Enchanted Skye in the new genre of New Adult. Here’s the paperback cover flattened out. I think it’s cute.

Sneak Peek Sunday!

Sneak Peek Sunday Banner  It’s Sneak Peek Sunday!
Today I’m offering a bit from my unusual, soon-to-be released The Changeling
Setting the stage: In a sad turn of events three newborn babies are set on a course unknown. One was taken and a changeling set in his place. The last was stillborn. And there’s one more desperate turn of events to come…

She uncovered the bundle in her arms, and looking down, she smiled. “He’s a handsome laddie, don’t ye think. I’m no expert mind, but Agnes and I both suspect the babe is of mixed race. His little ears…”

Moving to her side, Osgood broke into a smile of his own. The little bundled boy was sleeping. He ran a gentle fingertip over the small, slightly pointed, ear. “Yes, he very well could be. And yes, he’s a handsome little man – dark like Master Evan was. May his soul in heaven forgive us.”

The housekeeper put a reassuring hand on the head butler’s arm. “He wouldn’t want her ladyship’s heart broken more than it already is. You know how he loved her.”

“I do. As I see it Fanny, the baker’s child is no more – taken away to some faery hill no doubt, never to be seen again, if the old stories are true. This little boy did not belong with the Benton family anyway. He’s black-haired, for one. He’d grow being different, maybe disliked or mistrusted, even despised by his father as another man’s bastard. You know how people are when they feel something isn’t quite right. The child would suffer for a situation completely out of his control. It harms no one that he be raised a Pendry.”

She nodded. “Yes, you’re right Mr. Osgood. If nothing else, this is the better life of the two.”

“It most certainly is. He’ll be the 10th Earl of Pendry. The family will continue because of him.” To the babe, Osgood whispered, “Shall we meet your mummy little sir?”

Sweet Saturday Samples

sweetI’m taking part in the Sweet Saturday Samples mini hop over on the Sweet Saturday Samples blog. #SweetSat Follow this link to the other participating authors. http://sweetsatsample.wordpress.com/

Today I’m offering up a sample from Dreamscape. Written in homage to Agatha Christie, Dreamscape is a haunting, a murder, a thriller, a mystery, a time travel of sorts, and a love story that transcends time. Above all, this sensual tale is a reader’s Easter egg hunt in the truest sense. Not everything is as it appears. Peppered throughout are little clues suggesting a story running behind the scenes. Finding them isn’t necessary to the telling of the tale, just one of the fun twists I like to insert into my writing. Can you find them all before the story ends? But more importantly, can a ghost find love among the living?

Setting the Stage:

Lanie is starting to suspect the urban legends about her house being haunted are true. For years she’s been dreaming of this old house and the inhabitants of 120 years before. Lately her dreams have taken on a realistic quality. She has no idea the ghost of Jason Bowen has been reliving his life through her dreams. In this scene, a strong summer storm is on the way and Lainie is rushing through her old house closing windows. At the very top cupola, she encounters a ghost.

My Sample

By the time she made it to the small, octagonal tower room suddenly the sky broke loose and hail pummeled the copper roof in a deafening roar. Taken by surprise, she ducked with her arms protectively over her head.

The elemental scene captured Lanie’s imagination. Four flights up, it was as if she were inside the belly of the storm feeling at once fascinated and fearful. Lightning flashed all around her, and the heavy, rain-struck glass and copper sheeting made a sound reminiscent of the roar of Niagara Falls she’d heard on vacation as a teen.

A thought came to her then. What if the lightning rods weren’t in good working order? Thinking it best to leave her lofty crow’s nest and head to a safer level of the house, she turned to leave and saw a man standing there.

“It’s you,” she whispered awestruck.

Jason nodded in the flickering light.

“I can see you.”

He smiled.

Lanie swayed on her feet, feeling lightheaded.

Jason rushed forward to catch her.

Lanie’s eyes grew huge as she said in awe, “I can feel you.” With that she promptly fainted and fell headlong into his arms.

Here’s the story

“Humor and sensuality shine through in this story.” “Lush and lyrical describe the prose — hot and sumptuous the love scenes.” “While you’re reading Dreamscape, you’ll come up with happily ever after theories. You’ll desperately want to so these two people can triumph over death. My advice? Just read and enjoy the ride to the end. I had my thoughts, and they were wrong. The real ending is a wonderful surprise. Just let it be, and live in the Dreamscape.”

~ Author Jane Leopold Quinn

Day 4 of the 10-Day Writing Challenge

10-day challengeIt’s Day4 of the 10-Day Writing Challenge. Today’s task: Offer 3-5 books on writing. I’ll say upfront I’m failing this particular task because this is a hard one. The only sort of related to writing books I  read are marketing guides or how-to’s as in, how to build a website or how to use Twitter.

Most of my creative reference comes from encyclopedias and hunting down topics online. I own one writing book because it was recommended to me by another author early on. I admit I’ve yet to read it. It’s the page-heavy  Chicago Manual of Style.

July 21, 2013

So so Busy

bee1Wow was that a whirlwind weekend! Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, this humble little bog was absolutely packed with stuff. It was just one of those all events line up on one particular weekend, weekends.

1. I was in the Hot Summer Romance Giveaway hop. The event is closed, or will be at midnight. Scroll down if you still want to enter. Later this week, I’ll wade through my comments and pick a winner for reader’s choice of any of my novels. I’ll contact you. I wish you all the best of luck for the grand prizes and hope you find my novel entertaining too.  Thank you for playing along. You can Look Inside all of my novels to get a teaser on Amazon. If you’d like to sample my works, Amazon has an ebook sampling of first chapters. I tried to make it free but they were allowing that. It’s 99¢. That was the best they’d do for me, though I did try. http://www.amazon.com/Love-Waits-Unexpected-Places-ebook/dp/B00DIKHDDQ

2. On my 1st satellite blog I participated in the Christmas in July hop.  My full year of blog hopping research is coming to a close. I have just a few left. Sometime in December, I’ll post my findings. I’ve been in some great ones, some very odd ones, and some real duds. I won’t say which because all these things take effort and hats of to anyone wanting to put effort in. Of all the hops I’ve done, I can count those I’d do again on six fingers. Again, I’ll post my findings with the last one at the end of the year.

3. Saturday and Sunday saw me doing back-to-back mini hops on three satellite blogs. My Sexy Saturday, The Weekend Writing Warriors, Sexy Snippets, Sneak Peek Sunday, and The Sweet Saturday Samples. I also did two on Wednesday but I’ll mention those another time. I really enjoy those 1-day hops and everyone commenting always has some nice and encouraging things to say.  I try to visit the participants too, but this weekend was nuts. Last week there were a lot of great teasers offered. I think creating satellite blogs with the same theme running between them was a very good idea. It gives me versatility. If you’d like to join those 1-day minis, scroll back here and click the active links to go sign up. Then check the links tab above and check out my satellite blogs. Most of these events will be ready for sign-up by mid-week.

4. I had a guest blog post up on author Toni Sweeney’s blog. I’m talking about art, Leonardo da Vinci, and how such things inspire me. It’ll be up all week. Do say hi if you stop. I’ll be on and off to answer questions. http://www.tonivsweeney.com/tvsweeney@tonivsweeney.com/Blog/Entries/2013/7/18_Loving_Leonardo_and_After.html

5. The Exquisite Quills yahoo group is going strong. I’m very happy with it. We have a wonderful bunch of members who offer suggestions based upon their various experiences, and we talk about a lot of different things. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ExquisiteQuills/

6. I participated in a cute little event called The Darwin Murders over on Facebook (did I say how much I dislike FB?). I submitted Ester’s Bees to show my mind can be as twisted as the next author’s mind. I invite you to see it before they take it down. https://www.facebook.com/events/137774169753258/ Hopefully, my mini crime will be selected for an anthology. I was in the last event with a very last minute entry. My story made it in the Bump Off Your Enemies anthology. http://www.amazon.com/Bump-Off-Your-Enemies-ebook/dp/B00CJWAVAQ

7. Very last minute, I got involved in the 10-Day Writing Blogger Challenge. I love challenges. Already this event has helped me create a nice blurb for my work in progress. Many authors hate blurbs. I don’t, but they’re hard for me. I think in big pictures. You can scroll back to see my offerings for day 1 and 2.

It’s Day3 of the 10-Day Writing Challenge. Today’s task: Offer my bio.

10-day challenge About Rose -

I live with my family and small menagerie amid oak groves and prairie in the rolling glacial hills of the upper mid-west. In this chapter of my life, I’m a multi-published author. My active imagination compels me to write everything from children’s stories to historical nonfiction.

I love descriptive words and choose them as carefully as an artist might choose a color. My detail-rich romances are happily ever after love stories colored in many shades. Readers will find my compelling heroes and heroines easy to fall in love with, and my villains…well, I won’t give too much away.

As a student of the human condition, I like to play with symbolism and metaphor dealing with core issues related to being human. Readers will find insights into the ongoing search for the ultimate meaning of existence tucked into my stories. Believing we are all on the same journey, I hope they strike a personal chord when discovered. I so love when readers say they’ve found something. I’d like people to feel my stories were written just for them, for that’s the truth. These hidden insights are my gift to my readers.

When not writing, I gather with friends for drumming, poetry, Reiki, and great discussions. You’ll also find me tirelessly dogged by my furry companions. Like right now…

What’s next? I’m closing in on Enchanted Skye. This poor story had so many starts and stops for various reasons, health and otherwise, I’ve completely rewritten it for continuity’s sake.  I think readers will find it charming. I do, and if I can please this hard-to-please reader, others just might like it too. Because I plan to hit the bricks with this story this week to get it done by the end of the month, this blog will go quiet for a few days unless writer’s block grabs me by the throat again.

If you’ve never been here before, I invite you to poke through my links in the top tabs. My book trailers are there too.
