Flocking up
I may have mentioned earlier that nearly a dozen authors in my Exquisite Quills group are working on a joint venture — a Holiday Anthology.
I noticed last year that holiday stories have a huge following. I’ve too many irons in the fire right now to do more than a short story myself, so I thought.. wouldn’t it be nice to flock up and do a group project? Flocking…I think I’ve heard too many geese flying overhead today. lol
I pitched the idea, it was well received, and so we go. Our stories go from 500 – 2000 words and are all-holiday themed, that is, all holidays occurring from the day after Thanksgiving to New Years day.
Super-creative Carey Abbott volunteered her talents for this great winter cover. Others are willing to edit. Someone else is helping with the publishing. We’ll offer it for free on any and all channels and see what comes back. If nothing else, we’ll warm some hearts. My story actually made me cry. And I wrote it! I wove the fiction around the facts, just like I do for all of my stories. The facts involved are near and dear to my heart because they concern the little old house I worked on 2 days a week for 10 years and helped restore. I’ll explain more when the book is released.
If all goes well, the Exquisite Quills Holiday Anthology should be in print by November 1st. I’ll keep you posted.

Sneak Peek Sunday!
It’s
Sneak Peek Sunday!
Today I’m offering another 6 paragraphs from my newest Enchanted Skye.
Available now in ebook and paperback.
Setting the Stage:
After an awkward and scotched-blurred night trapped in his bedroom, Jenna and Alex share a cup of tea while she waits for her car and the strain between them grows. Alex suddenly finds himself with insight and attempts to ease her mind.
The Peek:
That odd sensation settled in Alex’s chest again as if his heart had an extra beat. Though his back was to her, with his Selkie perception, he could feel Jenna’s eyes upon him. He tried to make small talk but she wasn’t saying more than a word or two at a time. It was obvious she wanted to get hell and away from him. Alone in the kitchen with no other person to move conversation along, the strain grew. It was all he could do to keep the glamor down. As soon as he felt it, he forced the survival instinct inside him where it belonged.
Struck suddenly by a rather sexually appraising thought projected from her mind, he nearly dropped the cup. This isn’t possible. Surely his want for her was playing tricks on him. Only his kind could communicate this way and Jenna MacLeod was no Selkie. Transformed Selkies had no voice by human standards, but they could speak to one another telepathically in both forms. The thought stopped him. Could she have Selkie or Roan blood? Uncle Angus was perceptive, but in all his life, his adopted uncle never gave any indication of telepathy. From the depths of memory, he recalled hearing there was Roan blood several generations back in the MacLeods. Had she this gift?
He opened his mind to hers. Yes, she was remembering last night, specifically watching him undress. She liked what she’d seen. The fact left him feeling prickly all over, as if each hair on his body were tense with excitement. When he turned to set the table, she’d already looked away. He focused his thoughts to her. Please Jenna, look at me. Talk to me.
Her eyes met his then went back to her cup. Out of the awkward silence, his heightened intuition brought a sudden insight. Jenna worried that something happened between them in her inebriated state. Ye don’t remember, do ye, love? He said, “Nothing happened, ye know.”
Her startled eyes rose to his again. The foggy part of her brain held intimate images of kissing him and more, as well as a recollection of wanting badly for him to make love to her. She let out a slow breath as her piecemeal memories stacked up beside his words.
Her look of relief made him slightly queasy. His earlier suspicion appeared to prove out — Jenna MacLeod only wanted him because she was under the influence of strong spirits. She wouldn’t have otherwise. Heart aching with the implication, he repeated, “Nothing happened between us. Ye only drank too much scotch, passed out, and I put ye to bed.”
Here’s the story
“Great read with one of Rose Anderson’s famous surprise twist endings. “

Walking and chewing gum?
Let me tell you, there are some days when there’s only so much inspired thought to go around. Words trickle in my work in progress, words trickle here in the blog (unless I go on a rant like I did a few days ago. Still furious over it.) I’ve been a daydreamer as far back as I can remember, so such trickles are really strange. My mind is a jumble of words and stories on any given day, it’s not like there’s nothing to work with. I’ve come to the conclusion it’s actually stringing them into coherent thought that bogs down the works.
Some days my fingers and and brain sync perfectly and fully-formed stories pour forth. I wrote the first draft of Loving Leonardo in exactly one week. Three days later, I sent a novel off to be edited. I wrote Hermes Online in three days. Pondering this, I’ve determined there are two reasons why they went so fast. First, both were fueled by emotion. The things that inspired them were heavy on my mind (I do my best writing when I’m outraged. LOL) Secondly, they’re both written in 1st person narrative. That’s simply me dressing in my character’s skin and allowing them to talk through me. Hmm…given the emotion of my outrage, maybe I’m allowing me to talk through them.
If I wasn’t afraid of redundancy, as in my voice/my words no matter the character, I’d write all my novels in 1st person. Worrying about head-hopping or point of view shifts kills my creative mojo. It’s that old adage “can’t walk and chew gum” applied to writing.
So far, I’ve had a moderately creative week. I’ve just completed my holiday anthology piece and I’m happy with it. I even made myself cry. lol I’ll explain that in detail on Monday.

Think About it Thursday!
Another week and another Think About it Thursday!
I’d like to see this concept eventually become a mini blog hop where the pondering is done on linked blogs and shared with any interested person stopping by. I haven’t yet figured how to go about doing that. I’ve done a lot of hops and they mostly use the set-up called Linky. That’ll take some studying on my part. I have a few author friends who use Linky. I may ask them how they did it for expedience’s sake and because there are days when, as much as I’d wish it otherwise, I over-think things like this and the simple how-to’s fly over my head.
For now, I’m just tossing the quote out there in my yahoo groups to encourage conversation. Here’s this weeks words to ponder:
The observer, when he seems to himself to be observing a stone, is really observing the effects of the stone upon himself.
~Bertrand Russell
Isn’t that the case? You can look at something, say a beautiful sunrise. You observe it, yes, but in actuality, there is more at play than meets the eye. In the act of observing you’re reacting. You’re noting how the sunrise captures your attention or inspires your appreciation or emotion. When I read this quote for the first time, my novel Loving Leonardo came to mind.
After half-listening to the mid-day news last summer, an idea for a story instantly materialized. I rarely watch TV, so generally pay it little mind. Strange but true, I actually leave it on for my daughter’s dog whom I dog sit for — a regular little couch-potato, that pup. Anyway, that day’s news was all about politics, specifically progressives and women’s issues. Suddenly Elenora Schwaab, Victorian suffragette, sprang fully formed from my head like Athena sprang from Zeus.
After a friend’s recent success with her novel, I decided to follow a writing trend to gauge it for myself. I jotted down the first few paragraphs with both hands upon the steering wheel. I could see where and when, whom and why, then something happened. It soon became clear I’d written a social statement. What’s more, it wrote itself. (I did mention in yesterday’s post that I am a woman of opinion) This story actually changed me inside. It’s not that the beliefs weren’t mine to begin with, that the heart knows no boundaries. I really believe you don’t pick who you fall in love with. Love happens to you. The story deepened my conviction that this is so.
Have you written a novel or created another work of art and found yourself altered by it?

The conduct of one hour
I set out to write a different post today but I just received an automated call telling me “death panels to kill the elderly were on the way now that ‘Obamacare’ was in place”. It asked me to press 1 to sign a petition against “this horrific fact”. That I am home working instead of outside the home is a fact of my personal health issues. Aside from people like me, I know who’s home answering these calls — the elderly. How would you like to receive an official-sounding call that says the government will soon be turning you into Soylent Green crackers?
My father was born in 1913. He would have been 100 this year. Upon settling his estate, my siblings and I discovered he’d been taken advantage of by a few companies that sent him more than one bill a month, sometimes three, which of course he paid all, and that left him short of funds for things like food. It makes me furious to think that elders, whose generation never considered scams of this magnitude, are falling prey to fear tactics like death panels.
Every once in a while I step back and try to see my country through another’s eyes. I don’t always agree with things happening here, and I’m the first to admit I often have strong opinions. However true this statement of mine is, I’m not about to make my blog a political platform. Perhaps one day, if I ever achieve a measure of celebrity, I’ll champion publicly the causes I’ve always championed in private. My bottom line has always been this: I’m a firm believer that our country is only as good as the least among us. I’m not alone in this. In fact, this belief goes back a very long way. Many have pondered and paraphrased this sentiment:
“You can judge a nation by the way it treats its most vulnerable citizens and animals.”
~Aristotle
Our society must make it right and possible for old people not to fear the young or be deserted by them, for the test of a civilization is the way that it cares for its helpless members.
~Pearl S. Buck
Character, in the long run, is the decisive factor in the life of an individual and of nations alike.
~Theodore Roosevelt,
A decent provision for the poor is the true test of civilization.
~Samuel Johnson
…the moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; those who are in the shadows of life; the sick, the needy and the handicapped.
~Hubert H. Humphrey
A nation’s greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members.
~ Mahatma Ghandi
Any society, any nation, is judged on the basis of how it treats its weakest members — the last, the least, the littlest.
~Cardinal Roger Mahony
The greatness of America is in how it treats its weakest members: the elderly, the infirm, the handicapped, the underprivileged, the unborn.
~Bill Federer
I’ve long been a student of the period in history known as The Enlightenment. It’s earliest roots belong to the ancients, for it was their philosophy the rest would stand upon. The Enlightenment began with knowledge shared by the post-bubonic plague tradesmen and the freeing of books from private church libraries. This was followed by the coming of the Gutenberg printing press that put knowledge into the hands of the common man. It expanded with global exploration that opened a world view to peoples living in harmony with their environment without the trappings of western civilization or church doctrine. It was contemplated by great philosophers who revisited the ideology of the ancients and applied those thoughts to their modern world. This coherent rationale percolated mind by mind and was served in the coffee salons of Europe and condensed by Thomas Paine and shortly after by Thomas Jefferson. The Articles of Confederation followed, and the Constitution of the United States came next — an unparalleled model of cooperation and compromise.
Never before was such a nation built from nothing but ideals. The plan wasn’t perfect, the document wasn’t without its flaws. But it was made to be fluid because the founders knew it would have to be for the nation to survive its own inevitable growth. This is why we have Amendments. The basic tenets, the very best attributes of the ancients, could be built upon as needed. The Republic of Rome and the Democracy of ancient Greece gave us a democratic republic by and for the people. The Constitution is a blueprint for “a shining city upon a golden hill” where fairness and equality are the order of the day. Where compassion is free to root and grow and everyone rises because we see our brother’s plight reflected in our eyes, and we do something about it.
I can’t express how annoyed I get to hear politician and pundit alike bandy the US Constitution about when it’s clear they have no understanding of the booklet they hold in their hand. Wouldn’t it be lovely if the showman’s mantra of I carry a copy of the Constitution with me at all times would end? If only these people truly understood the document they wield like a cudgel, then perhaps some good could be done in this nation, and in this world.
Last year I went to Washington DC for the first time in my life. I went feeling the country didn’t belong to me. I went feeling like the government wasn’t mine. Building by building I went. I walked more than six miles a day and absorbed the point of it all. It lead me to this one thought on current happenings. Our representatives are playing a dangerous game.
How so? When disasters happen on the homefront the National Guard comes to help. With a pandemic flu poised to strike, the CDC works to keep a finger on the pulse. Hazardous products get screened by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The Department of Agriculture and the FDA inspects our food for safety. Homeland Security watches out for acts of terrorism. WIC provides food support for women, infants, and children in need. All of these and more are down to skeleton crews. Tell me which of these things is not necessary? This isn’t about whether tours can take place at the White House or families can go on vacation to the National Parks. It’s far worse. And it’s wrong.
To the game-players in Washington, you are on notice. This is my country you’re playing with and I take voting very seriously. I assure you, I’ll remember.
I saw this today and I just want to say I’m embarrassed for my country.
In a world of information at your fingertips, ignorance is shameful
I’ll leave this rant with one more quote for our representatives in Washington:
The reputation of a thousand years may be determined by the conduct of one hour.
~ Japanese Proverb

Hazel on Fire
A Hazelnut I throw in the flame, to this nut I give my sweetheart’s name, If blazes the nut, so may thy passion grow, For t’was my nut that did so brightly glow.”
It’s said if you throw a hazelnut into a fire with the question of true love on your mind, how it burns indicates the depth of that love.
Cute huh? Hazels are a favorite of mine, nut and bush. The leaves are the first to change color in the fall and right now the hazels in my yard look like they’re on fire. You know how glowing embers are all colors of red, orange, and yellow at once? That’s what each leaf on our hazel bushes looks like — a bush of embers.
I like the nut too but I’ve never harvested ours. I like to leave them for the animals. Also
called Filberts, the hazelnut grows with a stiff and interesting covering that stands up like the decorative crest on a Roman centurion’s helmet. That style of helmet is called a korys and, not coincidentally, the Latin for hazel is Corylus.
I haven’t mentioned this before, but my husband is a biologist. He collects plant lore like I collect words. The hazels planted all around our house, were planted, in part, because of the lore. Hazels have interesting associations. Wisdom for one. The trees contain all knowledge, and their nuts contain all that knowledge in a nutshell. In fact, the ancient Celtic Salmon of Wisdom became wise by eating them. This nondescript fish lived in a particular pool and the hazels growing around the pool would drop their ripe nuts into the water. With each nut eaten, the salmon grew smarter. He also grew another spot. Salmon are covered with spots so just imagine how wise.
What’s more, all the knowledge of the arts and sciences was thought to be associated with eating hazelnuts.
Hazel trees are thought to protect too. They’ve been used as anti-lightning charms, and sprigs or bundles of twigs were used as good luck charms, especially good luck for safety at sea. Hazel will protect one against shipwrecks. And, even the mistletoe that grows on hazel protects against bewitching. Hazelnut is a symbol of fertility too – a bag of nuts bestowed upon a bride will ensure a fruitful marriage. Prior to WWI, September 14th was the official go collect nuts day. It’s said that Nutcrack Night in November was a time for hazelnuts to be eaten by all the villagers. Ooh I feel a novel coming on!
