Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
The storm that dropped temperatures and ice from Texas to the Mississippi is planning to bring snow my way later today. Anyone who’s read my loving winter post at Romance Books ’4′ Us this week already knows snow brings out the little kid in me. I’m not alone.
LOL that clip always makes me laugh.
We have a perfect sledding hill here. Many’s the winter when we’d invite friends for night sledding. We had it all — adult kids, real kids, sled-chasing (and riding) dogs, warm drinks, strong drinks and munchies. Our sledding nights were gloriously fun. Truck tire inner tubes, cafeteria trays, runner sleds, inflatables of all sorts, and toboggans ran our hill. If it could be ridden, we rode it. One year upon discovering our king-sized waterbed had a leak, we drained it and saved it for sledding. Imagine an inflated king-sized mattress with duct taped handles on it and 10 people piled on like a tackle at the Super Bowl. It was hysterical.
I think about running that hill at night every time we have deep snow. Then I think of that long trudge up the hill.
*********
I stumbled upon some high-resolution magnified snowflake images yesterday and they got me thinking about the mechanics of snow.
This is what gives a flake its shape:
As one of the states of water, snow is made up of two particles — hydrogen and oxygen. Oxygen as the negative force becomes the center molecule that begins the snowflake. Hydrogen, the positive force, attaches to the sides (always 6 sides and always at a 104.5 degree angle). As this bundle drops from the sky it rolls and bumps into other molecules. These get attached and form the snowflake we all find so lovely. The process is rife with variables in temperature and humidity on the long fall to earth so that ensures no two are ever alike. They may be similar, but each is 100% unique.
When I was teaching, I’d describe all the mechanics to my students then follow with this fun project. If you’re interested in cutting out a 6-sided snowflake for winter decorations, youtube has many instructions for paper-folding and cutting “snowflakes”. A good portion of how-to videos offer a fun activity but the end product won’t be a 6-sided flake. You must start with a three fold for that perfect snowflake.
This site offers nice templates
http://www.papersnowflakes.com/6sided
One of the best math explanations comes from Vihart. I find all of her math and geometry videos exceptional. Here, she also shows how to cut out perfect paper stars.

Precious Details
Wow, no one ever explained to me that when you’ve reached the age of “over the hill” time accelerates on the downward slope. I swear I just cooked a Thanksgiving dinner the other day and today my calendar says it’s the 7th already. Today is full of things that need doing and tonight the first of a string of holiday parties. It’s a good time to recycle something! I have just the thing. A few weeks ago, author Victoria Adams hosted me on her blog as part of the publicity for our Exquisite Quills Holiday Anthology debut. Here’s a replay:
A retelling of the Christmas Miracle, and how I came to write it.
I’m often asked how I come to write the stories I do. That answer is hard to pin down because I write all sorts of things from children’s early readers to historical non-fiction. I suppose writing is just the natural progression of a story collector. I’ve been collecting stories ever since I was a child. I especially love when older folks share their memories — I could listen to seniors reminisce for hours. With an active imagination and background in history, I can fill in the blanks and I see their life and times unfold right before my eyes.
Like so many of my generation, I grew up listening to my elders at the kitchen table. Nowhere else in the house was suitable for such discourse. Important conversation could only occur there – a habit harkening back to the days when the hearth was the center of all activity. Melmac coffee cups and chromed percolator, those ritual items of adult conversation in the 1960’s, sat beside ashtrays of Pall Malls whose tendrils of eye-stinging smoke swirled to the ceiling When my parents, aunts, uncles, and friends got together, they discussed everything from politics to the day to day business of their lives. They also played pinochle and laughed and told stories.
I’d sit there on some aunt or uncle’s lap soaking up stories like a little sponge. More often, I’d be somewhere on the floor listening quietly and drawing pictures amid the jungle of legs. I still remember bits and pieces of some of the stories shared at the table, and I’ve collected stories ever since.
When my husband and I moved our little family to this farm house years ago, we immersed ourselves in the land and the history. Everyday details of the area, including adjacent farmsteads, were stories waiting to be discovered. I knew about the man who went to California as a miner ‘49’er and came back after striking it rich. I know there are three children buried along the back road because the farm was quarantined when they lost their lives during the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic. I know about the pioneer cemetery where five children are buried after the morbid sore throat ravaged the family in the 1850’s. I know about the grisly murder of a farm hand and the lime pit on the hill that dissolved the body. I know about the hidy-hole secret in the house next door that hints at Underground Railroad activity. And I wonder about the molar we found in that house’s cistern. From the older folks who remember when rural electrification came through my area in the late1930′s comes one of my favorite stories — How the Christmas tree was lit for the first time when electricity finally came to the country. This is the basis for Star of Wonder. The rest is a tribute to the Christmas story. As with all of my stories, Star of Wonder has its share of metaphor.
Many of our oldest neighbors have passed on, but I still have their stories. I cherish and share the details of their lives wherever I can. And through their retelling, those lives are remembered. I encourage everyone to ask questions of their elders. The details of their lives are as precious as the time left to tell them. Make their stories yours and share them. And then share your own.

A fire sparkling
Only 5 more love quotes to go in the 100 Things Blogging Challenge.I’ve been posting a little something from my chosen topic for nearly 100 days. I’m often so busy I sometimes neglect this blog for other things. Needless to say, making a commitment to blog 100 days at a time is good for me. When this challenge ends, I’ll do another.
Today I’m offering a little something from the Bard. I’ve said before Shakespeare and I go way back…lol no, I’m not that old.
My love of his works traces roots to an honors English class my freshman year in high school. The teacher, compelled by the spelling of my last name, sat me right next to the scale model of Shakespeare’s Globe Theater and the stack of corresponding books I could read if I finished my work before the bell rang. I’ve always been a very fast reader with quick comprehension of the written word so the Bard and I had lots of time together.
As I recall, most of my classmates hated Shakespeare because the language often takes time to interpret. Understanding what he was getting at never gave me trouble, even though he often made up words out of thin air. You have to take the scene as a whole. Once you do that, it all makes beautiful and poetic sense. Shakespeare adherents claim nearly 2000 never-seen-before words came out of that brilliant mind of his, and he often tweaked words. Example: taking a noun and making it a verb of it. Here are just a few we wouldn’t have today if not for his imagination:
academe * accused * addiction * advertising * amazement * arouse * assassination * backing * bandit * bedroom * beached * besmirch * birthplace * blanket * bloodstained *barefaced * blushing * bet * bump * buzzer * caked * cater * champion * circumstantial * cold-blooded *compromise *courtship *countless *critic *dauntless* dawn* deafening *discontent *dishearten* drugged* dwindle *epileptic* equivocal *elbow *excitement *exposure eyeball *fashionable *fixture* flawed* frugal* generous* gloomy *gossip *green-eyed *gust *hint* hobnob *hurried *impede* impartial* invulnerable* jaded* label *lackluster* laughable *lonely *lower *luggage *lustrous *madcap *majestic *marketable*mimic *monumental *moonbeam *mountaineer *negotiate *noiseless *obscene *obsequiously *ode *Olympian *outbreak *panders* pedant *premeditated *puking *radiance *rant *remorseless *savagery *scuffle *secure *skim milk *sparkling *submerge *summit *swagger *torture *tranquil *undress *unreal *varied *vaulting *worthless *zany* gnarled* grovel*
Word lover that I am, I fully appreciate his genius. I’ve used these words in my life and in my writing. Not having them would mean a little less color to our language.
Here’s a love quote for today:
“Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs. Being purged, a
fire sparkling in lovers eyes. Being vexed, a sea nourished with lovers tears. What is it else? A madness most discreet, a choking gall and a preserving sweet.”
~ William Shakespeare

Little Bits of Love
My husband started his “quest” last weekend. That’s what he calls Christmas shopping for me. As he’s described it: “the gifts have to be unusual because you’re an unusual person.”
Hmm…
I think I’m a relatively easy person to give gifts to because I appreciate history and love little old things…Cracker Jack prizes, Heinz pickle pins, Oscar Meyer wiener whistles, bottle stoppers, and assorted bits like that. You just can’t go wrong with little things from yesteryear.
I’ve been a collector of small antiques and collectables since long before I met my husband. I had a great uncle Frank in California who owned an antique store that regularly supplied Hollywood movie sets. Every once in a while he’d come by something little he thought I’d like. I got my first oldies when I turned 5 — a wind-up tin duck from 1930 and a hand-carved wood decoy with crazy offset hobnail eyes from the Civil War era.
The little things Uncle Frank sent were often broken. That sounds strange to say…why would an uncle send a kid broken things? I always understood why because he and I were cut from the same cloth. Just because he couldn’t sell that Victorian bronze cherub broken off its inkwell base didn’t mean the artistry of the piece was any less. He sent it to me because he knew I’d see that too. And I did. That antiques lived their lives before they came into mine is one of the things I love best about them. You can almost feel the history on some pieces. My husband understands this about me too. Over the past 36 years he’s been my largest contributor to my collection of small things. I think of them as little bits of love. I offer proof:
On one quest, my husband found an antique rubber crow decoy for me. It sits atop my living room curtains. I couldn’t begin explain why, but I put little hats on it as whimsey strikes me. Upon determining my hat selection too small, my daughter made an assortment of styles for every season and then some. My favorite is the viking helmet. The crow is currently wearing a derby and a mustache.
lol Yeah I guess I am unusual.

Method or madness
An author’s world is incredibly busy. I had an inkling it might be before I started, but I never knew just how busy. I’m taking a much-needed break from the constant promotion and such redirection might allow some of the sadness from recent losses melt away. I know I’ll lose momentum and get buried under a ton of new books and new authors, but it’s important to put my focus elsewhere for a while. I don’t worry I’ll never regain my footing. Every book is new to someone and all’s well the moment I start promoting again. I love this time of year and using other creative outlets will only boost my literary crafting a few short weeks from now. If I know anything about myself it’s that my creativity cascades. I’ll get back into that “zone”. That’s how I managed to write so many books this past year — I got a creative bump from the holidays last year.
:) Method to my madness.

November 29, 2013
The countdown is on
I make many of my gifts for my loved ones, and all the while I’m seeing to my seasonal projects to accomplish by the end of December, my blogs are somewhat quiet. Because the internet soon buries inactive things, I’ve locked myself into the 100 Things Blogging Challenge to keep my main blog active on the web. That’s winding down too as I head into my last week and a half of love quotes. I like the challenges and may do another come January.
In the meantime, I hope you’re enjoying my stroll down memory lane with vintage holiday postcards. My husband and I are building a scrapbook one card at a time. I’ve been posting one vintage card each day and plan to keep it up from now until January. I just love these things.
