Sannyasis: challenge Mayavada and sunyavada
Caitanya Mahaprabhu repeatedly said, mayavada bhasya sunile haya sarva nasa:
“He is doomed.” Mayavadi haya krsne aparadhi. These are the direct charges
against the Mayavada. My Guru Maharaja also, a staunch enemy of the Mayavada
philosophy. And you are also singing, nirvisesa-sunyavadi. The sunyavadi are
the Buddhist, and nirvisesavadi are the Mayavadis. Pascatya-desa, they are
embarassed with this sunyavadi and nirvisesavadi. Now we are trying to give
them solid personification of the Absolute Truth. Here also, India, they are
spoiled by these Mayavadi. Now it is in your hand, able hands. You are
resourceful, intelligent. Spread this Vaisnava philosophy and challenge this
Mayavada and sunyavada.

On losing grhasthas to maya
Our grhastha devotees, unless they remain in connection to attend our temple
functions, if they remain aloof from the temple community, gradually the
karmi poison will make them lost. You cannot expect them to be like
Bhaktivinoda Thakura or myself. They are neophytes. Unless these things
are continued, the karmi poison will spoil. They can live independently,
but they must be connected to devotional service. … Now, if he goes away
after so much training, it is a great loss to our Society. … The whole
idea is to give up attachment to the material world and to become attached
to Krsna. Now, according to one’s position, gradually param drstva
nivartate. The karmis’ association is very contaminating-asat-sanga. There
is chance. … He should not be dependent on the Society and at the same
time not independent. The Society cannot take charge of one’s family. So
many will come; how it is possible? At the same time, if they remain
independent, the karmis’ poison will affect. Krsna-conscious, ideal
grhastha-that, we want. Just like Bhaktivinoda Thakura. I was a grhastha.
Deity worship, everything was there. I was publishing Back to Godhead from
grhastha asrama. … One must live in the temple or near the temple. If a
brahmacari makes love [after getting married] and lives at the cost of
Society, that is to be discouraged.
… My fear is that after training our men so much, if he is lost, it’s a
great loss. Future of our Society will be hopeless. But if someone can’t
maintain his family, why he should get married? If he has no power of
maintaining, why he should marry?

Illicit father, mother, guru
You become father of hundreds of children. That’s all right. No restriction.
You beget children. But you must make your children immortal. That is the
injunction. You have become guru. That’s all right, Guruji Maharaja. That’s
all right. But make your disciples immortal. Otherwise, don’t, don’t cheat
others. Cheaters. Illicit father, illicit mother. As we say, illicit sex.
Similarly illicit father, illicit mother. Who is illicit father, illicit
mother? Who cannot make his children immortal.

Living As Krsna Lived
Rupa Gosvami Dasa summarizes Srila Prabhupada’s teachings on rural
communities:
Rural communities are meant for cultivating Krsna consciousness. Devotees
should lead a simple, self-sufficient life, totally independent of
materialistic civilization. The way of life to follow is that of Krsna in
Vrndavana.
Self-sufficiency comes from protecting cows, bulls, and oxen, and from the
ecological cultivation of land. Self-sufficiency should be total: food
clothing, medicine, construction materials, and so on.
Each devotee needs to work 120 days a year to guarantee the community’s self
sufficiency. The remaining time is for Krsna conscious programs.
Work should be accomplished without having to travel great distances.
Commercial agriculture is not encouraged. If there is surplus production
without additional effort, then sell or distribute as prasadam.
Devotees should travel in ox carts for ten miles in all directions, bringing
neighbors books, prasadam, and the holy name.
Machinery and electricity are not necessary, but may be used if they don’t
demand a big effort for their acquisition and maintenance.
