Middle Muddle
Writing: Beginning books is fairly easy, although I tend to rewrite those chapters a million times as I get into the project. Endings are good because the end is in sight. It's getting between the two points that can be a wrestle. Summer Players has several plots woven together, and the weaving gets a bit tangled at times. Making good progress, though.

The Little Boy Next Door Has Been Given a Drum
What is it with this neighborhood and drums? I'm feeling a bit curmudgeonly.

Good news! For now . . .
A federal judge has overturned Prop 8, the law banning gay marriage in California! He ruled that it's unconstitutional, making opposite sex couples legally superior to same sex couples.

It most certainly will be appealed, of course, no doubt once again with massive amounts of out-of-state money.

Teeth Gritted, Eyes Squinting
For the first time in a very long time, I am forcing myself through a poorly written book. It's historical fiction and the concept is intriguing, but the writing is shit. Don't ask me what the book is. I don't badmouth other authors by name, but I just had to vent. The editor, if there was one, didn't even bother to polish this turd. The narrative voice is all over the place, it is rife with anachronisms that pull me off the page, there are italics for no apparent reason, the chapter breaks m...

Paul the Octopus
It probably comes as little surprise to most of you who know me that the most interesting thing to me about the recent World Cup (Soccer, heh) tournament was Paul the Psychic Octopus, who rightly predicted the outcome of each and every game by crawling into a plastic box with the flag of the winner printed on it. I like octopi anyway and Paul is a credit to his species and genus. And the world is now Paul's oyster. He's already been in one commercial for a German supermarket chain, has many o...

Comic Con 2010
I went on Thursday to be on a panel (Chris Paolini, Brent Weeks, Patrick Rothfuss, and others) and do a signing, then back on Saturday for the big Random House booth signing and lunch with my editor. We gave away near 150 free books, saw lots of fans and potential new readers. The give away is great. I have people coming back the following year who'd gotten one of my books as a giveaway simply because it was free, then devour the whole series and come back next year with the whole stack!
