Mystery Writers of America Back SFWA's Writer Beware program

Since 1998 members of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America have run a Writers Beware list , which keeps track of unscrupulous publishers, agents, etc. The Mystery Writers of America are throwing in their support for this excellent service.

For all you budding writers out there, take note. There are plenty of sharks out there.

Mermaid or Whale? Vive la France!

A woman friend sent me this. I like it. :-) Not that there's anything wrong with being slim and trim--and I am shedding some pounds for my long term health-- but I'm sick to death of people assuming I'm on the brink of diabetes or high blood pressure because I don't look like Helena "Skeletor" Carter. Both my blood sugar and pressure are excellent, thank you very much, and I wish the nurse would quit looking so damn surprised!

Recently, in a large French city, a poster featuring a young, thin a

Bzzzzzzz

I'm finding the back yard a busy place, now that it's cooled down enough for me to work out there again. All kinds of hummingbirds are visiting my feeder and perching charmingly on the windchimes and in surrounding trees, gorging on the Mexican sage, and dive bombing each other jealously every change they get. There are more of them this year, and also many more bees. They are swarming at the edge of the koi pond to drink and feed at the flowers there, coming and going in a steady stream all da

Fangirl Time: Skins (again)

Anyone else watching the BBC comedy drama, Skins? It's one of the best shows I've seen in a long time and the new season just started here on BBCA! Seasons 1&2 were completely addictive and season 3 looks to be living up to the others.

Short Story

I don't think I've posted this here before. Something I wrote back in '01 for another group. Enjoy!

He leaned over the riverbank and examined the welt swelling across his
left cheekbone. Angry eyes glared back up at him through the red and
yellow leaves drifting past on the current: You've failed again.
Failed at wizardry. Failed at the assassin's craft, failed in your own
birthright. . .Blood on your hands, but you can't even make

Finished!

I finished the revisions to White Road yesterday afternoon, in time to get ready for sangha. Really needed the meditation! My neck and back are screwed up again, with stress and hunching up over manuscript and computer screen.

Meditation was well attended and blissfully peaceful. We sat outside with our tea afterwards, with the paper lanterns and lights from the koi pond. Perfect evening temp. Perfect end to a good day. Neck still hurts, though.

White Road Snippet

Here you go! Something a little different.

It took Seneth ä Matriel Danata Hâzadriël, Khirnari of the Hâzadriëlfaie people, and her escort several hours steep riding to reach the Retha'noi witch man's hut, which stood in an ash grove near the edge of his mountain village. Seneth had started after an early breakfast, and now the midday sun was glinting harshly on the distant crags framing Ravensfel Pass.

The hut was a small, round structure made from sticks and withy, and covered in stretched dee
