Doggy Update
Up far too early today, getting ready to go to the dog beach over at Huntington.
Somewhere along the way, Doug overestimated J's weight. At the vet yesterday, getting him ID chipped, he (J) weighed 77.6 lbs, not 90lbs. We're cautioned that since he's a big dog, he may keep growing for a while, though. As it is, he's a handful on walks. He pulls, and still spooks on rare occassions. We pondered different kinds of control collars, and talked to a trainer. J's not a candidate for a pinch collar...

New Digs
Jackson outgrew his crate and in measuring for the new one, we discovered that his size is "Giant". Once again I say, "What the hell were we thinking???"
Between this and a new water pump and radiator for the car, it's been an expensive day. *sigh*

Ah, Life!
Mireielle Guiliano, in her lovely book French Women Don't Get Fat, taught me that champagne goes with everything. And it does. Last night
suricattus
bought me a lovely bottle of Nicolas Feuillantte in honor of my b'day. We paired it with a couple of gourmet pizzas and it was superb. She also introduced me to my new favorite drink, a Kir Royale— champagne with a dollop of cassis. I drank it mindfully and with great enjoyment.

Joshua Tree Hike
Laura Anne aka
suricattus

A surprising number of Joshua Trees in Joshua Tree Nat'l Park
Laura Anne looking all deserty
The Lost Horse Mine trail went through a recent wildfire burn zone.
Thought this looked like two weary aliens sitting under a tree
Lost Horse Mine found old gold mine

EMI
You probably don't know this about me, but I love electron microscope imagery. This is a link to the image award winners at the Wellcome Collection in England. They have been color enhanced and are really artforms in themselves.

Today's Buddhist Thought
Only for his ruin does renown come to the fool. It ravages his bright fortune & rips his head apart. He would want unwarranted status, preeminence among monks, authority among monasteries, homage from lay families.
- Dhammapada, 5, translated by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.
I couldn't help substituting "Writer" for "monk." Success is a two edged sword, minimum.
