Well Meaning Advice

As a writer and fellow human being, I sometimes seek advice from my peers.  Sometimes the advice is offered without my request.  I often follow said advice.  Occasionally I regret that decision.  ~sigh~

As followers of this blog, know, I recently contracted my urban fantasy, Midnight Sun, Inc. to Crimson Romance
Midnight Sun is the first book in a series I began years ago.  Currently it is a trilogy, but I started book number four...two years ago.  Why is it not finished?  Because on the well meaning advice of my peers, I was told to put it to rest and concentrate on single titles as there was no point in pursuing a series where I had yet to sell book one.

Now, on the surface, that sounds like good advice.  The idea is to SELL books.  But for me, this ended what had been the easiest outpouring  of material I had ever experienced, as well as setting aside a storyline that meant everything to me.

I mention this why?

As writers we must all make difficult decision in our careers and there are times we should turn a deaf ear to those seeking to help us and decide for ourselves what matters most.  This was such a time for me.  I have always believed in this series, it was merely a matter of finding a publisher who shared my vision.

I now find myself with the daunting task of searching out my muse, Raf, who left in a snit when I put him on hold, so that we can pick up where we left off two years ago.  He had something very important to tell me...

Midnight Sun, Inc.

It's official.  I have contracted Midnight Sun, Inc. with Crimson Romance and we're looking at a July release date!

I can hardly believe I put that in print.  This story is dear to my heart and we have trudged a long and weary road together.  Yes, I know there were others before me who walked through fire to get their books to the reading masses.  I salute them, because it was knowing of their tribulations which kept me fighting.

I hope the readers will agree Midnight Sun, Inc. was worth the wait.

It Only Takes One

Sometimes one isn't the loneliest number...at least when it comes to publishers.  It only takes one who embraces your vision to make a writers dream, a reality.  Waiting for that can take years.  In my case, four.

As anyone who has frequented my website knows, I have a series.  A vampire series.  A very different vampire series.  Many publishers have loved it, yet none offered contract...UNTIL NOW!

The paper hasn't been inked yet, but I'll be able to spill the beans soon.  Until then, thanks to everyone who believed in my fantasy!  Love you bunches!

Men of Mystery

Do you ever wonder where the heroes in romance novels come from?  Well, I sure do!  Do you think that's odd for an author to admit?  Sorry if I burst any idealist bubbles.

I have been asked that question or related ones several times in interviews and it always gives me pause.  I really, truly, haven't a clue.  My characters simply appear in my head and tell me their story.  Perhaps I have undiagnosed  schizophrenia?

Sometimes, as  a story unveils, I begin to see specks of people I have known, composites if you will, of persons from my past.  Most often not.

As a writer, I am constantly aware of my surroundings and the people in it.  The least thing to catch my eye could be a catalyst for a new story.I guess it has more to do with perception for me.  Is the man who stops to assist the lady with a flat tire on a backcountry road a good Samaritan or a serial killer?  Can romance blossum when a honest returns a purse left in a Wal-Mart shopping cart?  Can love turn the stone heart  of a demon and earn him not only his soul but his soul mate?

Where do you think heroes come from?

More Questions than Answers

While reviewing 2012 for tax and business purposes I made an odd discovery.  Well, it seems odd to me.  As many of you know, I have two published works (and a zillion as yet unpublished), one is a time travel romance, Dare to Dream, the other a romantic suspense, Mr. Fix-it.  While Mr. Fix-it is the only one to garner "professional reviews,"  Dare to Dream was held in high esteem by my fellow writers, as well it seems, as the public.

Who would have thunk it?!

Mr. Fix-it outsold Dare to Dream by double in the first two weeks of its release but it is Dare to Dream which continues to sell at a slow but steady pace.

Have you had similar experiences?

One of THOSE days

Have you ever had one of those days where everything you do just turns to...?  Welcome to my world. As a writer, I am used to rejection letters, but, that doesn't mean I like them.  I have this series, a paranormal, which everyone loves but no one wants to publish.  It doesn't fit into a prescribed niche.  Have I edited it?  Repeatedly.  The deal is, while there is a strong love story, it isn't a true romance.  The central theme is a mystery of how vampires truly came to be and how they might come to effect the world as we know it.  Urban fantasy best describes it.  Well anyway, I got another "no" today.
Sigh.

I also received notice I had been turned down for a job I interviewed for.  They chose a 30 something over a 50 something.  Go figure!

Even a good deed for a very sick friend and regular customer, got me in dutch at work.  Did I break the rules, absolutely, but with good cause.  Isn't it Judge Judy who always says, "No good deed goes unpunished?"  I rest my case.

Do You Procrastinate?

Christmas is almost here and 2013 is just around the corner.  Are you ready for the new year?

I'm not speaking of resolutions--we all know how quickly those are discarded.  Do you have your house in order?

Admittedly, I have a touch of OCD, so 2012 will not be over for me until the IRS accepts my returns, but aside from that, all the little things I need to do to slide effortlessly into the new year are done.  My files have been updated, old receipts, statements, etc. moved and replaced by spanking new ones.  Any necessary paperwork for the aforementioned taxes have been set aside.  My desk has been cleared of all accumulated debris. (Where does it all come from?!)  Most importantly for me, as of my next paycheck, all outstanding debt will be paid.  I HATE starting a new year in debt!  I have even set up an IRA.

Procrastinator?  Not I!  How about you?

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

It's that time again.  The holiday season is upon us.  The time when diets and schedules go out the window as culinary wonders, parties and frantic shopping steal away our time and resolve.  Yep...'tis the season of insanity!  LOL

May the pumpkin pie not got to your thighs, you not be trampled in the Black Friday throngs and the true meaning of Thanksgiving and Christmas remain in your hearts if not your minds.

Happy Holidays, Everyone!
