Emerald City ComiCon 2011
That's right… another ComiCon is in the books.
I've come to the conclusion that there is a direct, and inverse, correlation between how much fun I have at a con and how much pain I'm in at the end of it. For example, today I feel roughly 80 years old whenever I get up to walk around. Was it worth it? Undoubtedly, and without hesitation, YES!
You see, I absolutely love volunteering at Emerald City ComiCon. I've met some really great people and made some fabulous friends (Yes, Douglas, I'm looking at you, troublemaker!)… but also as a writer, it's a GREAT opportunity for networking.
I got the good fortune to work with con-favorite Wil Wheaton for the weekend, but he was only there Friday and part of Saturday, so I actually had time to do a little shopping and chatting with other guests.
Among the other highlights for me:
Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes, both of whom were very warm and friendly with everyone
Clare Kramer who is stunning and a sweetheart
Jasika Nicole who is also beautiful and charming as well as being a talented artist
Max Brooks, the talented writer of World War Z who also authored a GI Joe graphic novel that I got signed for my hubby.
I also managed to get a LOT more photos this year than last which is always a bonus.
I do also have to say that if you've never done time volunteering at a convention, I recommend you do so at least once in your life. It can be a truly amazing experience.

Emerald City ComiCon
It's that time of year again. Emerald City ComiCon is fast approaching and I have to say I'm insanely excited about some of the stuff that we've got going on this year.
We've got some SUPER cool guests appearing this year, including Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner! We've also got a slew of other Star Trek alums showing up, including Brent "Data" Spiner, Jonathan "Riker" Frakes, and con favorite Wil Wheaton!
In addition, this year will be a treat for Buffy fans as we have THREE members of the cast coming, including the uber-delicious James "Spike" Marsters, Nicholas "Xander" Brendon, and Clare "Glory" Kramer!
Additionally, we have some other cool folks showing up: John Noble (from Fringe and the Lord of the Rings trilogy), Jasika Nicole (also from Fringe), Felicia Day and Amy Okuda (from the Guild), Bruce Boxleitner (from Tron, Tron: Legacy, and Babylon 5) and, perhaps MY favorite surprise of the year, Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus. That's right, kids…. THE BOONDOCK SAINTS!
There's going to be lots of amazing stuff going on, including a screening of Boondock Saints with Norman and Sean, Q&As with all the media guests, a masquerade and costume contest, and a concert with James Marsters at the Hard Rock Cafe.
I'm a regular volunteer at the con and this year, I'm thrilled to say, I'll be heading up Team Wheaton, so anyone who heads through his line will get the bonus of a H.L. Reasby sighting! ;)
Finally, I DO have some copies of Akhet on-hand and I will have them with me so anyone who wants to make arrangements to purchase a signed copy, drop me a line at heather.reasby@gmail.com and we can work that out!
Hope to see you all at the show!

Brian Jacques
I'm absolutely devestated by the news that Brian Jacques passed away over the weekend. He was a wonderful writer, and if you haven't read any of his Redwall books, why on Earth not?!
Mr. Jacques has long been one of my favorites and I was fortunate enough to get to briefly meet the man at a reading/signing he was doing to promote one of his novels, Eulalia. He was warm, he was cordial, he was funny… and he never, EVER talked down. He was truly a class-act and he will be missed terribly.
Now, if you'll excuse me… I need to find some tissues STAT!

NuruSekhmet is now a denizen of Millenium City on Champions...

NuruSekhmet is now a denizen of Millenium City on Champions Online. In the coming weeks, I'm going to be buying up some game store currency so that I can buy team XP bonuses that will give anyone who teams with me during the time it's active (4 hours of game time, not RL time) a 20% to all experience earned while we're grouped.
If you're on Champions, feel free to add NuruSekhmet@NuruSekhmet as a friend!
PS - I couldn't get the costume 100% accurate to the descriptions in the book, but I'll be tweaking periodically as more costume pieces become available.

25 years ago today, five men and two women reached for the stars and like many men and women my age, I watched the space shuttle Challenger lift off only to fall back to Earth moments later.
Even after 25 years, I vividly remember that day. Packed into a classroom with perhaps 40 of my peers (3 or 4 classes worth), we at at desks, on the floor between rows, and in every open space available to watch the small 24" tv that one of the teachers had brought in. As the anticipation of the historic launch built, we were treated to background information about the astronauts, especially Christa McAuliffe who was to be the first teacher in space.
Finally, just when it seemed we couldn't take any more, the Challenger's engines ignited and she lifted off the pad, streaking skyward on a column of orange flame… And then the flight controller gave the command for 'throttle up' and immediately after acknowledgement from the shuttle, it happened. The shuttle disappeared in a cloud of white while the two rocket boosters arced out like the pincers of a giant scorpion in the sky.
"Obviously a major malfunction," said the calm voice of the flight controller, but even so, it just didn't seem real to me until I saw the teachers who had gathered us for the event crying even as they hurried to turn off the tv and reassure us that everything was ok.
Godspeed, Challenger Crew.
