Review of The Book of Alma by Marianne Reese

THE BOOK OF ALMATHE BOOK OF ALMA by Marianne Reese

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Marianne consistently writes books that are enjoyable for all ages. This is the second book of hers I have read, and I loved both. This reminds me of the Hardy Boys books I loved so much when I was young. But, don’t think it’s written exclusively for children. I’m 52, and loved every minute of it!

Review of Skylar Moon by Marianne Reese

SKYLAR MOONSKYLAR MOON by Marianne Reese

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A Well Imagined Hero’s Journey!

Reese hits another home run with this young adult fantasy/sci-fi novel! On a distant planet filled with fantastical creatures and magical spells, the village of Rheyaros is under constant threat of annihilation from the ogre-like race of Xendors, led by the supremely evil Odin.

Odin, after 13 years of searching, finds teenage twins Aren and Alexa, who possess a magic sword that can permanently banish the Xendors from Rheyaros if they can deliver it to Rheyaros and perform a specific ritual during the rare Skylar Moon.

The chase begins. Aren and Alexa must navigate the most hostile of environments, negotiate with strange and potentially hostile races, and somehow outwit the most powerful warrior in their world.

Skylar Moon is a fun, entertaining read designed for teenagers, but with a much wider appeal. I felt as if I knew the twins personally. I could feel their fear, doubt, and ultimate courage as they negotiated an unbearably hostile environment to save their people.

This is the forth book of Reese’s I’ve read, and she always delivers an entertaining read.

Review of Ice Cold: The Dark Zone by Taylor Caley

Ice Cold: Part One: The Dark Zone (The Aeon Chronologies Book 1)Ice Cold: Part One: The Dark Zone by Taylor Caley

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Awesome Hero’s Journey With a Great Ending!

Give Taylor Caley just a little time to set the table for this banquet and you will NOT be disappointed! Once Alex begins his adventure, the pace quickens, the suspense builds, and the combat begins. Alex, an outsider to a fierce group of warriors, must at first remain alive, slowly earn trust, and develop his skills in ancient combat techniques to prove his worth.

The final sequence of battles is very well constructed, researched, and described in exquisite detail. This book has an excellent, highly satisfying ending that has left me hungry for the next installment.

If you like a hero’s journey, good old fashioned blood and sword combat, and well developed characters with deep motivations, this is the book for you.

Review of Blood for Blood by KR Willis

Blood for Blood (A Keira Blackwater Novel Book 2)Blood for Blood by K.R. Willis

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Keira Blackwater is Back and Tougher than Ever!

K R Willis has knocked it out of the park again! Since I fell in love with the super tough, 22 year old heroine Keira Blackwater in Blood Cure, I have been anxiously awaiting the next book in the series. Blood for Blood comes out of the gate strong with a brief nod to the major plot points of book one while jumping right into the action of the new story.

Now, Keira must once again risk everything to maintain her code of honor and her loyalty to her allies. Unfortunately, Keira’s enemies are like the mythical Hydra. For every one she defeats, two more crop up.

Paranormals come in many forms, but they have one thing in common – they all underestimate Keira. I can’t bring myself to spoil such a masterfully crafted plot. I have to let Willis tell you the story.

What I can tell you is how incredibly well constructed the MANY battle scenes are. Willis has a knack for describing deadly hand-to-hand combat in a wide variety of creative scenarios.

The characters all feel like close friends of mine. The pacing is excellent and builds to a crescendo that will absolutely blow your mind. I’m already thirsty for book three.

If you like paranormal, you will love this series (but start with book one). If you’ve never read paranormal, this is the place to start.

I wish I could give 6 stars!

Review of Epicurus and the Pleasant Life by Haris Dimitridis

Epicurus and the pleasant life: Living by the philosophy of natureEpicurus and the pleasant life: Living by the philosophy of nature by Haris Dimitriadis

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Brilliant Fusion of Ancient and Modern Understandings of Happiness! Epicurus is a widely misunderstood philosopher often associated with hedonistic pursuits. Nothing could be further from the truth. 2300 years ago he laid out a plan for personal happiness through seeking natural, wholesome pleasures at every opportunity.

Dimitriadis thoroughly examines Epicurus and many other ancient philosophers through the lens of modern psychology, neurology and biochemistry.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the human mind, and above all, a simple guide to happiness.

5 Star Review of Execution of Justice

5 out of 5 stars  Action Packed, And Very Well Researched.
By Janine R. Pestel on October 21, 2017
Format: Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Execution of Justice by Patrick Dent is simply one of the best books I have had the pleasure to read this year. Action packed, and very well researched, it held my interest from page 1, and had some surprising twists right from the first chapter. I sincerely hope there will be a series revolving around the main characters. I would absolutely highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys an action packed, military novel. Well done, Mr. Dent.

Review of Life of Pi

Life of PiLife of Pi by Yann Martel

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An Extraordinary Tale of One Man’s Search for Meaning!

Pi is a teenage boy who embraces all religions in a desperate search for meaning. When he loses everything and is stranded on a lifeboat for nearly a year, everything he experiences is a metaphor for Darwinism vs. faith.

This may be my favorite book of all time. The movie is in my top two as well.

Everyone who seeks knowledge of the meaning of life must read this book.
