One Good Thing
There are wild turkeys galore in the woods around the house. I've seen as many as 15 flocking through the yard in the summer. And they're big birds. Huge. Today, I saw three in the backyard. Two very large ones and a smaller one. Like parent turkey and their chick...or adolescent turkey. The little one was clearly being kept an eye on by the larger two. It was as if I was watching a child testing its parents' patience. It would run this way, then that, and the big birds would follow, running ...

One Good Thing
This morning, as I was locking up the barn after my workout - Yeah, that's right. I'm hardcore. I workout in a BARN. GRRRRRR - the sweetest warm summer breeze swept over me. It's a very simple thing, but it was lovely. Just lovely. I was glad that I was aware enough to notice it. A few years ago I don't think I would have been. Alex got her "I'm protecting you" act on today. She went nuts when she saw a big ol' snake. Not a gardener or a black snake, but, by the looks of its design, a copper-head. Not fun. But Alex is real damn cute when she thinks she's being all tough, looking back to see if her warnings are being heeded, and wagging her tail furiously. If Remington were still here he would have gotten himself bitten. Alex is smarter than that.

One Good Thing
Went walking again today. By the house there's a foundation for a hen house that was laid long before I was born. I walked along its edges. Not ruins as such, but history nonetheless. Speaking of forgotten things, there was an old ice house by the woods that was filled in decades ago. It's now just a mound of earth covered by brush and limbs. I'd love to excavate. What would I find? My fantastical mind would hope for treasure, a lost painting, or even a skeleton or two. But in truth, there's ...
