Happy Book Birthday!

WE CAN FINALLY BREATHE AGAIN
BECAUSE…
My new book, SIMPLY THE BEST, is on sale today! https://susanelizabethphillips.com/bo...
Too much? I’m a writer, prone to hyperbole, but still…. It feels so good knowing my readers finally have a new Chicago Stars book https://susanelizabethphillips.com/se... to enjoy. (Did I mention SIMPLY THE BEST is on sale today?!) AND…I’m on book tour right now!
In SIMPLY THE BEST, you’ll meet Rory Garrett, a failed chocolatier whose life is falling apart, and Brett Rivers, the uber-successful shark of a sports agent whose life wouldn’t dream of falling apart. (Ha!)
Rory was drunk, and she’d earned the right to be drunk, and anybody who wanted to judge her for it could go to hell. Not that anyone at this party should be judging. “Juliet,” she said, extending her hand to the man who’d made his way out onto the hotel balcony to her side. “As in Capulet.”
“Darth,” he replied. “As in Vader.”
His voice was deliciously husky, his smile silky, and she was surprised to hear herself laugh. “Tell me, Mr. Vader, are you really evil?”
His mouth ticked up at the corner, a mouth with thin, finely carved lips. “It depends on who you ask.”
And so begins their journey….
Here’s what Library Journal (Starred Review!) and Booklist (Starred Review) has to say about SIMPLY THE BEST.
LJ: “Funny and engaging, with twists and turns that keep it moving. Newbies to the series and even sports-averse readers will appreciate this modern-day Cinderella tale from Phillips.”
B: “Readers will want to savor every delectable word in the sublimely talented Phillips’ latest Chicago Stars novel. This is Phillips at her dazzling best.”
(Susan blushes modestly while secretly doing the happy dance.)
As always, you can plunge into the Chicago Stars series at any point since each book stands on its own. (Huge thanks to those of you who pre-ordered. Yes, it makes a difference.) SIMPLY THE BEST coming February 13, 2024

Hurry up, do some cartwheels, and preorder my new Chicago Stars novel, SIMPLY THE BEST, before the copies run out! I mean… I know that won’t happen, but what if it did? Do you really want to miss out?
https://susanelizabethphillips.com/bo... ]
A hard-driving sports agent…
A failed chocolatier...
Her superstar football player brother…
A quirky pink and purple food truck.
AND… to really screw things up, a very unfortunate murder?
No, you definitely do not want to miss this! Brett Rivers and Rory Garrett are two of my very favorite lovers despite their flawswhich they are more than willing to point out to each other. Watching the two of them tangle brought joy to my writer’s heart.
SIMPLY THE BEST is my tenth Chicago Stars novel. As with each one, you can jump into this series at any point because every novel stands on its own. (For long time readers of the series, you’ll enjoy getting re-acquainted with The Python, who is NOT happy with our hero. I’ll say no more. https://susanelizabethphillips.com/se...
If you live near San Diego, Seattle, Phoenix, Chicago, Atlanta, Hilton Head, I’m heading your way on the SIMPLY THE BEST Book Tour between February 12 and February 18. I’ll be talking, signing books, taking photos with you, giving out some prizes, and trying not to put my foot in my mouth. https://susanelizabethphillips.com/ev... (Every bookstore I visit will have autographed bookplates in case you can’t attend.)
Enjoy this peek at Rory and Brett’s first (ill-fated) meeting. Sneak Peek https://susanelizabethphillips.com/bo...
Happy Reading,

SIMPLY THE BEST coming February 13, 2024!
Dear Readers,
I’m Dee-Lighted to announce I have a new book coming out on February 13, 2024. SIMPLY THE BEST is the story of a hard-driving sports agent, a failed chocolatier, her superstar football player brother, a quirky pink and purple food truck and—to really screw things up—a very unfortunate murder. It’s a romp, a romance, a mystery. You can expect the stubborn hero and equally stubborn heroine to butt heads (and other parts). You can also expect a story about family relationships, loyalty, ambition, and decent people trying to become their best. I love these characters, and I’m so proud of this book.
SIMPLY THE BEST is my tenth Chicago Stars novel, and, as with each one, you can jump into this series at any point because every novel stands on its own. (For those of you who’ve asked, you just might see a few familiar figures pop up again.😊)
Many of you know I created the sports romance genre many years ago, but—full disclosure—I had no idea what I’d done, and I certainly never imagined the way this series would make its way into readers hearts. Thank you all for your many emails, visits to my social platforms, and for showing up when I’m on tour. (More about that upcoming.)
You can read an excerpt from SIMPLY THE BEST here https://susanelizabethphillips.com/bo... and also preorder https://susanelizabethphillips.com/bo.... (If you follow other authors, you know how important those pre-orders are to us, and how much we appreciate them.)
Enjoy this sneak peek at Rory and Brett’s first, disastrous encounter.
Happy reading,
Susan Elizabeth Phillips

SEP "Interviews" T.S.
Dear Friends,
If you happened to be eavesdropping on my latest imaginary conversation with an internationally famous pop star whose initials are T.S., this is what you’d have heard.
[Phone rings]
Taylor: SEP, it’s Taylor. [She calls me “SEP” because we’re besties.]
SEP: Hey, Tay, what’s up?
TAYLOR: You might have read that I’m dating a football player.
SEP: Jeez, TayTay, Travis Kelce is more than just a football player. He might be the greatest tight end in NFL history.
TAYLOR: Yes, I can attest to his tight—
SEP: TMI, babe! What you and Travis do off the gridiron is none of my business. Although, I do admit I’m curious…
TAYLOR: [Brushing that aside] I need some advice. With all my singing, guitar playing, composing, and conquering the world, I—
SEP: Don’t forget about counting your money. Seriously, Tay? You’re worth a billion dollars now?
TAYLOR: Only on paper.
SEP: [muttering] Green paper…
TAYLOR: Despite my mega-successful career, which makes me one of the most famous women in the world, I don’t know much about professional football, and since you’re an authority on love affairs with NFL players, I thought you might give me some advice.
SEP: (Modestly) I do know my way around a locker room.
TAYLOR: How about a few tips on dating a pro player?
SEP: First, learn the terminology. ‘Sweet spot,’ ‘forward pass,’ ‘going deep’…”
TAYLOR: Interesting.
SEP: And also, make him carry the groceries.
TAYLOR: We don’t really buy our own— [Frustrated] Frankly, I was hoping for something a little more insightful.
SEP: I’m too busy for insight. I have a new book to promote. [SIMPLY THE BEST, on sale February 13] But since we’re such good friends, I’ll send you copies of all my Chicago Stars football romances. Once you’ve finished reading them, you’ll know everything there is to know about football romance.
TAYLOR: Thanks so much, SEP. What a generous thing for you to do.
SEP: You’re welcome. All I need is your credit card information.
TAYLOR: You’re charging me?
SEP: No! Of course not. Please don’t write a mean song about me. I’ll send the books for free, I promise. I’ll even throw in a friendship bracelet!
TAYLOR: Thanks, SEP. You’re the best. It’s truly humbling when a big superstar author like you takes the time to talk to little old me.
[Note from SEP: Even in my imaginary conversation, she didn’t say that. What she actually said was, “Stop messing around and get back to work!”]

Really, Susan? Really?
Dear Readers,
ME: Before WHEN STARS COLLIDE was published, I very politely pointed out that it took me almost two years to write that book, and I respectfully—RESPECTFULLY—requested that you didn’t read it in ONE DAY. And what happened? Far too many of you did just that. Two years of my hard work consumed by you in one day! That’s just not right.
YOU THE READER: Really, Susan? Really? You’re lecturing us for enjoying your new book?
ME: (Backtracking, ever so slightly.) Not exactly lecturing. More pointing out that—
YOU THE READER: Stop right there! Do you seriously expect us to believe you aren’t flattered out of your mind that we couldn’t put Olivia and Thad’s story down?
ME: (In a very small voice.) Okay. You have a point.
YOU THE READER: You’re darned right! What are you going to complain about next, you ingrate? The fact that we, your loyal readers, put WHEN STARS COLLIDE at #12 on the USA TODAY Top 100 bestseller list? Number 12 of all the books sold in this country! And you’re complaining?
ME: (In an even smaller voice.) No, no. Not complaining… It’s just that--
Two years work consumed in one day?
YOU THE READER: It’s a fast read! And not everybody read it in a day. Some people took two days, three days. My friend took a week.
ME: (With a yelp) Someone took an entire week? I’m a failure! I’ll never write another book. (Quiet sob.)
YOU THE READER: (In a soothing voice) Come a little closer, dear SEP, so we can slap you upside the head!
AND…back to me being serious for a change.
Thank you, thank you thank you! I’m so grateful to all of you who’ve given WHEN STARS COLLIDE such an enthusiastic reception—whether you read it in a day or are savoring it one chapter at a time--whether you’re reading it in E-format, in the beautiful hardcover edition, listening to it on audio, or waiting patiently for your turn at the top of your local library’s waiting list.
With each book I write, I’m giving you a big chunk of my heart, and you can’t imagine how much encouragement I get from the emails you’ve sent me, the lovely comments you’ve posted on my social media platforms, and especially from the amazing 5 STAR reviews that so many of you have taken the time to post.
With gratitude,
Susan Elizabeth Phillips

This is payback, right?
“You might be a great singer,” Thad said, “but you’re crap at making apologies.”
Olivia could only grovel for so long. “I’m a soprano. Sopranos aren’t supposed to apologize.”
Thad actually laughed.
“Truce?” The Diva said, hoping for the best even though she knew she didn’t deserve it.
“I’ll think about it.”
The cab turned down a one-way street and pulled up in front of a seedy-looking bar with a neon cactus flickering in the window.
“While you’re thinking...” she said, “…would you mind lending me cab fare to get back to the hotel?”
“I might,” he said. “Or… I have a better idea. Come in with me. I doubt the guys have ever met an opera singer.”
“Go into that awful bar?”
“Not what you’re used to, I’m sure, but mingling with the commoners might be good for you.”
“Another time.”
“Really?” The quarterback’s eyes narrowed. “You think all it takes is a couple of ‘I’m sorrys’ to make up for character assassination? Words are cheap.”
She gave him her steadiest gaze. “This is payback, right?
“Oh, yeah.”
“I’m barefoot,” she pointed out with a certain degree of desperation.
He regarded her with silky animosity. “I wouldn’t have thought of it otherwise. If there’s too much broken glass, I’ll carry you over it.”
“You want revenge this much?”
“Hey, I said I’d carry you, didn’t I? But never mind. I know you don’t have the guts.”
She laughed in his face. A big, theatrical “Ha!” that came straight from her diaphragm. “You don’t think I have the guts? I’ve been booed at LaScala!”
“They booed you?”
“Sooner or later it happens to everyone who sings there. Callas, Fleming, Pavarotti.” She reached for the cab’s door handle, stepped out onto the dirty pavement, and turned to gaze down at him. “I gave them the finger and finished the performance.”
He didn’t move. “I think I might be having second thoughts.”
“Afraid to be seen with me?”
“I’m afraid of you in general.”
“You’re not the first.” She marched toward the flickering neon cactus.
I hope you enjoyed this small excerpt from WHEN STARS COLLIDE. If you haven’t yet met Chicago Stars quarterback Thad Owens and opera superstar Olivia Shore you might not know how hard it is for a Diva to apologize, but she’s determined to give it her best. Want to know more? Here you go!

A Shocking Situation!
“Of all my life experiences,” Thad muttered, “I never once imagined myself wandering around in the Colorado mountains with only a pair of boxer shorts, my old Nikes, and a naked diva.” — WHEN STARS COLLIDE
Dear Readers,
A shocking situation! But it’s not Olivia’s fault she’s naked. Things happen. And this scene, by the way, was inspired by a real life situation that happened to friends of mine. (I have very interesting friends.)
Here’s just a sample of what I had to go through dealing with these two stubborn, talented, too-smart-for-their-own-good characters in my new novel, WHEN STARS COLLIDE.
First, there’s Olivia Shore, superstar opera diva, and one of my favorite heroines ever:
“You might be a great singer,” Thad said, “but you’re crap at making apologies.”
Olivia could only grovel for so long. “I’m a soprano. Sopranos aren’t supposed to apologize.”
Really, Olivia? Still, I forgive you. You’re a very good person who’s had a string of very bad luck.
And let’s talk about Thad Walker Bowman Owens, the Chicago Stars backup quarterback. He might be sexy, but he’s far from perfect.
Women had thrown themselves at him before, but he wasn’t used to getting an elbow to his gut when they did it. At his age, he should have known better than to ever tell a woman to calm down….
Yes, Thad, you really should have, which makes me wonder if any of you have ever had someone tell you to calm down when you’re upset? (I’m not naming any names, but feel free to email me with your stories. Or not.)
In my admittedly biased opinion, WHEN STARS COLLIDE is the perfect book to launch you into the heart of a wonderful fall.
Here’s an excerpt if you want to read more. https://susanelizabethphillips.com/wh...
And a huge thank you to everyone who’s already ordered. You’re the best!
Happy Reading,
Susan Elizabeth Phillips
P.S. If your budget is strained right now, hurry to get on the waiting list at your local public library. We do love our libraries!

(I’ll send out the rest of her questions after I’ve looked up the answers.) 😃
