No, my friends. It didn't work. I tried to bribe my publisher to move up the publication date of FIRST STAR I SEE TONIGHT to—let's say—tomorrow, but they are un-bribable. I even offered to lend them Mr. Bill for the summer, but they gave me that fishy-eyed look that said I'd gone too far. Ah, well, their loss.

FIRST STAR I SEE TONIGHT Cover Designer Interview
First Star I See Tonight
It's done! Here's the gorgeous cover of my new Chicago Stars book, FIRST STAR I SEE TONIGHT, which will be available on August 23rd. Yes, my husband, aka Mr. Bill, is the one who came up with the title. (FYI, he also titled MATCH ME IF YOU CAN.)
Ever wonder how book covers are created? I had a few questions for the designer of the FIRST STAR I SEE TONIGHT cover. She's shy, so I'll call her "Frida," in honor of one of my favorite artists.
Me: How long have you been doing cover design, and about how many covers have you created?
Frida: I've designed hundreds of covers over the past 8 years. [Note from SEP: Yikes!]
Me: Do you welcome author input or wish we'd all stay the heck out of your way?
Frida: I appreciate author feedback and don't mind receiving initial direction. I also explore my own ideas and try to create something they didn't expect to see for their book. And it's always great to hear that an author loves your cover! [Note from SEP: Oh, yes, I do!]
Me: What was your inspiration? What were you trying to convey with the FIRST STAR cover?
Frida: I was inspired by photos of beautifully lit nighttime parties. I did a lot of photo research of string lights in trees, table settings, and tents. My first round of comps felt too dark and very busy with the lights. Then I came across the chandelier photo and thought it would sit nicely against a starry sky while leaving me room for big type. It also allows the cover to feel light and shimmery while still conveying a nighttime setting. [Sound coming from SEP: A long, lovely sigh...]
In FIRST STAR I SEE TONIGHT you'll meet some new characters from the Chicago Stars Series, as well as reconnecting with a few familiar ones. I'll be posting a sneak peek soon. In the meantime....
He's a former quarterback for the Chicago Stars football team.
She's trying to make a success of her very own detective agency.
Her first job? Follow him.
Let's just say it's not going well.
Not well at all....
