HEROES ARE MY WEAKNESS

The dead of winter.
An isolated island off the coast of Maine.
A man.
A woman.
(Five puppets.)
And…

He’s a reclusive writer whose macabre imagination creates chilling horror novels. She’s a down-on-her-luck actress reduced to staging kids’ puppet shows. He knows a dozen ways to kill with his bare hands. She knows a dozen ways to kill with laughs.

But she’s not laughing now. Or not much, anyway. When she was a teenager, he terrified her. Now they’re trapped together on a snowy island off the coast of Maine. Is he the villain she remembers or has he changed? Her head says no. Her heart says yes.

It’s going to be a long, hot winter.

Hot Winter News from Susan Elizabeth Phillips

New Book Title!
February Visit to Southern California
THE GREAT ESCAPE coming out in mass market paperback
Gosh, I haven’t even given you the details, and I’m already exhausted. (Just joshin’.) For months I’ve been referring to my next book as The Book That Shall Not Be Named. Guess what? It’s time for the big reveal.... Ready? Set. Go!

HEROES ARE MY WEAKNESS

The dead of winter,
An isolated island off the coast of Maine,
A man,
A woman,
A sinister house looming over the sea.
It’s going to be a long, hot winter.

HEROES ARE MY WEAKNESS (and are they ever!) is scheduled for publication in August 2014. I know. It’s still a way off, but the book is finished and in production now. An excerpt from the first chapter will appear in the mass market paperback edition of THE GREAT ESCAPE, which goes on sale March 25. I’ll also be publishing it in the Members Lounge section of my spiffy new website.

As for my February visit to Southern California... I’m going to be in the area visiting friends and I figured, what the heck, as long as I’m there, why don’t I meet up with some of you for an informal chat? I’ll talk about my new book—no copies available yet, sniff, sniff—share stories about THE GREAT ESCAPE, and offer a few tips to those of you trying to write your own books. (Knowing the way I am, I’ll probably also share way too much about my personal life!)

Thanksgiving wishes and recipe from Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Dear Friends,

As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving here in the States, I’m feeling thankful for all of you. (Well, a couple of you are crazies, but only a few!) ☺ I am so blessed to have such wonderful readers, and yes, I know who you are. I love being able to communicate with you through email, my website, Facebook, and Twitter, but most of all, through my books.

By the time you read this letter, Editor Carrie will have received the completed manuscript for my new book. I have a title, which I’ll be revealing soon. There’s no definite publication date, but I suspect it will be published in the second half of 2014.

Here’s one of my favorite recipes that is part of the Phillips Family’s Thanksgiving and Christmas tradition. It’s a different take on cranberry sauce, one that I’ve discovered even those who aren’t crazy about cranberry sauces seem to enjoy. (With the exception of a certain eight-year-old boy, who made a face like you wouldn’t believe when I gave him a taste, but what do kids know anyway?)

HOLIDAY RELISH
(Recipe originally from Parade magazine)
1 (12 oz) bag fresh cranberries
1 large apple, peeled, cored, and coarsely chopped (I use a sweeter apple like Gala or Fuji instead of a Granny Smith)
1 C dried golden raisins
¾ C sugar
½ C orange juice
½ t cinnamon
1 T balsamic vinegar (Yes, you read that right)
Combine everything EXCEPT vinegar in heavy bottomed saucepan. Stirring, bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer gently until relish thickens, about 5 minutes. Removed from heat, stir in vinegar, cool and refrigerate. Tightly covered, will keep for 2 weeks in refrigerator, but it makes a lot and freezes beautifully, so I usually set aside half for Christmas. (Except last year, I forgot to thaw it out and didn’t serve until a couple of weeks ago. Believe it or not, still delish.)

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
Susan

My Next Book

My next book, it’s done (well almost)and I’m in the editing process right now. I do have a title, which I will be announcing soon. No publication date yet.
The book contains new characters, including a VERY dangerous hero. (Or is he the villain?) The setting is fresh to me, and I have a heroine I adore. I’m not ready to say much more at this point, but as soon as I’m ready, I’ll be talking about it on Facebook as well as in my newsletter. Sign up if you want to know more.

March News from Susan Elizabeth Phillips

The Great Escape A Novel by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Dear Friends,

My New Year’s Resolution was to send out more newsletters. Obviously, I have failed miserably. On the other hand, my resolution to give up reading depressing books has succeeded admirably.

If you haven’t been following me on Facebook, you’ve missed, among other topics, a fascinating discussion about Gone with the Wind, my rant on plagiarism, comments about my ridiculous obsession with almost-naked photos of David Beckham, and tons of great book recommendations from both me and your fellow “Seppies.”

As for my own book news, the trade paperback edition of THE GREAT ESCAPE comes out on April 2. It’s available for preorder now from booksellers like Barnes and Noble and Amazon, as well as your friendly Indie store. The German edition on May 14. Here’s a Sneak Peek. I am still hard at work on my next book—about halfway through writing it and LOVING IT so much, but I’m not quite ready to talk about it yet. When I am, you’ll be the first to know!

I’d like to keep all of you around as readers for a very long time, so here’s a healthy family recipe that’s also delicious. More fall than spring, but what the heck. It’s from Jennifer Garner, found in People Magazine. (Hey, if it’s good enough for Jen and Ben, it’s even better for us.) I’ll give you the original recipe first, then my (excellent!) adaptations. Enjoy.

MAPLE LEMON SWEET POTATOES
ORIGINAL RECIPE: (See my alterations below)

2 lbs. sweet potatoes peeled and cut into 1" X 2" chunks
1 Tbsp. olive oil
½ Tsp. kosher salt
1/8 tsp. ground black pepper
2 Tbsp. maple syrup
2 Tbsp. lemon juice

Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit
Toss sweet potatoes with olive oil, salt and pepper in baking dish.
Cook until almost tender, 25 - 30 minutes.
Whisk syrup and lemon in small bowl
Remove potatoes from oven and drizzle ½ maple-lemon mixture over potatoes.
Stir gently, return to oven, bake additional 10 - 15 minutes until potatoes are tender.
Remove from oven, drizzle with remaining maple-lemon mixture, and serve.
MY ALTERNATIONS:

I have no idea what 2 lbs. of sweet potatoes look like. I figure about ½ a sweet potato per person if there's a lot of other food.
I combine sweet potatoes, olive oil, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl then transfer into a foil lined baking dish--using a large enough dish so the chunks aren’t on top of each other. (easy clean up)
I vary the quantity of the maple/sugar lemon juice mix according to how many potatoes I’ve made. AND--important!--I go heavier on lemon juice than maple syrup. Maybe 2-1, maybe not quite that much. BUT the lemon juice is the key to bringing out the sweetness of the maple syrup and potatoes.

Happy reading (and eating),

SEP
