Hookers, harlots and Hell on Heels

There are undoubtedly a few hookers in San Diego (although I believe the preferred nomenclature is either “ladies of the night” or “sex workers”). Hey, it’s a military town, and the reputation of single seamen on shore leave remains salty, despite the sanitized Gaslamp Quarter.

Harlots, too, are in high demand. In fact, a Belgian Extra beer by the name of The Harlot from Societe Brewing Co. was named by the Brewing Network in 2013.

But what we’re really here to talk about today, my horny hotties, is Hell on Heels, another hifalutin’ burlesque troupe here in San Diego.

hell-on-heels

Voted Best Theatre Group in San Diego in 2009 by Channel 10’s A-List, the group performs vintage burlesque acts paying homage to the 1920s through the 1950s.

Current troupe members include co-owner Martini Bombshell, along with Cherry Poppa, Tina Triumph, Lulu Minx, Gardenia Mae, Milly Marie and Core D’Lux.

These ladies love to shimmy and shake, bump ‘n’ grind, fan their feathers, twirl their tassels and set it all to a little mood music to make you feel good.

They’ve performed with New York’s Dangerous Curves Ahead: Burlesque On The Go-Go, as well as title holders Ruby Champagne, Anita Cookie and Holly Dai.

You may have also seen them opening for musical acts like Richard Cheese, Mike Ness, Cash’d Out or Los Straitjackets.

From the Stingaree to the Gaslamp: San Diego’s Naughty Past

Although San Diego’s Gaslamp area is a commonly known tourist destination in 2015, that wasn’t always the case.

In fact, the Gaslamp used to be San Diego’s Red Light District!

According to the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation, the part of town from the waterfront between 1st and 6th Avenues up to Market Street was formerly known as The Stingaree, as far back as the 1880s. Why? “Sailors joked that it was far easier to get ‘stung’ in this bawdy part of town than it was in the bay with all its stingrays.”

The Stingaree was home to bars, brothels, gambling dens, shooting galleries and other unsavory types of businesses. Interestingly, there was a brief cleanup campaign instituted in 1912, as an effort to make the city appear more hospitable to visitors for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. Check out the American Historical Association’s Perspectives on History article for more info on the more political side of this conservative crackdown, which concludes: “By the opening of the exposition in 1915, the Stingaree no longer threatened the favorable, sanitized image touted by San Diego’s leading citizens.”

“This is not a brothel” image by Flickr user Tom Coates

Of course, the newly sanitized area couldn’t stay clean forever! As the same article notes, after WWII the expanding naval presence in San Diego meant more sailors in search of diversions while on shore leave, and the Gaslamp returned to its carnal nature with dive bars, massage parlors, and peep shows providing entertainment for the saucy seamen.

This reputation for bawdiness stuck all the way up until the 1970s, when local business owners banded together once more and revamped the Gaslamp with its current Victorian theme. Faux gas lamps were installed, along with brick sideways, to recreate the historic feeling of a 19th century neighborhood.

Today you can take a walking tour of the cleaned-up quarter, starting from the William Heath Davis House Museum, every Saturday at 11 AM and every Thursday starting at 1 PM in the summer. Along the way you’ll view such historic buildings as the Louis Bank of Commerce (835 to 837 5th Ave.).

Louis Bank of Commerce, photo via the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation

Louis Bank of Commerce, photo via the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation

The bank’s upper floors were formerly home to the Golden Poppy Hotel, described by the Historical Foundation as “a notorious brothel run by fortune teller and early marketing genius, Madame Cora.” Apparently Madame Cora instructed her stable of sex workers to flaunt their wares by day, offering potential clients marbles that matched their dresses, enticing them to return to the brothel come nightfall to procure a little alone-time with the woman whose lingerie matched the marbles. Stay classy, San Diego!

The Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation & William Heath Davis House are located at 410 Island Ave. in the Gaslamp Quarter.

For fun fucking in San Diego, try…

F is for… Frederick’s of Hollywood? Think again, you foolish fiend!

For one thing, Frederick’s is clearly based in LA.

Friends, let’s talk fucking. More precisely, let’s talk about where you get get your horizontal polka on in San Diego.

For fun fucking in San Diego, try…

Fucking al Fresco

Mother Nature ain’t afraid of a little nudity, much less a little skin-on-skin action in the Great Outdoors. So where are the best places to bonk in the buff?

According to some saucy Yelpers, San Diego’s best places for public sex include:

Black’s Beach
Coronado Beach dunes
“Top of the Convention Center at night because no security guard has the leg muscles to climb all those stairs”
In the fall leaves at unspecified locations in Julian: “Apple cider first, then the roll in the leaves. Kind of crunchy.”
Balboa Park under a blanket”
Skyfari Aerial Tram at the San Diego Zoo (from an adventurous type obviously well versed in quickies, since this ride lasts about 5 minutes!)
“Off in the bushes with your totally pervy first boyfriend while hiking Cowles Mountain
“Any golf course
“In a gondola at SeaWorld
“Go to one of those old retirement gated communities, park in one of the few non-handicapped spots and go at it for hours. It’s not like the old folks can see or hear you, then make sure you jump in their pool after to cool/clean off.”

And my favorite for the Most Imaginative Place to Fuck Al Fresco in San Diego has to go to the Magical Adventure Balloon Rides company, offering the “Mile High Flight,” which includes a private flight “in the privacy of an enclosed dome tent with private view as our discreet pilot ascends to 5,280 feet (1 mile). We provide a music player, you provide the music, blankets, pillows and imagination.” Bow-chicka-wow-wow!

“Mr. Smiley Hot Air Balloon” image by Flickr user Garrett Heath

The balloon ride takes approximately one hour, and includes both a premium champagne toast and breakfast at the South Coast Winery Resort and Spa after you land. It’s $1,000 for the package for two, and another $169 per additional person. Talk about a unique place for a three-way!

Fucking in Sexy Hotels

For those with a fear of being nabbed in flagrante delicto, let’s talk sexy hotels, shall we?

I’ve already mentioned Hotel Andaz for its Star Suite stripper pole, king-sized bunk bed, and see-through shower walls.

For those that prefer a more rock ‘n’ roll approach, the Hard Rock Hotel offers a private outdoor Jacuzzi in its Diamond Rock Star Suite.

The Keating offers its Fresca Spa Suite as a secluded alternative to fucking in public. Give their private atrium a whirl, with its Jacuzzi and alfresco steam shower.

Or look down on the Gaslamp from the Fuji soaking tub in the Masters Suite at Hotel Solamar. Rrrrrowr!

If you like to watch, consider The Pearl’s Gem rooms, with mirrors on the ceiling and luxury linens on the bed. Oh la la!

Did I miss any other hot spots for fucking in San Diego? Do let me know!

What the Duke Wants: An excerpt + #giveaway from Amy Quinton

BBT_TourBanner_WhatTheDukeWants

Upstanding duke desperately seeks accident-prone wife from trade…

England 1814: Miss Grace (ha!) Radclyffe is an oftentimes hilariously clumsy, 20-year-old orphan biding her time living with her uncle until she is old enough to come into her small inheritance. Much to her aunt’s chagrin, she isn’t: reserved (not with her shocking! tendency to befriend the servants), sophisticated (highly overrated), or graceful (she once flung her dinner into a duke’s face). But she is: practical and in love… maybe… perhaps… possibly…

The Duke of Stonebridge is an agent for the Crown with a tragic past. His father died mysteriously when he was 12 years old amid speculation that the old duke was ‘involved’ with another man. He must restore his family name, but on the eve of his engagement to the perfect debutante, he meets his betrothed’s cousin, and his world is turned inside out. No matter, he is always: logical (men who follow their hearts are foolish) and reserved (his private life is nobody’s business but his own). And he isn’t: impulsive or in love… maybe… perhaps… possibly…

Can he have what he wants and restore his name? Can she trust him to be the man she needs?

An excerpt from What the Duke Wants

BookCover_WhatTheDukeWantsA knowledgeable lady understands that, typically, the best way to make a good first impression is not to fall bottom first into a puddle of mud. Alas, Grace Radclyffe, with her inclination towards unfortunate mishaps, found this knowledge to be generally useless in the reality of her everyday life.

Therefore, despite the uncomfortable feeling of wetness seeping through her gown and the faint-though-nearby sound of dripping mud, she did what any sensible lady of good upbringing would do in less than ideal circumstances. She cursed. With conviction.

“Bloody hell. Not again.”

So maybe she didn’t say that. But it was something she occasionally thought in her mind, though only in her mind.

In actuality, she chuckled lightheartedly (because it’s always best to set yourself and any potential rescuers at ease in awkward situations) and graciously procured the proffered handkerchief dangling over her left shoulder. Then, after clearing the mud from her face so she could actually see and with cheeks tinged only slightly from embarrassment (because, really, that kerchief hadn’t been dangling over her shoulder on its own), she peered up to thank her would-be rescuer and gasped. Out loud.

For staring down at her with one eyebrow lifted in question, were a pair of eyes—emerald green eyes to be more precise. The most deeply penetrating emerald green eyes she had ever seen in all of her near twenty-one years.

Cast a spell with The Enchantress: Lingerie to enhance your curves

The Enchantress is a San Diego lingerie store for women with big, beautiful curves.

As their website explains, they are “a bra and swim boutique for the full cup woman.”

Offering cup sizes D through K and band sizes 28 to 52, they’re all about helping full-figured women get the best fit. The store stocks molded bras, soft cups, bustiers, nursing and maternity bras, swimwear and sports bras, as well as bridal foundation garments.

Owner Laurie Thomas has been fitting bras since 1992, when she first opened The Enchantress in the Grossmont Shopping Center. (They have since moved to another location closer to Mission Valley Mall.) Her motto is “if the bra fits, wear it,” and encourages customers to try on all bras before they buy, as sizes can differ from one brand to another. She also shares many more interesting insider tidbits about finding the right fit — and the myriad reasons for bras varying widely in size — at The Enchantress Blog.

The Enchantress is located at 1400 Camina de la Reina, Suite 120 in Mission Valley.

D is for Drop Dead Dames Burlesque Revue

Get ready for triple D! No, not the Guy Fieri show: it’s the Drop Dead Dames Burlesque Revue.

drop-dead-dames

The troupe originally formed about five years ago with seven members, including producers Ginger N. Whiskey and Bibi Bordeaux. Today the troupe consists of nine Dames: Donna DeMuerte, Valentina On The Rocks, Dottie Deville, Stella Foxtrot, Jacqueline Chaton, Dee V’Ous, Sassy Stiletto, and producers Ginger N. Whiskey and Eva Mae Garnet.

The Dames usually perform to recordings, as opposed to live music, and promote a classic 1950s-style of burlesque. Using the music of the era to inspire their routines, the Dames create an exquisite illusion for their audiences using costumes, props and overall ambiance. A typical show allows patrons to enjoy reveling in the golden era of burlesque, but in a modern setting.

Inspiration comes from legends of burlesque like Tempest Storm, April March and Toni Elling, among others.

Naturally, the Dames are glamorous and love to play with sexual innuendos and clever reveals in their acts, but they’re also classically trained dancers. Ginger N. Whiskey has over 15 years of training in ballet, jazz, modern dance and world styles.

Catch the Drop Dead Dames at their next show on June 20 and 27 at Queen Bee’s in North Park! The Classic vs. Neo show will feature the Dames representing all things classic, while Pixie Stixx Burlesque will introduce you to modern interpretations of the art. Whether you prefer to go retro or modern, there’s a little bit of something for everyone in store, so grab your pasties and a G-string and let’s get shakin’!

For more information about the Drop Dead Dames (including red-hot pix and videos), check out dropdeaddamesburlesque.com.

C is for The Crypt: Sexy San Diego from A to Z

The Crypt is an adult entertainment store (aka sex shop) in San Diego. Their motto is “play naughty, play nice.”

crypt-logoThe store won the title of Best Adult Bookstore in San Diego from CityBeat in 2013, so if you’re into erotica or porn (or want to debate their friendly sales clerks regarding the difference), this is likely your home away from home.

What can you find for sale at The Crypt? Anything related to pleasure!

They stock:

fetish and bondage gear
leather and clubwear
lingerie
corsets
sex toys
condoms
lube
erotic books and magazines
naughty cards and gifts

Andrew Collins, About.com’s Gay & Lesbian Travel Expert, describes the store as “San Diego gay community’s best source of leather and fetish gear, underwear, S&M gear, dildos, lube and condoms, adult videos, gay and hetero erotica, and sexy attire for clubbing, the beach, or simply looking good around the house.”

I also particularly like this Yelp comment from Ariza S.:

Screen Shot 2015-04-02 at 3.33.56 PM

Clean and creeper-free! That’s actually my main criteria for sex shops, too, along with “female friendly.” And yes, there will be others on my A to Z list, so stay tuned.

The Crypt is located at 3847 Park Blvd. in San Diego.

B is for Butt-Naked Beaches

There are, to my knowledge, two* nude beaches in San Diego County. The first, and most well-known, is Black’s Beach. Perfect for today’s entry on the letter B!

“Black’s Beach Warning Signs” image by Flickr user Tony Webster

Another option, favored by UCSD students, is to follow a steep paved road (Salk Canyon Road) from the southern end of the beach. This is also a popular option for advanced surfers, who love Black’s Beach for the powerful breaks. (But beware the riptides, particularly during winter months.)

A third option is to walk 2 miles south of the parking lot at the base of Torrey Pines State Reserve, along the cliffs and past Flatrock. This is obviously a bit of a trek, so most visitors tend not to use this access.

The final option is only available during low tide, and requires walking 3 miles north from La Jolla Shores Beach, past Scripps Pier and Scripps Beach’s rocky tidepools. Alternately, you can also walk from Torrey Pines State Beach to Black’s Beach during low tide. Again, due to the length of the trip and the need for low tides, most visitors tend not to choose this route.

For those interested in learning more about Southern California’s beaches and trekking along the coast, I highly recommend picking up a copy of Walkabout Malibu to Mexico: Hiking Inn to Inn on the Southern California Coast. You’ll find tons of great tips, maps, and personal descriptions from author Tom Courtney concerning different walking tours you can take in and around San Diego, all the way up to Malibu. (There’s also a Northern California guide, for those looking to hike clear from one end of the state to the other.) If you’re interested in grabbing a digital copy, the “Oceanside to La Jolla” section describes Black’s Beach as well as Torrey Pines State Beach as a whole.

Have you ever visited a nude beach, and would you want to bare it all at Black’s Beach?

* The second nude beach is San Onofre, which is closer to Los Angeles and has been under attack as a clothing-optional destination since 2010. You can check out the Friends of San Onofre Beach for more info on the situation.

A is for Andaz Hotel: Sexy San Diego from A to Z

Today’s the day! It’s April 1st, the first day of the 2015 Blogging from A to Z April Challenge, no foolin’.

Let’s get right to the first destination on my Sexy San Diego list: the Andaz Hotel.

The only hotel in town with a stripper pole, Andaz’s infamous Star Suite also boasts mirrored ceilings, faux fur carpeted King-sized bunk beds, and a shower with walls that can be set to transparent or translucent – depending upon your perversions and preferences.

Furry bunk beds, stripper pole front and center, glass-walled bathrooms at right.

Furry bunk beds, stripper pole front and center, glass-walled bathrooms at right.

Previous guests are rumored to include Prince Harry and John Mayer – though not at the same time!

The Star Suite has also made Sienna Sinclaire’s Naughty Lifestyle list, and will likely be included in her forthcoming Naughty Girl’s Guide to San Diego.

Like to book the room yourself? Just click here. But be forewarned: rates range from $2,500–4,000 per night, according to Hotel Chatter.

The hotel itself offers a luxury boutique experience, and is currently owned by the Hyatt group (some may remember its previous incarnation as the Ivy Hotel). Guest amenities include VIP access to their rooftop bar, RoofTop600, where “Sunset Hour” (aka Happy Hour) runs daily from 5 to 8 PM.

The Andaz Wine Bar serves California wines (obvs!), and during Happy Hour you can score $5 cocktails or flights of five wines, plus 1/2 off food and select glasses of wine.

On Saturdays and Sundays, you can also enjoy their Bottomless Mimosa Brunch from 6:30 AM to 2 PM. Now that’s a sexy way to start your weekend!

Hotel Andaz is located at 600 F Street in the Gaslamp area of San Diego.

Rookie Season: An excerpt + #giveaway from VK Robbins

NBTM_TourBanner_RookieSeason

Talented young ballplayer Clay Love has just been called up from the minors to play major league baseball. Freelance writer and divorcée Rose Lasting, the world’s biggest baseball fan, wasn’t expecting to fall in love when she fell into Clay’s arms, but fall in love she did. Now they are caught up in a whirlwind romance complicated by the paparazzi, Clay’s ex-girlfriend, Rose’s ex-husband, and a stalker who puts Rose’s life in grave danger. Saving her life and catching her attacker takes you on a roller coaster of emotion and intrigue that you won’t soon forget.

Rookie Season is the first book in the Love in the Ballpark Series, by V.K. Robbins. This adult erotic romance tale sizzles with romantic and sexual chemistry, emotion, and suspense. Once you start reading, you won’t be able to put it down.

An excerpt from Rookie Season

BookCover_RookieSeasonLots of unexpected things had happened in my life. When Joel walked out on me after ten years of marriage that was unexpected. When my grandfather died a few months later that was unexpected, too. It seemed like all the unexpected things in my life weren’t the good kind. Until now.

The game moved slowly. Painfully so. Then there were extra innings. I wanted to pound my head on the railing. The only real bright spots were when Clay ran out to take left field. I sat on the edge of my seat and watched his long easy stride. Did he really ask me out? I asked myself again and again. Twice during the game he’d run over to the stands on his way to the dugout and give me the ball he had just caught. The first time he leaned forward and whispered in my ear, “I can’t wait to see you later.” The second time, he handed me the ball and playfully whined like a little kid, “When is this game going to be o-o-o-ver?”

I was thinking the same thing. That’s when Sam chimed in again, “There’s no way he’s twenty-five. No way.” I rolled my eyes and sat down. It looked like Sam was falling into one of his melancholy moods, the kind that started hitting him out of the blue after his wife passed away. But even that couldn’t ruin my excitement.

Finally, the game ended. By that time, I didn’t care about the final score or who won. I hurriedly said goodbye to Sam and jogged my way up the stairs, dodged a bunch of people, and jumped over a few seats to get to the stadium exit.

An interview with V.K. Robbins

How long have you been writing erotica, and what inspired you to get into this genre?

I have been writing erotica for about five years. I decided to start writing it because I had some experiences that I wanted to document. Then I enjoyed reading and writing it so much that I expanded to fantasies, documenting other people’s stories, and writing romance.

What gave you the idea for your latest book?

I love baseball, and Rookie Season’s main character, Rose Lasting, is also a huge baseball fan. She falls in love with a hotshot rookie ballplayer and they have a steamy, romantic adventure with each other. My intention was to make the story primarily an erotic one, with a little bit of romance, but as I started writing, the story of their lives and relationship took over and the book became a romantic suspense novel, with some very naughty erotic scenes.

Who are some of your favorite erotica writers or other literary inspirations?

I just read Ride with Me, by Ruthie Knox, and I love the way she writes erotic scenes. They are certainly naughty and steamy, but they are not dirty in a pornographic way. Of course, sometimes literary porn is exactly what I want to read, but the way she blends the erotica into the romance is masterful.

I read a little bit of everything, so I could go on and on about my literary inspirations. I love Ernest Hemingway’s direct writing style. I love the way Edgar Allen Poe paints a scene and can make me hold my breath for pages. I like James Patterson’s suspense-building techniques and short chapters. I’m currently reading Carmina Revealed, by Adri Sinclair, after reading Hidden Carmina, the first in her series. Sinclair is an indie author, and she has written the best paranormal romance I have ever read. Her creativity continues to surprise me even though I’m over two-thirds of the way into her trilogy. That inspires me.

Describe your typical writing routine. Where do you usually write? How many words/pages per day? Do you keep set hours? What does your workspace look like?

It depends on the day! My computer is set up on one end of our dining room table and my son’s computer is set up on the other end. I have notes and papers scattered around, but I never have trouble finding exactly what I need when I need it — except for pens. I never seem to be able to find a pen when I want one.

I don’t keep set hours, but I do most of writing during the daytime. I home school my youngest son, so I’m home with him all day. When he’s busy learning or exploring things on his own, I write. I try to set a target of a minimum of 2,000 words per writing session; however, I can easily knock out 10,000 words in an eight hour writing day. The problem is that I rarely have eight hours straight to write. It’s more common for me to write for two to three hours at a time.

Do you have any favorite foods or beverages that help keep your creativity flowing?

Not really. I’m a water junkie, so I always have a glass of cold water in front of me. I used to snack on almonds, but I found that I’d keep eating and eating without even knowing what I was doing, so I stopped.

What do you think makes for a good erotic story?

I look for a story, first of all. Then I look for how the erotic parts are written. There should be a good flow. Many people write erotica in a very stilted, almost unnatural way. I want the writing to be so good that it is transparent, so I can lose myself in the scene. I also prefer very direct language and language that fits the scene, rather than strings of euphemisms.

What’s your favorite euphemism for genitalia?

This is a fun question! I’ve seen so many different words and phrases used to describe genitalia, and most of them are either silly or annoying, although like I just said, it’s important for the language to fit the scene. A term like “pipe cleaner” can work in place of “vagina” in the right kind of scene in the right book. But usually not. I prefer the directness of words like cock, pussy, and cunt, but I also like “manhood” and “womanhood” in certain situations. In my opinion, the story comes first, and the language choices should always stay true to the story.
