School Visit: Siersma Elementary
It has been said that good things come to those who wait. Charlie and I agree. In fact, it was proven to us on March 9, 2012 when we visited Siersma Elementary in Warren, Michigan. You see, we had to postpone our visit earlier in the week because of illness. Thanks to Media Specialist Marian Cardamore for rescheduling in a hurry. Notice the sweet Captain America shirt on Mrs. Cardamore. Definitely hero material there as were all the students at Siersma. We appreciate your patience and the...
School Visit: Dekeyser Elementary
Charlie and I really lived the dream on March 8, 2012. We visited two schools, including Dekeyser Elementary in Sterling Heights, Michigan, and went to lunch with not one but TWO awesome media specialists. Marie Smith (pictured below in the back row right) from Dekeyser even paid for our meal! How's that for a famous author perk? And we didn't eat off the McDonald's value menu either. No, Mrs. Smith gave us permission to order combo meals! Woohoo! Kidding, of course! Mrs. Smith and Helena...

School Visit: Messmore Elementary
After two days of illness, Charlie and I returned to work on March 8, 2012. Our first stop, Messmore Elementary in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Up above you'll see Charlie pictured with two reading heroes and Media Specialist Helena Foust (back row left). She invited us to Messmore, went to lunch with us, and made our visit a huge success. She will be taking a well deserved vacation soon … not necessarily because of our visit! Below, watch as Charlie entertains the students with a...

School Visit: Grandview Elementary
Grandview Elementary in Livonia, Michigan is a school of superheroes. Charlie and I should know. We saw the proof. We visited the school on March 5, 2012. Pictures of superheroes adorn the walls inside and out. In one rendering, even the principal is depicted wearing a costume! The gym teacher, on the other hand, goes all out by wearing an actual Supergirl t-shirt while she leads class. The students also get into the heroic act. They're reading heroes, of course, and they write and draw...

School Visit: Black Elementary
On the afternoon of Friday March 2, 2012, Charlie and I visited a second school for the day. It was also our second stop at Black Elementary in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Right away, we were treated like honored guests. The students at Black had participated in a "penny war" to see which class could raise the most money for school. An awesome bunch of kindergarteners won, and we enjoyed a scrumptious pizza lunch with them. Afterward, we spent time with the 2nd and 3rd place winners in their ...
School Visit: Green Acres Elementary 2012
Friday March 2, 2012 was a special day for Charlie and me. No, not only because it marked Dr. Seuss' 108th birthday. (See my tribute to the late late legend here). The day was also special because we visited Green Acres Elementary in Warren, Michigan for the fourth–maybe fifth!–time. We've lost count. Media Specialist Jean Wenner and her students obviously love our program, and we enjoy visiting with them. How could we not? Any school that invites us to visit so often must be doing something ...

School Visit: Plumbrook Elementary 2012
Our second stop on March 1, 2012 was at Plumbook Elementary in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Good thing we arrived on time because our first assembly started 15 minutes earlier than we realized! Being the professionals that we are (ha!), Charlie and I set-up in record time. We met the unexpected start time easily and put on two lively presentations for the students. After that, we lugged in a stack of books for autographs and signed them in the library. Media Specialist Sarah Pacifico kept us c...
School Visit: Collins Elementary 2012
March 1st marks the beginning of Reading Month. To commemorate, Charlie and I visited Collins Elementary in the morning. Afternoon or morning, though, seems to make little difference to the students. Kids everywhere just enjoy the Real Heroes Read Knighting Ceremony. We're pictured above with two of Collins' reading heroes. Below, Charlie recounts a spooky story from his childhood. Ever wonder how he became a famous author? The story explains exactly how.
Thank you to Media Specialist Cyndee R...

School Visit: Wiley Elementary 2012
February 29th doesn't come around often, so Charlie and I made it memorable. After an icy start (the roads and weather), we arrived at Wiley Elementary in Sterling Heights, Michigan "only" an hour late. Fortunately the staff at Wiley was very accommodating and understanding. Thank you! They adjusted their schedules and made our visit work. They even left up fancy signs to welcome us.
Even better, the school assigned us our very own personal assistant. We called him "Gopher" because he would...

School Visit: Hemlock Schools
Today, February 27, 2012, Charlie and I visited two elementary schools in Hemlock, Michigan. First we met with the kindergartners and first graders at Hemlock Elementary. (Wonder where the school got its name?!) Can you guess the school's mascot? No, not Charlie! He's a visiting author. Look behind him on the walls. There's an athletic husky dog showing the kids how to have fun in gym class.
Meanwhile, Charlie showed the kids his juggling skills up close and personal. Think the husky can do...
