School Visit: Salem Elementary
Charlie and I finally visited Salem Elementary in Salem, Michigan on March 27, 2012. We were originally supposed to visit earlier in the month, but rescheduled due to illness. Let's just say that good things come to those who wait. It's an old saying but true today. Why? Just look at the t-shirt Reading Specialist Patricia Raines is wearing above. That's right, it says, "Real Heroes Read." Now where, oh where, have we heard that slogan before? Could it be in every book we autograph? Could it ...

School Visit: Beck Centennial Elementary
As far as Mondays go, today was unexpectedly good. Charlie and I visited Beck Centennial Elementary in Macomb, Michigan. We began by talking with the kindergartners in the library. Great kids and teachers! It's difficult to say who enjoyed our presentation more. There were smiles all around. After that 25 minutes of hard work (kidding!) we sat down for lunch with Media Specialist Cory Widener. Easy morning, right? Not that we're complaining. In the afternoon, we visited with two big groups...

School Visit: Flickenger Elementary
In the afternoon of March 22, 2012, Charlie and I visited with one of our favorite media specialists, Kathy Cothran. We like her so much, in fact, that we're friends on Facebook. You should be friends with us too! Here's a link to our fan page. Anyhoo, Mrs. Cothran now works at Flickenger Elementary in Utica, Michigan. She invited us to speak to her students in the library. What a cozy venue! What a group! Charlie and I had a blast. There were students seated on the floor, students perched...

School Visit: Beacon Tree Elementary
Charlie and I like Beacon Tree Elementary in Shelby Township, Michigan so much that we stretched our visit into two days–March 21 & 22, 2012. We just couldn't get enough of Media Specialist (shown above right) Gabriella Meyers' awesome library. The first day we visited with the upper grades, the second day with the lower. We even appeared on the school's morning newscast. Pretty impressive, I know. Special thanks to 1st grade teacher Mrs. Michele Greenwood (above left) for putting in a good w...

School Visit: Morgan Elementary
Today, March 21, 2012, was one of those days where Charlie and I didn't dare blink. Zoom! We visited Beacon Tree Elementary in the morning (we'll be back tomorrow and post a write-up later). Zoom! We cruised over to Morgan Elementary in Shelby Township, Michigan. Zoom! We scarfed a quick Jimmy John's lunch with Media Specialist and High Energy Guy Mike DeLorenzo. Zoom! We presented our Real Heroes Read! Book Talk to the K-2nd graders. Zoom! We signed 200 books in 40 mins. Zoom! We gave...

School Visit: West Michigan Academy
March 20, 2012 was quite a day and quite a drive. Charlie and I almost ended up in Illinois. Not a bad place to go, but we were aiming for West Michigan Academy of Arts and Academics in Spring Lake, Michigan. That's near Grand Haven on the west side of the Lower Peninsula. It's nowhere near Illinois! We took a wrong turn somewhere, most likely in Grand Rapids. Fortunately, our hostess, Language Arts instructor Marilyn Nieboer (pictured on the left above), was gracious and understanding. She e...

School Visit: Crissman Elementary
Friday March 16, 2012 wasn't quite St. Patrick's Day, but if felt like a holiday to Charlie and me. First of all, we visited Crissman Elementary in Shelby Township, Michigan and were greeted by a sea of green-garbed students. Not exactly leprechauns at the end of a rainbow but golden nonetheless. Secondly, the fifth graders had literally covered the school with welcome posters. Check them out below. I *hope* I managed to photograph them all. Seeing them made us feel as treasured as any pot...

School Visit: Schwarzkoff Elementary
Not every day that we visit two schools is stressful and rushed. March 14, 2012 was one of those stress free days. After a morning school stop, we visited Schwarzkoff Elementary in Sterling Heights, Michigan in the afternoon. In addition to performing twice for the students, Charlie and I had a little time to shoot some hoops. Check out the video below to see Charlie in action. Even authors can enjoy indoor recess. After our presentations, Media Specialist Corinne Peltier treated us to a...
School Visit: Harvey Elementary
Wednesday March 14, 2012 was a whirlwind day for Charlie and me. In the morning we visited Harvey Elementary in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Check out the awesome mural on the wall (pictured above). The opposite wall was also painted, this side with an undersea scene. The mural included dolphins, sea turtles, a variety of colorful fish and–to our surprise and delight–Sebastian from Disney's The Little Mermaid. The smiley crab was peeking from the bottom of the scene, waving with one claw...
School Visit: Shields Elementary
Tuesday March 13, 2012 was a nice day for Charlie and me. After a 3-day weekend, we visited Shields Elementary in Saginaw, Michigan the Tuesday after Daylight Savings Time began. We met with one group of students in the morning and a second in the afternoon. We also enjoyed a long lunch hour in between. No complaints here! Best of all, we had time to set up a table outside the main office and sign books personally for those who bought them. What a treat. We don't usually get that much...
