School Visit – Willow Woods – 1/14/11
Why is Charlie sitting all alone in the lobby of Willow Woods Elementary (Go, Wildcats!) in Sterling Heights? Because the school was a ghost town on our visit today. At least in the number of normal teachers there. Today the school was staffed by substitute teacher after substitute teacher. Why? Conferences and–yikes!–the dreaded flu. Even our hostess, media specialist Lisa Kennedy, was out sick for the day. Bummer! She and the other absent teachers missed a great afternoon. Lucky for us...
School Visit – Jefferson Elementary – 1/14/11
Anyone who claims that "kids don't read" is wrong. How do I know? The students at Jefferson Elementary. They have proven that statement false over and over this year. They read often and with enthusiasm. Let me explain.
Today Charlie and I visited their school in Sterling Heights, MI and discovered that media specialist Stephanie Staub cannot keep our Heroes A2Z books on her shelves. As soon as one student returns a book, another student checks it out. The book may not even have time to hit...

School Visit – Susick Elementary – 1/13/11
Hello again, Susick Elementary in Troy, MI. Charlie and I are proud to call our return to your school today a success. It's been a few years since our first visit, but our favorites haven't changed. We still like the sprawling, colorful Jungle Book mural on your library wall. And we absolutely love Mrs. Shepitka's stuffed dragon collection. So many varieties, shapes, sizes, and poses! The fire-breathing collection makes us feel at home. What a perfect complement to our Knightscares books:
My b...
School Visit – Hatherly Elementary – 1/13/11
Thank you Hatherly Elementary in Sterling Heights, MI. Charlie and I had a great time visiting your school this morning. Notice the big smile on Charlie's face. That's proof! Even Mrs. Rospino is smiling. She must have appreciated our visit, too. Happiness all around.
Of course the students also had a good time. We could tell by the noise they made when we asked them to cheer. The knighting ceremony (Hail, Sir! Hail, Lady!) has never been louder. Keep reading, kids. Book your adventure!

52 Favorites – One Fish Two Fish – David 2/52

In 1960, Dr. Seuss wrote the words One fish two fish red fish blue fish for the book of the same name. In 2009, Charlie and I wrote One bear, two bear. Bite bear, chew bear. in Heroes A²Z #8: Holiday Holdup. Coincidence? Not at all. Call it imitative flattery. Call it a tribute.
I grew up on Dr. Seuss. His wonderful, ridiculous stories brightened my childhood as much as they brightened the antique, polished pine bookcase in the otherwise formal family room in the house where I grew up...
52 Favorites – I Am Legend – Charlie 2/52
[image error]
I Am Legend was a book more than 50 years before it became a movie starring Will Smith. In fact, it was also a movie twice before that—1964's The Last Man On Earth (Vincent Price) and The Omega Man (Charlton Heston) in 1971. Sadly, none of the movies are accurate portrayals of the book. How many times must we repeat, "The book is always better than the movie" before Hollywood listens? The best of the three is The Omega Man, if you ask me, but I've always been a sucker for old Charlton...
