A Tribute to Zach Sobiech

A quote from someone you may have never heard of but who was truly wise: it shouldn’t take us dying to start living. –Zach Sobiech. You should spare 20 minutes of your day to watch this video about not a brave young man who suffered through cancer but a brave young man who refused to let the cancer keep him from living. Moving beyond words.

The Three Things You Need to Do Right Now With Your Online Store

Holiday online shopping is almost upon us? Will your e-store be just another one of the “nameless, faceless shopping carts”? Or can you do somethings right now that will help you connect better with your customers and provide a better digital shopping experience? I’ve come up with three things that any online store can do today, right now, that will help them deliver a much more engaging and thoughtful e-commerce experience.

Be “mobile ready”. Shopping has gone mobile. Your store needs to take...

How-To: Taking Underwater Photographs

NatGeo has posted a piece on tips for taking underwater photographs. My first one? Make sure the camera is really waterproof…

Some of their tips include:

Get comfortable underwater

Choose the right gear
Be familiar with the basic camera settings (see example below)
Use available light:Flash is not always the solution; it will yield amazing pictures, but keep in mind that it’s not the only option...

Mapping Out The Connection Between Our Real and Our Digital Selves

There is a growing, almost transparent connection forming between our online and real world personas. Before, these were clearly delineated. But with the advent of social media (an always on application) and smartphones that are always connected (whether via wifi or cellular) these personas (and our behavior) are becoming increasingly intertwined (or juxtaposed if you wish).

I’ve been writing a lot about this lately and it got me to thinking about visualizing it. So I put together a quick mind...

Exploring (Re)Memory

Memory (and the brain for that matter) are fascinating. I just came upon an old journal of mine (after cleaning out my office from yet, again, another failed startup) that had a pretty good analysis of the brain and its relationship to the body (i.e., the body is simply a device utilized by the brain to provide physical manifestation of otherwise intangible sensory perception).

What struck me though, in reading the journal, were some thoughts regarding memory and remembering (the former being...

Clouds by Zach Sobiech

This really a touching, moving song. Of course, especially after you watch his tribute video.

Here is the celebrity version:

And here is Zach’s version:

Quantum Creativity

In my last post about creativity, I explored the idea that creativity is an anti-process. It’s an irrational state that the mind enters, commandeeringprocesses and systems such as pattern recognition in a chaotic flurry of activity to create meaning. And as I began to think more about this concept (especially as it relates to the idea of teaching creativity) the more I gravitated to an idea of a quantum metaphor for the dichotomy of rational and creative.

The idea that the brain can exist simul...

Hands-On: Disney Makes it Easy to Tell Your Story

Although our digital tools (like smartphones and tablets) make it easy for us to capture moments in our lives with awesome integrated cameras and microphones, they don’t make it easy for us to make sense of them. In fact, one could argue that the very tools which make our lives easier also make parts of them complex (like organizing all that digital data we are creating when we snap pictures, write notes, and take video).

Sure, there are lots of services that have hit the digital airwaves to m...
