Field of Vision Computing Companies

I am going to put together a running list (with a little explanation) of the companies that are either embracing or enabling Field of Vision Computing. I will continually update this page as I come across more products and technologies.

First, what is Field of Vision Computing (FoVC)? I have defined it previously but, in short, it’s providing computational interfaces directly within our field of vision through which we interact via gesture, eye movement, or voice and enable a richer real-world...

The Number 1 Truth About Education

According to David Foster Wallace in his commencement speech to Kenyon College (2005), it’s the right to decide. All that time spent in school, and more importantly college, isn’t about amassing knowledge and divining meaning (well that’s a big part of it). It’s also about learning to think. To be aware. To “see the forest for the trees” (yes that means that the universe doesn’t revolve around us, it means looking ahead when you drive on the freeway but looking to the sides and behind you as...

Can We Really Be In Two Places At The Same Time?

According to the Tangible Media Lab at MIT, the answer is yes. Although I would argue that physical presence is still only in one place (unless we exist in a quantum field). The manifestation of physicality is mimicked in the demonstration of this tool. You can’t fool the speed of light. No matter what happens, there is going to be a delay which brings into question the use of this technology in anything life-threatening.

Autism: Do We Have It All Wrong?

I’ll be honest. I didn’t pay much attention to autistic kids until I was recently diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (or, more specifically, HFA which is high-functioning autism; used to be called Asperger’s).

Now I’m forced to look at it more closely. Like the autistic I am, it’s a puzzle to solve. I need to understand it. To disassemble it. But in doing so, a seedy underbelly is exposed: how we perceive autistics and their “disabilities.” I’m not disabled. In fact, quite the opposite. I...

Why Startups

Having spent the last 10 years or so of my life in a “startup” capacity (whether with jdpower.com, or with my consulting company, or most recently with GoWare.com), I have been forced into a position of self-reflection, especially with GoWare shutting its doors recently. In this position of self-reflection, I have reached a critical juncture: why do I do startups?

I am sure that some entrepreneurs would say that it’s for the thrill of it, for controlling your own destiny (and not answering to...

Is My Online Influence (Klout) Really Worth Anything?

Seth Stevenson wrote an interesting article for Wired’s Epicenter blog about Klout and what that online influence is beginning to mean in the real world (such as when getting a job). In an excerpt from the article,

Last spring Sam Fiorellawas recruited for a VP position at a large Toronto marketing agency. With 15 years of experience consulting for major brands like AOL, Ford, and Kraft, Fiorella felt confident in his qualifications. But midway through the interview, he was caught off guard wh...

Are You a Programmer? A Writer? A Creative? When Do You Work Best?

I’ve coded well into the wee hours of the night for multiple startups. And as a writer, I’ve done the same on big commissioned projects and my own creative endeavors. Night time not only provides me alone time but also when the world seems to slow down. Family is asleep. Less email. Less news. Less distraction from life. The world is asleep. Everything is quiet except my brain and my fingers on the keyboard.

When Religion Becomes a Game?

I have to say that I consider myself both intelligent and a learned person but I occasionally come across an idea, article, or story that simply stumps me. Below is a quote to one such story:

http://thenextweb.com/events/2011/08/...

Although this is an interview, the author broaches a concept called the “Ten Year Game” which involves teams and different religions and, well, who knows what else. If you can figure this out and tra...
